Its central hook is a night that resets after the characters die, with new dangers emerging each time. Critics are divided on whether those variations keep the premise inventive or make it wear thin.
What is the Until Dawn movie about?
Clover and her friends go looking for Clover’s missing sister, Melanie, in a remote valley. A masked killer begins hunting them. When they are killed, they wake at the start of the same evening; the threats change with each cycle, and the group discovers they have only a limited number of deaths. Sony’s official synopsis lays out that repeating-night setup.

The movie is Sony’s 2025 release. The “2024” in the supplied title is associated with the game: Metacritic lists the game’s initial release date as October 4, 2024. That date is for the game, not the film.
Is Until Dawn any good?
The available critical response is mixed. Rotten Tomatoes’ critic consensus finds the repeated-clock premise novel but says the later variations lack enough inspiration, leading to diminishing returns. The main question is whether each reset escalates suspense with a fresh, coherent threat—or whether repetition blunts the original hook.

Metacritic’s film page showed a Metascore of 54 from 23 critic reviews when accessed October 8, 2026. That is a dated snapshot of a changing aggregator score, not a permanent rating or a measure of audience opinion. See the Metacritic page for its current listing.
How different is the movie from the game?
The film draws on the game’s survival-horror ideas but tells a different story with a new group of characters. Its repeat-night structure translates the game’s sense of death and consequence into a cinematic cycle; it does not simply reproduce the game’s plot. The useful adaptation question is whether the film captures the source’s spirit while making that mechanic work as a standalone story.

Director and producer David F. Sandberg described the intent in a PlayStation Blog trailer announcement: “the whole thing is a love letter to horror, and it completely honors the spirit of the game.” That is Sandberg’s view of the adaptation, rather than an independent critical verdict. The announcement was published January 16, 2025.
Who should watch it?
- Consider it if you enjoy horror built around a repeating-night premise and want to see how a game-inspired survival mechanic can become a film story.
- Temper expectations if you need each turn in a horror concept to feel increasingly inventive; the critics’ key reservation is that the variations lose momentum.
- You do not need to know the game’s plot to understand the film’s premise, which follows different characters and events.
