Start with the two remedies documented for this error: remove the affected map’s lighting.dat file, then repair Unturned’s Steam installation. The first step is aimed particularly at the related “could not divide by zero” failure; the second replaces damaged or outdated game files. Because the documented server path is specific to one hosting layout, back up the file and adapt the location if your server is self-hosted or uses another panel.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Unturned servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
What the message means—and what it does not prove
“Unable to connect to a running service” is a connection failure reported while Unturned is trying to reach a service that should already be running. In a server setup, that service may be the game server process, a supporting process, or the local installation that launches the connection. The available troubleshooting guidance does not establish one universal root cause, and it is not official confirmation from Unturned or Steam that every instance has the same fault.

Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11The directly documented fix targets a map-lighting file and the Steam installation. That matters because deleting a map file is not a general-purpose network repair: the source specifically connects it with the game’s “could not divide by zero” error. If your log contains a different failure, treat the lighting-file step as a targeted test rather than a guaranteed cure.
Before you change anything
- Stop the Unturned server or close the game and Steam before editing files. A running process can recreate, lock or overwrite a file while you are working.
- Record the exact map name and the full error text. Keep any server-console or crash-log lines that appear immediately before the connection message.
- Make a backup copy of
lighting.datinstead of permanently discarding it. Store the copy outside the active map directory so you can restore it if necessary. - Confirm whether you are changing a hosted server’s files or the game installation on your own computer. These are separate locations; repairing the client does not automatically repair a remote server.
Step 1: Remove the map’s lighting.dat
The provider’s documented first step is to delete the lighting file for the map that is failing. It says this resolves the “could not divide by zero” error, which can prevent the game or server from starting correctly and leave connection attempts unable to reach a running service.

Using the documented hosting path
- Open the file manager for the server.
- Browse to
/servers/pingperfect/level/[name of the map you're running]. Replace the bracketed portion with the actual map-directory name; the brackets are a variable, not literal characters. - Check that you are inside the map selected by the server. Do not remove a file from an unrelated map directory.
- Locate
lighting.datand delete it, or move it to the backup location you created. - Start the server again and try the same connection. Watch the console for a new error rather than relying only on the client’s generic message.
This path begins with /servers/pingperfect/ and is therefore provider-specific. A different host, control panel or self-hosted installation can place map data elsewhere. Search that environment for the active map directory and the file named exactly lighting.dat; do not assume the documented path exists on every system.
If the file is missing
Do not create an empty replacement just to satisfy the filename. A missing file can mean that the map uses a different layout, that the server has already regenerated or removed it, or that the failure is unrelated to lighting data. Proceed to the Steam repair step and preserve the error details for escalation.
If deleting it changes the symptom
A change from “unable to connect” to a different startup error is useful evidence. It indicates that the map’s files were involved, but it does not identify every remaining problem. Restore the backup only if the server requires the original file and the new state is worse; otherwise keep the regenerated or repaired state and continue troubleshooting the new message.

Step 2: Repair the Steam installation
The second documented remedy is to run Steam’s update/file-repair check for Unturned. The purpose is to scan the installation for damaged or outdated files and redownload replacements when Steam finds a problem. This repairs client files that may have become corrupted; it does not rewrite arbitrary files on a remote game server.
Recommended Steam workflow
- Close Unturned completely. If it remains in Task Manager or another process list, end it before continuing.
- Open Steam and allow any pending Steam client update to finish.
- Open your Library, select Unturned, open its Properties, and choose the installed-files option. Steam’s wording can change between client versions; use the command labeled Verify integrity of game files or the equivalent repair/verification command.
- Wait for the scan to finish. Do not launch the game while Steam is still checking or redownloading files.
- Restart Steam after the repair completes, launch Unturned, and test the same server or map again.
Steam may report that all files were successfully validated, or it may download replacements. Either result is useful: a clean validation makes damaged client files less likely, while a redownload confirms that the installation had files Steam considered outdated or damaged.
Client repair versus server repair
If you are joining someone else’s server, Steam verification repairs only your local Unturned installation. The server operator must apply the map-file step or repair the server installation. If you operate the server yourself, perform the client verification on the computer that connects and separately inspect the server’s active map directory.

Test in a controlled order
Changing several things at once makes the result difficult to interpret. Use this sequence:
- Capture the original error and any accompanying “could not divide by zero” text.
- Stop the affected process and back up the map file.
- Remove the active map’s
lighting.datand restart the server. - Attempt one connection using the same map and account.
- If the failure remains, run Steam’s file verification/update process.
- Restart Steam and Unturned, then repeat the connection test.
If the message changes after one step, record the new wording and the time of the test. That information is more useful to support than repeatedly deleting files or reinstalling without a record.
When the two steps do not work
Check that you changed the active map
A server can contain several map directories. Removing lighting.dat from an inactive map will not affect the map selected in the server configuration. Confirm the exact map name in the startup settings or control panel, then check that directory again.

Separate connection symptoms from startup symptoms
Ask whether the server actually reaches a running state. If the console stops during map loading, the client’s connection message may only be a consequence of that startup failure. If the server reaches a ready state but clients still cannot join, preserve the startup log and investigate the connection side separately rather than repeatedly modifying map files.
Look for a new, specific error
After file removal or Steam repair, the original generic message may be replaced by a more actionable one. Use that exact text when opening a ticket. Do not claim that the two documented steps repair authentication, firewall, port-forwarding or unrelated service failures; the available guidance does not establish those causes.
Escalate with a complete report
The documented instruction when the error remains is to open a support ticket for further investigation. Include:

Self-hosting and managed hosting: what changes
The two-step guidance comes from a hosting provider’s support article, which also offers managed Unturned hosting. Managed hosting is an optional infrastructure choice, not proof that a local installation error has been fixed. The practical difference is who can access and maintain the files.
| Consideration | Self-hosted server | Managed server |
|---|---|---|
| File and configuration control | You control the machine, directories and configuration. | The provider supplies the control panel and server environment; access depends on its tools and policies. |
| Updates and troubleshooting | You are responsible for Steam/server updates, backups and diagnosis. | The provider can investigate server-side issues through its support process, while you still need to describe the map and client symptoms accurately. |
| Support availability | Depends on your own resources or the software community. | The cited provider instructs customers to open a support ticket when the two steps do not resolve the problem. |
| Recurring cost and performance | Depends on your hardware, connection and operating costs. | The cited guidance does not state comparative pricing, uptime or performance, so those factors must be checked for the specific plan before switching. |
Choose managed hosting for operational support or convenience, not as a blanket workaround for every “unable to connect” message. If the same client files or map data are copied to the new environment, the underlying problem can follow you.
How strong is the “two steps” claim?
The provider says it resolves issues with these two steps “95% of the time.” That figure is a provider claim; the page does not give a publication year, sample size or independent measurement. Use it as an indication of the provider’s recommended order, not as a guarantee that your case will be fixed.
The evidence is strongest for cases involving the map-lighting failure and damaged or outdated Steam files. It does not demonstrate that every network, authentication, firewall or service-process problem has the same cause. When your logs show another failure, escalate that evidence instead of forcing the two-step explanation.
Quick Recap
Quick checklist
- Did you stop the game or server before editing?
- Did you back up the active map’s
lighting.dat? - Did you use the actual active-map directory rather than a similarly named map?
- Did you remember that
/servers/pingperfect/level/is a provider-specific path? - Did Steam finish its update and file-verification process?
- Did you test again with the same map and record the new result?
- If it still fails, did you send support the path, map name, verification result and complete error log?
