In November 2024, GameSpot reported Epic’s position on those specific archived copies as “free to independently link to and play these versions.” That is not an Epic Store relaunch or a blanket statement about every Unreal game or copy.
Which Unreal games are free through the archive?
The 2024 story concerns two separate PC games: Unreal, released on May 22, 1998, and Unreal Tournament, released on November 30, 1999. Epic’s franchise pages describe the original Unreal as a story-driven, exploration-focused single-player game, while Unreal Tournament offers single-player and multiplayer modes including Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Assault, and Domination. These are not Unreal Tournament 2003, 2004, or 3. Epic’s franchise page gives the release dates and game descriptions.

Game Developer reported that access was provided through archived disc images, with OldUnreal installers available to retrieve and install those files. So “free” describes the archive/community-supported route; it does not mean Epic put the games back on its own store. Game Developer’s report explains the download options.
What did Epic say about the Internet Archive copies?
GameSpot reported on November 14, 2024 that Epic, in a statement to Polygon, said people were “free to independently link to and play these versions.” The wording is specific to the versions being discussed. It should not be read as a universal license to redistribute other Unreal titles, files, or editions. GameSpot’s report carries the statement and context.

How to install Unreal Gold or UT99
OldUnreal’s installation pages offer an installer route that retrieves the original disc image, installs the game, and automatically applies the latest OldUnreal version. The pages list different Windows minimums: Windows 7 or later for Unreal Gold, and Windows XP or later for Unreal Tournament Game of the Year Edition. OldUnreal provides separate instructions for Linux and macOS. Check the relevant page for the current installer and platform steps, since those details can change.

Offline play and official online services are different matters. Epic’s December 14, 2022 notice said it would shut down online services for older games and remove certain titles from digital storefronts; it also said players who already owned removed games could still play them. The notice included Unreal Gold, Unreal Tournament 2003, Unreal Tournament 2004, Unreal Tournament 3, and Unreal Tournament: Game of the Year Edition. Epic summarized the offline impact this way: “Most titles will be playable offline, while some will no longer be playable.” Read Epic’s shutdown notice.
In its November 2024 coverage, GameSpot reported that community servers were keeping the shooters alive, while official dedicated servers were no longer available. Epic’s franchise page likewise says servers for some versions of UT remain active through community patches and maintenance. Community availability can change, so neither statement guarantees that a particular server is online now or that every version has multiplayer support.

What changed after the 2024 free-download story?
In a separate later development, PC Gamer reported on February 15, 2026 that Unreal Tournament 2004 had also become available through an OldUnreal installer and community patch. That is a different game and a later community-supported release; it does not change which two games the 2024 headline referred to. PC Gamer’s UT2004 report covers that update.
