ortp.dll is an application file associated with Vivox voice-chat integrations, not a Windows system component. When Windows says ortp.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, repair or reinstall the game, launcher, viewer, or voice application that owns the file rather than copying a replacement into System32.
What this file actually does
ortp.dll is part of the oRTP real-time transport library used by Vivox Communications API integrations. Vivox voice features have appeared in games, older Unity applications, voice clients, and viewers such as Second Life-related software.

The file normally travels with the application’s other Vivox components, including files such as vivoxsdk.dll and related native libraries. It is not supplied as a normal Windows component, and there is no verified official standalone Microsoft or Vivox download for this DLL.
Windows usually searches an application’s own directory when that program loads a private DLL. Depending on the software, the expected location may be beside the main executable or inside an application-specific Vivox directory. A game could keep separate 32-bit and 64-bit packages, so the correct path and file depend on the program that produced the error.

Do not treat the filename alone as a version identifier. Public file records show different builds and architectures, and incomplete metadata should not be used to select a universal download.
Match the symptom to the likely cause
| What you see | Most likely explanation | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
“ortp.dll is missing from your computer” when one game starts |
The game’s Vivox file was deleted, quarantined, or never installed | Verify the game files |
| The error began after an update or cleanup | The update was incomplete or a cleanup tool removed an application file | Run launcher repair or verification |
“The specified module could not be found” while ortp.dll exists |
A dependency of ortp.dll, or another Vivox DLL, cannot load |
Repair the complete application package |
| “Not designed to run on Windows” or “contains an error” | Wrong architecture, mismatched files, or corruption | Remove mixed replacements and reinstall the app |
| Only one Windows account is affected | Per-user configuration or installation damage | Repair the app, then test another Windows profile |
| Several unrelated programs fail | A broader Windows component, storage, or security problem may exist | Check Windows, disk, and security health |
Fix ortp.dll errors in order
1. Identify the application that owns the file
Start with the exact program named in the error window. If the message only names ortp.dll, identify which shortcut or launcher you opened immediately beforehand.
To inspect a shortcut:
- Right-click the game or application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, check Target.
- Note the executable name and installation folder.
- Close the dialog without changing the target.
You can also open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc, select Details, and look for the executable that remains after the error appears.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not begin by searching C:WindowsSystem32. The relevant copy normally belongs to the application installation. Check the program’s folder only to understand what is missing, not to download a replacement.
If you find ortp.dll, also look for the surrounding Vivox files and the executable that loads them. A file can exist in the wrong folder and still be invisible to the program that needs it.
2. Verify the game or application files
File verification is the safest repair because it compares the installed package with the publisher’s copy and restores missing application files without mixing DLLs from unrelated products.
Steam
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game.
- Choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Click Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish.
- Restart Steam and launch the game again.
Steam may replace more than ortp.dll if other Vivox files or dependencies are damaged. That is expected.

- Open the Epic Games Launcher.
- Select Library.
- Find the affected game.
- Click the three dots beside its name.
- Select Manage.
- Click Verify.
- Wait for verification to complete, then start the game again.
Other launchers
Open the launcher’s library, select the game, and look for Verify, Repair, Scan and repair, or Validate files. If the launcher has an update control, apply the pending update before testing again.
If verification reports that files were repaired and the program starts normally, the issue was an incomplete or altered application installation. If verification finishes successfully but the error remains, continue with the architecture and dependency checks below.
3. Repair or reinstall the owning application
Use repair when the launcher or Windows provides it. Otherwise, reinstall the affected application from its official publisher installer or the store where you bought or installed it.
For a Windows-installed application:
- Press
Windows+I. - Open Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Click its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if shown.
- Select Repair.
- Launch the application again.
If Repair is unavailable or does not help, return to the same page and choose Uninstall. Restart Windows, download the installer from the application publisher or use the official store client, and install the program again.

For a game, uninstalling may remove local settings or large downloaded files. Check the game’s own backup or cloud-save options first. Do not copy an old ortp.dll back into the new installation after reinstalling. Let the installer supply the complete, matching Vivox package.
Run the launcher or installer as administrator only when the application’s installer requires elevated access:
- Right-click the launcher or installer.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Complete the repair or installation.
- Start the application normally afterward.
4. Check antivirus quarantine and protection history
Security software can remove or quarantine an application DLL. This is especially important if the problem began immediately after an update, cleanup, or security scan.
In Windows Security:
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review entries created when the application stopped launching.
- Expand a detection and inspect its file path and action.
Restore a quarantined file only when all of the following are true:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- The path belongs to the trusted game or application installation.
- The application came from its official installer or store.
- You recognize the file as part of that installation.
- You have checked the security product’s detection and updated its definitions.
Do not disable antivirus protection simply to install an unknown DLL. If the file is repeatedly removed, update the application and security definitions, then submit the detection to the security vendor as a possible false positive. A clean reinstall is safer than restoring a file from an untrusted archive.
5. Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Vivox packages can be architecture-specific. A 32-bit application needs its compatible 32-bit native files, while a 64-bit application needs the 64-bit set. The filename ortp.dll does not tell you which architecture it contains.
Useful clues include:
- An installation under
C:Program Files (x86)often indicates a 32-bit application. - An installation under
C:Program Filesoften indicates a 64-bit application. - A launcher may install the game executable and Vivox files in separate subfolders.
- The application’s documentation or support logs may state whether it is x86 or x64.
These folder names are clues, not proof. Do not rename ortp_x64.dll, copy a DLL from another game, or combine files from different Vivox SDK generations. A file with the correct name can still have incompatible exports, dependencies, or architecture.
If you already copied a replacement manually, remove that replacement and use launcher verification or a complete reinstall. The owning application must receive a matched set of native files.
6. Repair Visual C++ dependencies only when the error points to them
Installing or repairing the current Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable can help when a Vivox library depends on a missing runtime. It normally will not install ortp.dll itself.
Use Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable downloads. Install the package architecture required by the application. Installing both x86 and x64 packages can be appropriate when the computer runs both 32-bit and 64-bit software.
After installation:
- Restart Windows.
- Run the game or application’s file verification again.
- Launch the program.
If the same ortp.dll message remains, Visual C++ was not the missing application file. Repair or reinstall the owning program instead.

7. Do not use regsvr32 for this DLL
regsvr32 is generally for DLLs that provide the COM registration entry points expected by that utility. ortp.dll is normally a private runtime/library file loaded by the Vivox-enabled application, so registering it is not a normal repair step.
Running commands such as these will not usually restore the application package:
regsvr32 ortp.dll
If you receive an error from regsvr32, that does not prove the DLL is missing or that Windows needs a different copy. It usually means the command is unrelated to the way this library is used.
8. Use Windows repair commands for broader corruption
SFC and DISM repair Windows component corruption. They are appropriate when several Windows programs or system components are failing, Windows Update is damaged, or other system files report errors. They are not the primary method for restoring a third-party Vivox DLL.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Verify and launch the affected application again.
The command prompt should report whether repairs completed, found corruption, or could not repair everything. If SFC cannot repair files, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once. If only this one application still fails, return to the application repair or reinstall step.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting circular. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows problems and show what it finds; its full version performs the repair, but reinstalling the Vivox-powered application remains the definitive fix for an application-owned ortp.dll.
9. Check Windows Update and drivers only for wider system symptoms
A graphics or chipset driver does not normally install ortp.dll, so Device Manager is not a direct fix for a missing Vivox file. Check drivers only when the game also crashes with graphics errors, audio failures, device warnings, or other unrelated symptoms.
To inspect devices:
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, and any category showing a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver changes.
You can also open Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates and install applicable updates. Do not disable or remove a working device driver merely because ortp.dll is missing.
Manually hunting through Device Manager for stale versions can be tedious when several devices are involved. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver updates, while the full version installs them; it is optional and does not replace repairing the application that bundled ortp.dll.

10. Use Windows Features, System Restore, or malware scanning selectively
Windows Features is not a normal installation location for ortp.dll. Do not enable random legacy components in an attempt to create the file. Use Settings > Optional features > More Windows features only when the affected application’s own documentation specifically requires a Windows feature.
System Restore is reasonable when the failure began after a known, system-wide change:
- Open Start.
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point created before the change.
- Review affected programs before confirming.
Back up important personal data first. Restore will not reliably fix a damaged game installation, so verify or reinstall the application afterward if necessary.
Run a full or offline Microsoft Defender scan if the file disappeared unexpectedly, security software reports tampering, or an unsigned replacement appeared in the application folder. No single ortp.dll error proves malware, but an unexplained replacement deserves investigation.

Why random DLL downloads are a bad fix
A DLL download site can provide malware, an incomplete file, the wrong architecture, or a build with incompatible exports and dependencies. Even a genuine file with the right filename may belong to another Vivox SDK generation or another application.
Copying it into System32 or SysWOW64 creates a system-wide file that unrelated programs could discover. It can also hide the real problem, which may be a missing companion DLL, a quarantined file, or a broken installation.
Use the official game launcher, the application publisher’s installer, or the official store client instead. These sources can restore the complete package and preserve the architecture expected by the executable.
If ortp.dll exists but still will not load
Check its full path and compare it with the application’s executable and other Vivox files. If it is beside the executable but Windows reports “the specified module could not be found,” a dependency may be missing even though ortp.dll itself is present.
Recommended Free Tools
The practical fix is to repair or reinstall the complete application package. Do not replace individual companion files from another program. If the problem survives a clean reinstall, antivirus may be blocking a dependency, the application may be using the wrong architecture, or the vendor may need to provide an updated build.
Before contacting support, record:
- The exact application and executable name
- The full installation path
- The complete error text
- Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit
- When the problem began
- The result of launcher verification
- Any antivirus quarantine action
- Windows version and recent updates
- Relevant launcher or application logs
FAQ
Is ortp.dll part of Windows?
No. It is an application DLL associated with Vivox and oRTP voice components. It should not normally be installed in System32 or SysWOW64.
Can Visual C++ install ortp.dll?
Normally, no. Visual C++ may restore a runtime dependency required by the Vivox library, but the application installer or launcher must provide ortp.dll.
Should I register ortp.dll with regsvr32?
No, not normally. It is generally loaded privately by the application rather than registered as a COM component.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Does the error mean the file itself is missing?
Not always. “The specified module could not be found” can refer to a dependency that ortp.dll needs. Repair the complete application package instead of replacing only one file.
Which version should I download?
Do not choose a universal version. The correct build depends on the owning application, Vivox package, and x86 or x64 architecture. Restore it through the official installer or launcher.
What is the final fix if verification fails?
Uninstall the affected program, restart Windows, and reinstall it from its official source. If that still fails, provide the application vendor with the path, architecture, error text, antivirus history, and launcher logs.
