What’s actually slowing this PC down?

unrar.dll is a native RAR-decompression library, not a protected Windows file, so the safest fix is usually repairing the application that needs it. When unrar.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, restore the matching copy from that application’s official installer instead of copying a random DLL into a Windows folder.
What this file actually does
RAR archives use a decompression engine to unpack their contents. unrar.dll provides that engine to another program through the Windows DLL-loading system. Archive managers, installers, game tools, backup utilities, file managers, and developer applications can all bundle their own copy.

RARLAB provides an official UnRAR dynamic library for Windows software developers. That does not make unrar.dll a WinRAR-only file, and installing WinRAR does not guarantee that another program will accept its copy. The application may require a particular build, export set, folder location, or license-compatible package.
It is also not normally a Windows component. You should not expect to find a trusted, system-managed copy in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Windows component repair tools generally do not recreate a private library installed by another application.

A 32-bit program commonly uses unrar.dll, while a 64-bit build may use unrar64.dll. The name is not an absolute rule, but it is a useful clue. A 64-bit version of Windows can run both 32-bit and 64-bit programs, yet their native DLLs remain different and are not interchangeable.
Some catalogued copies have appeared as 32-bit and 64-bit builds with different historical version numbers and sizes. Treat those listings as observations, not as a universal version requirement. The correct file is the one supplied for the program showing the error.
Causes by symptom
| What you see | Most likely cause | Best first fix |
|---|---|---|
| “The program can’t start because unrar.dll is missing” | Incomplete installation, deletion, or quarantine | Repair or reinstall the named application |
| “The code execution cannot proceed because unrar.dll was not found” | The DLL is absent from the application directory or expected search path | Verify files and restore the vendor copy |
| “The specified module could not be found” | Missing dependency, wrong architecture, or incorrect search path | Reinstall, check 32-bit versus 64-bit, and inspect the application |
| “%1 is not a valid Win32 application” | A 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch, or a corrupt binary | Install the architecture-matched package |
| “unrar.dll is either not designed to run on Windows” | Corruption, truncated download, wrong architecture, or invalid binary | Remove the damaged installation and reinstall it |

Fix 1: Identify the application that owns the DLL
Do not begin by searching the whole internet for unrar.dll. First identify the executable that is failing.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallRead the complete error window. It may appear when starting a game launcher, archive manager, installer, portable utility, or developer tool. Note the application name and whether the message names unrar.dll, unrar64.dll, or a subfolder such as systemunrar.
If the message appears during startup:
- Close the error.
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Startup apps and look for the program that launches at sign-in.
- Right-click a likely entry and choose Open file location.
- Record the full folder path and executable name.
For a desktop shortcut:
- Right-click the shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, read Target and Start in.
- Use that folder to identify the installation.
If only one application fails, that application owns the immediate dependency relationship. The filename alone cannot tell you which product installed it. Total Commander, OCAD, and unrelated software can use their own copies.
Fix 2: Repair or verify the affected program
This is the highest-probability solution because application-specific DLLs are normally restored by the application’s installer.
Use a launcher repair feature
For a game or launcher:
- Open the launcher.
- Select the affected game or application.
- Open its menu, gear icon, or Manage page.
- Choose Verify files, Repair, Scan and repair, or the equivalent.
- Wait for the scan to finish.
- Restart the launcher and start the program again.
The launcher should download or unpack the correct library into the location expected by the executable. If it reports that files were repaired, test the application before making any Windows-wide changes.
Use Windows installed-app repair
For a program registered with Windows:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or the program entry on Windows 10.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair and wait for it to finish.
- Start the program again.
If Repair is unavailable or does not help, choose Reset only after checking whether it removes settings or locally stored data. Resetting may rebuild the installation but can also discard application preferences.
Reinstall from the publisher
If verification and repair fail:
- Close the application and its launcher.
- Uninstall the program from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the application publisher’s official site or use the publisher’s official launcher.
- Install the same architecture required by the program.
- Start the application once before adding plug-ins or modifications.
Do not assume that installing WinRAR is the definitive fix. If the error belongs to a different application, reinstalling that application remains the correct way to restore its private dependency.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine a legitimate application file, but you should not blindly approve every detection.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry naming
unrar.dll,unrar64.dll, or the affected application. - Expand the entry and inspect the file path, detection name, and action taken.
Restore the file only when all of these are true:
- The path is inside the expected application folder.
- The application came from its legitimate publisher.
- The installer or file has a valid publisher signature where one is expected.
- You have confirmed that the detection is associated with the program you intended to install.
If you restore a trusted quarantined file, use Allow on device only after that verification. Then run the application’s repair or verify function so it can restore the exact packaged copy.
If the path is a temporary folder, a user-download folder, or an unfamiliar location, do not restore it. Remove the untrusted application and reinstall from the official source. A security warning is not proof that every unrar.dll is malicious, and it is also not proof that every detection is false.
Fix 4: Match the program’s architecture
A 32-bit application needs a 32-bit native library. A 64-bit application needs a 64-bit library. Installing the wrong one can produce a load failure even when the filename appears correct.
To check an installed application:
- Open Task Manager.
- Select the Details tab.
- Start the affected program if it stays open long enough.
- Look for its process name.
- On some Windows versions, a 32-bit process is marked with
*32; on others, right-click the column headings and enable an architecture column if available.
You can also inspect the application’s installer or publisher documentation. Do not infer architecture from Windows itself. A 64-bit Windows installation can run both types.
Use the architecture supplied by the application vendor. Do not rename unrar64.dll to unrar.dll, combine files from separate packages, or copy a DLL from another program. Native libraries can expose different functions and depend on different supporting files.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFix 5: Understand the “module could not be found” message
The message “specified module could not be found” is misleading. Windows may have found unrar.dll but failed to load one of its dependencies.
Common causes include:
- A missing dependency beside the application.
- A 32-bit library loaded by a 64-bit process, or the reverse.
- A damaged or truncated DLL.
- A program launched from the wrong working directory.
- A blocked or inaccessible application folder.
- An incompatible historical UnRAR interface.
Start with the application’s official repair or reinstall. Then confirm that the program executable and its intended private DLLs are in the same installation tree. Windows searches the application directory early in its DLL search order, which is why the vendor-supplied application copy is generally safer than a global copy.
If the problem affects only one Windows user profile, test the application from another administrator account. A profile-specific startup path, permissions issue, or per-user configuration may be redirecting the program. Do not add arbitrary folders to the global PATH unless the publisher specifically requires it.
If the message remains, record the full executable path and check Event Viewer:

Fix 6: Do not register the library with regsvr32
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by certain COM or ActiveX components. A decompression library is not automatically a self-registering component.
Running:
regsvr32 unrar.dll
will usually fail with an entry-point error, or it will target the wrong copy of the file. It cannot recreate a missing dependency, correct an architecture mismatch, or repair a damaged installation.
Use regsvr32 only when the application’s publisher explicitly identifies the DLL as a self-registering component and gives you the exact command and path. That is not the normal remedy for unrar.dll.
Fix 7: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
SFC and DISM are useful when multiple protected Windows files or Windows features are failing. They are not the normal way to restore an application-private unrar.dll.
If other Windows programs are also malfunctioning:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application again.
Microsoft documents the DISM-then-SFC order for repairing the Windows image and protected system files. Success means DISM completes without reporting an unrepaired image problem and SFC reports that it repaired or found no integrity violations. Neither command will normally recreate a vendor’s private unrar.dll, so reinstall the affected application if the error remains.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed is time-consuming when the actual problem is an incomplete application install. Outbyte PC Repair can provide a scan that shows what it finds, while repair actions require the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the program that owns unrar.dll remains the definitive fix.
Fix 8: Do not use driver or runtime repairs as the first answer
unrar.dll is not a device driver, a .NET assembly, or a normal Visual C++ project reference. Updating a graphics, chipset, or storage driver will not usually restore it. Device Manager is relevant only if the application also reports a separate hardware or device error.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

If a device problem is independently present:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant hardware category.
- Right-click the device.
- Choose Update driver or Uninstall device only when following the hardware manufacturer’s instructions.
- Restart Windows and test the hardware.
Do not use Device Manager to hunt for unrar.dll. Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers it identifies as outdated, while the actual driver installation requires the full version; it is optional and does not replace repairing the application that needs unrar.dll.
Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, and .NET repairs are similarly secondary. Install or repair them only when the application publisher lists them as requirements or the error names a related runtime. They do not generally contain unrar.dll.
Fix 9: Avoid system-folder copying
Do not download unrar.dll from a random DLL website, copy it from another PC, or place it in System32 or SysWOW64.
That approach can introduce malware, provide the wrong architecture, fail to include dependent files, create version conflicts, and leave the application still searching in its own directory. It can also make future repairs harder by hiding which copy is actually being loaded.
Use the affected application’s official installer or launcher first. If the software intentionally uses RARLAB’s UnRAR developer library, obtain the matching package from RARLAB’s official distribution or from the application vendor. Keep the library in the location specified by that software.
When to contact the publisher
Escalate when:
- Repair and reinstall do not restore the file.
- The program requires a historical UnRAR API.
- Antivirus repeatedly removes a verified vendor copy.
- The error names a dependency rather than
unrar.dllitself. - The program is portable or uses a custom folder structure.
- The application fails only under one user profile.
- The publisher supplied a signed package that Windows still rejects.
Include the exact error text, application name, full executable path, Windows version, process architecture, antivirus action, and Event Viewer details. The software publisher owns the dependency relationship, not Windows.
Frequently asked questions
Is unrar.dll part of Windows?
No. It is a third-party native library associated with RAR decompression and is normally distributed with an application.
Should I install WinRAR?
Not automatically. WinRAR and RARLAB provide official UnRAR components, but another application may require its own packaged build. Repair the program named in the error first.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why is the 64-bit file called unrar64.dll?
Some vendors use unrar64.dll to distinguish a 64-bit build from the 32-bit unrar.dll. The naming convention varies, but the process architecture must still match the library.
Can I copy the file into System32?
No. Use the application’s installer and its expected directory. A global copy can be ignored or create conflicts.
Why does SFC say everything is fine?
Because SFC checks protected Windows files, while unrar.dll normally belongs to a third-party application. Reinstall the owning program.
What if the file exists but still will not load?
Check architecture, dependencies, permissions, the application’s working directory, antivirus blocking, and compatibility. “Module not found” does not always mean the named DLL is absent.
