1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors“The program can’t start because unzdll.dll is missing from your computer.” If Windows reports that unzdll.dll was not found, the problem is usually inside the older application that needs it, not inside Windows itself.
Which fix applies to you
Start with the situation that best matches what happened:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- One older program or game stopped launching: repair or reinstall that program from its original installer.
- The error started after antivirus detected a file: check Windows Security protection history before reinstalling anything.
- The application was moved, restored, or copied to another drive: reinstall it to its original location or use its repair option.
- The program starts but reports “The specified module could not be found”: unzdll.dll may exist, but another dependency may be missing.
- Several unrelated applications show DLL errors: investigate Windows, disk, malware, or profile corruption rather than replacing unzdll.dll.
- The program is old and runs on 64-bit Windows: confirm that the application is 32-bit and that its matching DLL is beside its executable.
- The error appeared immediately after an update or installation: try the application’s rollback, repair, or System Restore before downloading any replacement file.
Do not begin by copying a downloaded DLL into System32. That approach often installs the wrong build and leaves the actual application problem unresolved.

What unzdll.dll is
unzdll.dll is a legacy third-party application DLL associated with BCB/Delphi UnZip. Its internal description is commonly Win32 DLL, UNZIP. It is associated with Delphi and C++Builder software that uses an Info-ZIP-based unzip component.

Older programs may keep a private copy in their own installation directory. Examples of software documented as distributing or using this type of library include older editors, utilities, card-file software, testing tools, and other Delphi-built applications. The exact parent program must be identified on the affected computer.
Public file listings also show conflicting builds and version information. That means there is no safe universal “latest” copy to download. The correct file is the one supplied with the affected application.
The classic file is identified as a 32-bit PE32/x86 DLL. A 64-bit version of Windows can run a 32-bit application, so seeing 64-bit Windows does not mean you need a 64-bit unzdll.dll.
Typical unzdll.dll messages
The exact wording depends on the application and Windows version. Common messages include:
- “The program can’t start because unzdll.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “This application failed to start because unzdll.dll was not found.”
- “The file unzdll.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “Error loading unzdll.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because unzdll.dll was not found.”
- “unzdll.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named file is absent. Windows may have found unzdll.dll but failed to load a dependency required by that DLL.
Fix 1: Identify the program requesting the file
The executable path is more useful than the DLL filename. Find it before changing anything.

- On the Shortcut tab, inspect Target.
- Note the folder containing the executable.
- Check Start in as well.
- Open the target folder in File Explorer.
- Search that folder and its subfolders for
unzdll.dll.
If the shortcut points to an old external drive, network location, temporary folder, or deleted directory, the program may have been moved or only partially restored.
From Task Manager
If the program opens briefly:
- Start the application.
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Details.
- Right-click the program process.
- Choose Open file location.
If the process closes too quickly, use the shortcut target or search for the application’s .exe file in File Explorer.
From Event Viewer
For a crash rather than a clear missing-file dialog:
- Right-click Start and select Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look for an error at the time of the failure.
- Read the Faulting application name and Faulting module name.
- Record the full executable path if it is shown.
Do not assume that the faulting module is the correct replacement target. A crash entry can identify a dependent component rather than the original cause.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the affected application
This is the safest and most likely fix because unzdll.dll belongs to the application rather than Windows.
Use Windows application repair
For a program that supports Windows repair:
- Press
Windows+Ito open Settings. - Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair, if available.
- Start the application again.
The repair option may restore missing private files without removing the program’s settings.
If the error remains, return to the same screen and use Reset only if you understand that it may remove application data or preferences. For older desktop programs, Reset may not be available.

Use the application’s own maintenance program
Some older applications include a separate entry in Control Panel:
- Press
Windows+R. - Type:
appwiz.cpl
- Press Enter.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Modify, if offered.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
Reinstall from a trusted installer
If repair is unavailable:
- Save any documents or settings belonging to the application.
- Uninstall the application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps, or from Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original installer or the publisher-provided installer.
- Install the application to its normal location.
- Launch it before restoring custom settings or copied files.
If the application came from a game launcher or software manager, use that service’s Verify, Repair, or Scan and repair command instead of manually replacing the DLL. A successful verification should restore the application’s matching files. Test the program immediately afterward.
If reinstalling does not restore unzdll.dll, confirm that you are using the installer for the correct product and edition. A similarly named program may use a different build.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine an old DLL, particularly when the file is packed, unsigned, uncommon, or modified by an installer.
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections from the time the application stopped working.
- Expand a detection related to the application.
- Check the original file path and detection name.
Only restore or allow the file if all of these are true:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- The path belongs to the genuine application.
- The application was installed from a trusted original or publisher-provided installer.
- The file has not been manually downloaded or copied from an unknown source.
- The detection appears consistent with a false positive rather than a suspicious modification.
If the file is suspicious, leave it quarantined. Uninstall and reinstall the application from a trusted installer instead. If Windows Security repeatedly removes the same file, submit the original installer or file to the security vendor for analysis rather than permanently disabling protection.
After restoring a verified file, start the application. If it is immediately quarantined again, the file may be modified, damaged, or genuinely unsafe.
Fix 4: Confirm the DLL is in the application folder
A private application DLL is normally loaded from the folder containing the application executable. Microsoft documents the Windows DLL search order, which is why placing the correct file beside the requesting program is generally more appropriate than placing it in a system directory.
Check the application directory for:
unzdll.dll
If a trusted copy was quarantined, restoring it through Windows Security is preferable to copying a replacement manually.
Do not copy a public DLL-index download into either System32 or SysWOW64. The file may have the wrong version, wrong architecture, missing dependencies, or altered contents. System-wide placement can also cause another application to load an incompatible file.
If the program was copied from another computer, migrated from an older Windows installation, or moved between drives, reinstall it instead. Copying only the executable and a DLL rarely reproduces all of the application’s required files, registry settings, configuration, and dependencies.
Fix 5: Check 32-bit and dependency problems
The classic unzdll.dll is documented as a 32-bit x86 DLL. It may be loaded by a 32-bit application on either 32-bit or 64-bit Windows.
To check the application architecture, inspect its documentation or installation folder. You can also ask the application publisher, because Windows does not always display a simple architecture label for older programs.

If the error says the specified module could not be found even though unzdll.dll is present, look for a second missing dependency. Read the complete error dialog and check whether it names another file, such as a Microsoft runtime component. Install a Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable only when the application specifically reports missing files such as MSVCP*.dll or VCRUNTIME*.dll. Installing a runtime at random will not recreate unzdll.dll.
Check Windows optional features only when the application requires one
Some older software depends on a Windows component, but unzdll.dll itself is not a Windows feature.
If the application documentation specifically requires an optional component:
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Optional features.
- Select View features.
- Search for the named feature.
- Select it and choose Next.
- Select Add.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
Do not enable optional features simply because unzdll.dll is missing.
Fix 6: Update or reinstall a related driver only when evidence points there
A driver is not the normal source of an application-private unzdll.dll. Consider a driver only if the application also reports hardware initialization failures, display problems, audio errors, or another device-specific message.
To inspect drivers:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the failing function, such as Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, or Imaging devices.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Read the Device status message on the General tab.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
- Use Update Driver, or obtain the driver from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Do not remove a working driver merely because unzdll.dll is missing. If the driver update does not address a separate device error, return to repairing the application.
Manually hunting through driver versions can be time-consuming, especially when several devices show stale or mismatched drivers. Outbyte Driver Updater offers a free scan that identifies driver issues, while driver installation and repair require the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix for an application-owned DLL.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Fix 7: Run DISM and SFC only for broader Windows damage
DISM and System File Checker repair protected Windows components. They do not normally recreate a third-party unzdll.dll. Use them when Windows itself is also malfunctioning, such as when Settings, Windows Update, built-in tools, or several unrelated programs are damaged.
Run DISM first
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for the command to finish.
- Restart Windows if requested.
Run System File Checker
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then interpret the result:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected Windows files were not the issue.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test the application.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: repeat the DISM command, restart, and run SFC again. If the application alone still fails, repair or reinstall the application.
Microsoft’s guidance places DISM before SFC because DISM can repair the component store that SFC uses.
Repeating SFC and DISM cannot supply an application-specific DLL. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan that shows detected system issues, while repair requires the full version; it is optional and does not replace reinstalling the program that owns unzdll.dll.
Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore can help when the failure began immediately after installing software, applying an update, changing drivers, or removing a program.
- Press
Windows+R. - Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the failure.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not replace personal documents, and it may not remove the underlying application problem. If the error remains, reinstall the affected application from its trusted installer.

Do not use regsvr32 as a generic missing-DLL repair command.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly associated with certain COM or ActiveX components. unzdll.dll is described as an unzip helper library, not as an established registerable COM component.

Only use regsvr32 when the application’s official documentation explicitly instructs you to register a particular DLL and identifies the correct file and command.
Avoid random DLL downloads
Downloading unzdll.dll from an arbitrary DLL website is risky because:
- The file may contain malware or an intentional modification.
- Public listings show conflicting builds.
- The download may be the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- It may not match the application’s expected version.
- Required dependencies may still be missing.
- Replacing one file can hide a damaged installation.
- Copying it into a system folder can create conflicts for other programs.
There is no verified universal Microsoft redistributable for unzdll.dll. Use the affected application’s original installer, official publisher distribution, or a trusted launcher’s verification function.

Collect these details before contacting the application publisher:
- The full error text.
- The application name and version.
- The executable path shown in the shortcut target.
- Whether
unzdll.dllexists in the application folder. - Whether Windows Security quarantined it.
- Whether the application is 32-bit.
- Whether another dependency is named.
- Whether the failure affects one Windows user or every user.
- Whether other applications and Windows components also show errors.
If only one application fails after reinstalling, the remaining causes are usually an incompatible build, a missing application dependency, a damaged installer, or an application that cannot run correctly on the current Windows configuration. If every application fails, broaden the investigation to disk health, malware, user-profile damage, and Windows component corruption.
Frequently asked questions
Is unzdll.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is a legacy third-party application DLL associated with BCB/Delphi UnZip. It should not normally be installed into System32 or SysWOW64.
Where should unzdll.dll be located?
Usually in the installation directory of the application that requests it, beside that program’s executable. The exact location depends on the application.
Recommended Free Tools
Is unzdll.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
The classic file is identified as PE32/x86, meaning 32-bit. A 32-bit application can use it on 64-bit Windows.
Should I register unzdll.dll?
Usually no. regsvr32 is not a general-purpose DLL repair tool, and an unzip helper DLL is not established as a COM or ActiveX component.
Will Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET fix this error?
Not normally. Install a runtime only when the application reports a missing dependency that specifically requires it. These runtimes do not normally provide unzdll.dll.
Can System File Checker restore it?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while unzdll.dll belongs to an application. Repair or reinstall the affected application first.
