Quick answer: Open the NVIDIA App, enable NVIDIA Overlay in Settings, launch your game, press Alt+Z, and turn on Instant Replay. When something worth saving happens, press Alt+Shift+F10 to save the recent replay buffer. If your overlay shows a different shortcut, use the shortcut displayed there—NVIDIA hotkeys can be customized, and older ShadowPlay instructions may not match the current NVIDIA App.
What NVIDIA Instant Replay does
Instant Replay continuously keeps a temporary recording buffer of your recent gameplay. When you trigger the save command, NVIDIA preserves the configured portion of that buffer as a video file.

That makes it useful for saving an unexpected victory, funny glitch, impressive kill, or discovery without recording an entire session. The buffer is overwritten as new footage is captured, and footage from before Instant Replay was enabled cannot be recovered.

Before you begin
- Install or update the NVIDIA App.
- Make sure the NVIDIA Overlay is enabled.
- Launch the game after enabling the overlay.
- Keep sufficient free space on the drive used for captures.
- If capture options are missing, check your GPU, driver, game, display mode, and application support.
Older guides may refer to ShadowPlay, NVIDIA Share, or GeForce Experience. The use case is similar, but menus and shortcuts can differ from the current NVIDIA App.
How to turn on NVIDIA Instant Replay
- Open the NVIDIA App.
- Open Settings.
- Confirm that NVIDIA Overlay is enabled.
- Launch your game.
- Press Alt+Z to open the overlay. This is the default shortcut unless you changed it.
- Select Instant Replay and turn it on.
- Open the overlay’s Settings gear and enter the video-capture settings.
- Choose the replay length, quality, frame rate, codec, audio options, and storage location you want.
Once Instant Replay is active, return to the game. The rolling buffer will now contain only footage captured after activation.
How to save the last few minutes
Press Alt+Shift+F10 to save the recent Instant Replay segment. You can also click the Instant Replay save control inside the overlay.
The saved duration is determined by your Instant Replay length setting. If you enabled the feature only moments ago, the clip will naturally be shorter than the configured duration because the buffer has not filled yet.
Some older NVIDIA beta documentation used different commands, including Alt+F10. The current published NVIDIA App instructions identify Alt+Shift+F10 as the save shortcut, but the shortcut displayed in your own overlay is authoritative.
Change replay length, quality, audio, and storage
Replay length
Open Alt+Z → Settings → Video Capture, then find Instant Replay length. Choose a shorter duration when you want to limit storage use, or a longer duration for events that develop slowly. Do not assume that NVIDIA SHIELD’s documented 20-minute limit applies to the Windows NVIDIA App; those are separate platforms.

Resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and codec
Higher resolution, frame rate, and bitrate preserve more detail but create larger files and can increase storage and encoding demands. A practical starting point is to match capture quality to the game’s actual output rather than automatically selecting the highest available setting.
H.264 is usually the safer choice when broad playback and editing compatibility matters. AV1 can provide improved encoding efficiency and quality at comparable bitrates, particularly on supported GeForce RTX 40-series hardware with eighth-generation NVENC. Support depends on your GPU, driver, app version, and editing workflow, so AV1 is not guaranteed to produce a smaller file in every setup.
NVIDIA has published capture capability ceilings of up to 4K/120 FPS and 8K/60 FPS in the relevant NVIDIA App release context. Those figures are not guarantees that every GPU, display, game, or configuration can record at those settings.
Microphone and audio
Use the overlay’s audio settings to enable or disable microphone capture, select the input device, and configure push-to-talk where available. Multi-track audio can keep microphone audio separate from game audio for easier editing.
Check Windows microphone permissions and the selected input device if your voice is missing. Remember that voice chat may include other people’s voices; follow platform rules and applicable local law before publishing recordings.

Storage location and disk use
The overlay lets you change where captures are saved and limit the disk space used by recordings. A fast internal SSD with ample free space is generally preferable to a slow or nearly full drive. Longer buffers and higher-quality recordings require more storage, but actual file sizes depend on duration, codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate.

To find a saved clip, open Alt+Z → Gallery. After your first screenshot or video capture, Gallery organizes captures by game and provides an option to view the file or open its location on disk. Avoid relying on one universal default folder because the location can vary by configuration.
Record the desktop, browser, or another application
For tutorials, browsers, or other out-of-game content, open the capture settings and enable Desktop capture. You can then use Instant Replay or Record, depending on whether you want a rolling buffer or a continuous recording.
Desktop capture can include notifications, browser tabs, private messages, passwords, and other sensitive information. Disable it when you return to normal gameplay and review clips before sharing them.

| Instant Replay | Unexpected moments | Keeps a rolling buffer and saves it when triggered. |
| Record | Full matches, tutorials, and walkthroughs | Records continuously until stopped. |

Why NVIDIA Instant Replay is not working
Alt+Z does nothing
- Open the NVIDIA App directly.
- Go to Settings and confirm NVIDIA Overlay is enabled.
- Restart the NVIDIA App.
- Restart the game after enabling the overlay.
- Check whether Steam, Discord, Xbox Game Bar, an anti-cheat system, or another utility is claiming the shortcut.
- Try opening the overlay from the NVIDIA App interface.
- Update the NVIDIA App and graphics driver through official NVIDIA channels.
- Test another game or application in case the original uses protected content or an unsupported rendering configuration.
Instant Replay is missing
Possible causes include a disabled overlay, an incomplete app or driver installation, reading GeForce Experience instructions while using NVIDIA App, or capture restrictions in the current game or application. The exact cause depends on the GPU, driver, app version, game, and display mode.
The clip is black or incomplete
- Test another game or application.
- Enable Desktop capture if you are recording a desktop application rather than gameplay.
- Switch between exclusive fullscreen and borderless-windowed mode.
- Check the file in an HDR-compatible player if HDR was enabled.
- Temporarily disable competing overlays.
- Confirm the game is using the expected GPU and display.
- Check Gallery and the configured storage folder for another successfully saved file.
Laptop hybrid graphics, multiple monitors, protected video services, anti-cheat systems, HDR, and keyboard layouts can all affect behavior. Capture support is not universal across every game and configuration.

The shortcut conflicts with another program
Open the overlay settings and assign a different key combination. Then use the newly displayed shortcut rather than the default listed in an older guide.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The clip has no microphone audio
Check the microphone toggle, selected input device, push-to-talk configuration, Windows microphone permissions, and whether multi-track audio stored your voice on a separate track.
The clip will not save
Confirm that Instant Replay was enabled before the event, check the destination drive for free space, verify the storage location, and inspect Gallery. If the drive is full or the buffer had not been enabled, the missing footage cannot be reconstructed.
Alternatives to NVIDIA Instant Replay
OBS Studio is a better fit when you need scenes, webcam layouts, multiple sources, streaming controls, or detailed composition. Xbox Game Bar is another Windows capture option. Neither should be treated as an identical replacement without checking the specific system and workflow.
The Bottom Line
For the current NVIDIA App, enable NVIDIA Overlay, open it with Alt+Z, turn on Instant Replay, and save the recent buffer with Alt+Shift+F10. If that shortcut does not work, check the overlay’s displayed hotkey, capture settings, storage location, and whether the game or desktop configuration permits capture.
