Microsoft describes UMDF client drivers as DLL-based components installed through signed driver packages and INF files. That means usbdr.dll is loaded as part of the Windows driver framework, not registered or repaired like a normal COM application DLL. What the usbdr.dll error means
You may see messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because usbdr.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because usbdr.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting usbdr.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading usbdr.dll.”
- “usbdr.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These messages do not all mean the same thing.
If Windows says the file is missing, the file may be absent from the UMDF directory. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that usbdr.dll exists but one of its dependencies cannot be loaded. “Not designed to run on Windows” commonly points to a damaged file, an architecture mismatch, an invalid replacement, or another dependency problem.

First check the expected file path
Before repairing anything, check whether the file is present where Windows normally keeps it.
- Press Windows key + E to open File Explorer.
- Select the address bar.
- Enter:
text
C:WindowsSystem32driversUMDF
- Press Enter.
- Look for
usbdr.dll.
If the folder or file is missing, do not copy a similarly named file from another computer. If the file exists, right-click it, select Properties, and inspect the Digital Signatures tab. A genuine system copy should be in the expected Microsoft Windows path and have a valid Microsoft signature.
A file with the same name in Downloads, a temporary folder, an application directory, or an unexpected location is not automatically genuine. Do not run or restore it merely because its filename matches.

A failed or incomplete update can leave the component store and UMDF driver files inconsistent. Start with Windows Update because it can restore the correct files for your build.
Windows 11
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Reproduce the original error.
Windows 10
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the available updates.
- Restart and test the affected device or application.
If Windows Update fails, note the error shown in Settings and repair Windows Update before moving on. Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance covers update repair and related diagnostics.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the main repair path when usbdr.dll is missing, damaged, or absent from the UMDF directory. Run DISM first. It repairs the Windows component source that SFC uses, then SFC checks and replaces protected system files.

- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
cmd
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

- Wait for DISM to complete.
- Then run:
cmd
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Do not close the Command Prompt while either scan is running. Microsoft explains this DISM-before-SFC sequence in its guide to using System File Checker.
If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupt files, restart and test. If it reports that no integrity violations were found, the problem may be a dependency, driver package, quarantine event, or application-specific loader issue. If it cannot repair some files, run DISM again, make sure Windows Update is working, and repeat SFC.
The manual process can involve repeating scans and interpreting long repair results. Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan identifies, while repair actions are handled by the full version; it is optional, and Windows Update plus DISM and SFC remain the direct repair path.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a legitimate system file, but the filename alone cannot prove that a detection was false. Check the quarantine history before restoring anything.

- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
usbdr.dll. - Expand the entry and read the detected path and threat name.
Restore the file only if all of these are true:
- The file was located at
C:WindowsSystem32driversUMDFusbdr.dll. - Windows Security identifies it as quarantined rather than an active threat.
- The file is confirmed as a genuine Microsoft-signed Windows component.
- A current Defender scan does not indicate broader malware activity.
If the file came from an unofficial DLL download, or if it was found outside the expected Windows directory, do not restore it. Remove the untrusted copy and repair Windows with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC.

Fix 4: Repair the device or driver package
If the error began immediately after installing or updating a USB device, phone, docking station, Remote Desktop peripheral, or other hardware, the driver package may be incomplete or damaged.

First disconnect the affected device. Then:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Universal Serial Bus controllers, Human Interface Devices, Portable Devices, Display adapters, or the category matching your hardware.
- Look for a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Open the General tab and record the device status.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test the device.
If the problem started directly after a driver update:
- Return to the device’s Properties window.
- Select the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver, if available.
- Restart Windows.
If rollback is unavailable, uninstall and reinstall the device package:
- In Device Manager, right-click the affected device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select the option to remove the driver package.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the latest signed driver from Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer’s official support channel.
Use the driver’s installer or INF package rather than copying usbdr.dll into System32. Microsoft’s UMDF installation documentation explains why UMDF components belong to a driver package.
Manually checking every USB, chipset, docking, and peripheral driver is time-consuming, especially when Device Manager shows no obvious warning. Outbyte Driver Updater can use its free scan to identify stale drivers, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional, and the signed package from Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer is still the preferred source.
Fix 5: Reinstall the affected application only when appropriate
Reinstalling an application is not the primary fix for a missing Windows UMDF component. Do it when only one old application reports the error while Windows, Device Manager, and connected hardware work normally.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Find the application that displays the error.
- Select its menu or entry.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the current installer from that application’s official vendor.
- Install it and test again.
Do not assume that Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET will restore usbdr.dll. This file is associated with the Windows UMDF driver framework, and no evidence connects it to those redistributables.
If the application is old, run its installer by right-clicking it and selecting Run as administrator. You can also try the application’s Repair option if it appears under Settings > Apps.

Do not use regsvr32 for usbdr.dll
Do not run:
regsvr32 usbdr.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose COM registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. UMDF drivers are installed and configured through driver packages, INF files, and the Windows Driver Foundation. Registering usbdr.dll manually will not restore a missing driver package and may create incorrect registry state.
Microsoft documents the purpose of Regsvr32 separately from the UMDF installation model.
Do not download or copy a replacement DLL
Avoid DLL download websites, file archives, and forum attachments. A manually downloaded copy can contain malware, target the wrong Windows build, use the wrong architecture, or fail because the real problem is a missing dependency or damaged component store.
Do not copy usbdr.dll from:
- Another PC
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- An application folder
- A random download archive
A 64-bit Windows installation can use both 64-bit and 32-bit components, but that does not mean you should install both versions of this file. The correct architecture and build must come from Windows or the signed driver package.
The safe sources are Windows Update, Windows component repair, Windows recovery, and the relevant signed driver installer.

If the scans fail repeatedly:
- Open Event Viewer and inspect Windows Logs > System for errors occurring at the same time as the failure.
- Review:
text
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log
- Confirm that Windows Update can download and install updates.
- Disconnect recently installed USB or peripheral hardware.
- Reinstall the affected signed driver package.
- Run another full Microsoft Defender scan.

- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select a restore point created before the
usbdr.dllproblem. - Select Next, review the affected changes, and select Finish.
System Restore does not replace personal documents, but back up important data before using recovery tools. Microsoft describes the process in its guide to point-in-time restore.
If no restore point works, use Windows Recovery or an in-place repair installation. Back up important files first. A repair installation is appropriate when the component store remains damaged, Windows is unstable, or protected system files cannot be restored through normal servicing.

Public inventories report multiple architectures, including 32-bit, 64-bit, and ARM64 variants. Exact files vary by Windows build, so do not choose an architecture from a download page or copy a file from another installation.
Should I use Windows Features to restore it?
Usually not. Enabling or disabling optional Windows Features does not normally reinstall a UMDF driver component. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, or the relevant signed driver package.
When should I reinstall a USB or Remote Desktop driver?
Do so when the error began after a device or driver change, Device Manager reports a problem, or a particular USB, docking, phone, or Remote Desktop device no longer works. Use Device Manager, Windows Update, or the hardware manufacturer’s signed installer.
What if the file exists but Windows still says it is missing?
The message may refer to a dependency rather than usbdr.dll itself. Check the digital signature and path, run DISM and SFC, and repair the driver package associated with the failing device or operation.
