Unreal Engine 6 is a planned convergence of UE5 and Unreal Editor for Fortnite, not a released preview with a finished distributed-physics engine. Epic’s 2026 roadmap points to Scene Graph physics proposals and a separate vision for spreading Verse game execution across servers. Those ideas are at different stages—and neither should be confused with UE5.8’s modular Control Rig Physics.
What is Unreal Engine 6?
Epic describes UE6 as Unreal Engine 5 and Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) coming together in one engine. The June 2026 announcement frames the transition around a Verse-based gameplay model, greater portability and interoperability for content, code, and economies, and development-pipeline tools that include a Model Context Protocol (MCP) foundation. Epic says those capabilities will roll out incrementally in UEFN and UE6; the announcement is a roadmap, not a list of features already available in a UE6 release. Epic’s UE6 roadmap
Scene Graph is the new gameplay framework described in that plan. It is built on Verse, whose functions Epic describes as atomic transactions that can be rolled back and resimulated. Epic says the current design runs Verse on a single thread and calls C++ compiled with a custom LLVM compiler that transactionalizes the code. Running transactions concurrently across threads is a possible extension, but Epic says more work is needed.
When is UE6 coming out?
Epic targeted UE6 Early Access for the end of 2027 in its June 2026 announcements. Its roadmap says the full release is expected 12–18 months after Early Access. Both dates are targets stated by Epic in 2026, not firm release commitments. State of Unreal 2026 recap · UE6 roadmap

The public UE6 development stream is not an alpha or a supported release promise. Epic says it is intended to show development transparently and that work shown there can be cherry-picked. As Marcus Wassmer, who leads Epic’s development team, put it: “this stream is not meant to be any kind of Alpha: it exists just to be transparent with where we’re going.”
What does “distributed physics” mean in the UE6 roadmap?
Epic’s UE6 announcement describes distributed transactional game execution and state across servers—not a released, general-purpose physics solver that automatically distributes arbitrary simulations. The distinction matters: distributing a game’s program work is not the same as distributing the calculations and networking guarantees of a physics system.

In Epic’s proposed model, existing single-threaded-style Verse game code could be spread across multiple servers. If a transaction needs an object held on another server, the runtime would roll back the transaction, migrate the object, and run the transaction again. Epic characterizes prototype results as promising, but this is a development direction rather than a shipped capability or a guarantee about physics workloads. Epic’s explanation of the transactional model
Epic also says transactional execution could simplify persistence by synchronizing and saving global program state. UEFN’s weak_map persistence is presented as an early step toward that direction; the announcement does not establish the final scope or production behavior of a general-purpose system.

Will Unreal Engine 6 have modular physics?
“Modular physics” refers to more than one thing in Epic’s materials. UE5.8’s Control Rig Physics is a named release feature for modular physics rigs and animation layering. Separately, Scene Graph roadmap posts describe interfaces for rigid-body behavior and a proposal for multi-part simulation. The posts have “None” in their status field, so they should be read as roadmap proposals, not confirmed UE6 features available to use.
| Feature or proposal | What it is for | Availability or maturity stated by Epic |
|---|---|---|
| UE5.8 Control Rig Physics | Modular physics rigs that can work with a developer’s own rigs, layer over animation, and have influence keyframed over time. | Moved to Beta in UE5.8; Epic cautions that Beta and Experimental features should not be considered production-ready. |
| UE5.8 Control Rig Dynamics | A particle-based solver for runtime secondary motion with an accuracy/performance trade-off. | Introduced in UE5.8; Epic describes it as five times the speed of the original solver. This is Epic’s characterization, not a UE6 distributed-physics benchmark. |
| Scene Graph single-body rigid simulation | Physics interfaces for a Scene Graph mesh_part, including collision and force-related operations. |
Roadmap forum post titled “Experimental”; its status field reads “None.” |
| Scene Graph multi-body simulation | Several independently simulated mesh parts behaving as one physically interactive object. | Roadmap forum post; its status field reads “None.” |
| UE6 distributed execution vision | Transactional Verse game execution and object state distributed across servers. | Development direction in Epic’s UE6 roadmap, not a released general-purpose distributed physics solver. |
Epic’s UE5.8 release announcement separately labels Dataflow and Chaos Cloth Production-Ready. Dataflow supports procedural creation and iteration of physics-based assets, with Chaos Destruction as an example; Chaos Cloth uses a Dataflow-based cloth-authoring panel. Those labels apply to those named features, not to every physics capability in UE5.8. UE5.8 release details and maturity labels

What do the Scene Graph physics proposals cover?
Single-body rigid simulation
Thomas Convard’s September 4, 2026 Epic Developer Community post describes physics interfaces through a Scene Graph mesh_part. The proposed scope includes line traces, overlap and collision callbacks, physics materials, forces, impulses, and replication needs. It names has_collisions and has_dynamics interfaces and describes an initialization workflow. Although “Experimental” appears in the post’s title, its status field is “None,” so the careful description is a proposal, not a confirmed experimental release feature. Single Body Rigid Simulation – Experimental
The post does not settle whether has_dynamics will be server-authoritative, run at a particular tick rate, or support client simulation or prediction. A commenter asks about those networking behaviors, but the post excerpt supplies no answer; no authority model, frequency, or prediction guarantee can be inferred from it.

Multi-body simulation
A separate post by Convard, also dated September 4, describes one mesh_component carrying multiple independently simulated mesh parts that collide and react as a single physically interactive object. The proposal mentions per-part collision, materials, and physics behavior; skeletal-mesh backing with bone and socket interactions; deterministic update ordering into animation; and Verse APIs for managing dynamic versus kinematic states. Its status field also reads “None.” This is distinct from UE5.8’s modular Control Rig Physics and from the cross-server execution vision. Multi-body simulation
How should UE5 developers think about the transition?
Epic says existing UE5 projects should have a manageable path forward. Actors and Blueprints are expected in early UE6 versions, then are expected to be deprecated when the new framework is mature; Epic says conversion tools are planned. The stated approach is to bring existing projects along rather than force a hard break. These are roadmap intentions, not a guarantee that every project or plugin will convert without changes. Epic’s migration and framework plans
Epic’s State of Unreal 2026 recap called UE5.8 the last planned major UE5 release, while leaving open the possibility of a 5.9 release if needed. That makes “UE5.8 is definitively the final UE5 version” too strong. State of Unreal 2026 recap
What else is part of the UE6 roadmap?
Content portability
Epic says glTF and USD will become first-class formats where they meet UE6’s needs. Where existing standards are insufficient for game ecosystems, Epic intends to publish open specifications, Verse APIs, asset conventions, and documentation. The announced Fortnite cosmetics proof point is a plan: an open module intended to let entitled Fortnite outfits be used in other games and to let outfits created for other games work inside Fortnite. It is not a statement that universal cross-game interoperability is already available. UE6 portability plans
Model-assisted development
UE6’s roadmap includes MCP integrations and model-assisted development workflows. That plan is separate from the UE5.8 Experimental MCP plugin, which Epic describes as connecting models to UE projects and exposing engine systems. An experimental plugin in UE5.8 does not establish the availability or final form of UE6’s planned tools. UE5.8 MCP plugin details
