Used CPU Buying Guide: How to Reduce the Risk of Hidden Hardware Bans

A used CPU can pass a boot test without proving a game service will accept the computer. Here’s how to check the part and limit what you can’t verify before buying.

A used CPU can be electrically sound and still be part of a computer that a game service restricts. There is no pre-purchase ban-status check established in the sources here, so buyers should treat compatibility, physical condition, testing, and return terms as separate safeguards—not as proof the computer is clear to play. Riot’s guidance documents device-level restrictions for VALORANT; it does not establish that every game uses the same system or that a CPU alone determines access.

What a hardware restriction does—and does not—tell you

Riot describes a device restriction, not a universal “banned CPU” test

Riot says its hardware-ID (HWID) restrictions target physical components or device use. Its guidance also warns that using another account on a restricted computer can have consequences for that account. This is Riot policy, not evidence that every game publisher or anti-cheat system works the same way. The public information cited here does not establish a universal identifier recipe or show that a processor by itself is always the deciding component. Riot’s hardware-ban guidance

A working processor is not proof of game access

Riot’s help page states: “VAN 152 means the device you’re using has been restricted from playing because of a hardware ID (HWID) ban.” The error indicates a device restriction, not necessarily a defect in the CPU. A successful boot or benchmark checks operation; it cannot establish whether a publisher’s service will permit play. Riot says reinstalling the game or Vanguard, changing the connection, and restarting do not remove this restriction. Riot’s VAN 152 guidance

Keep duration claims specific to the game and sanction

Riot’s current VALORANT error reference describes a four-month typical duration for an HWID ban. “Typical” is not a guarantee for every case, and this duration should not be applied to other Riot sanctions, other games, or other anti-cheat providers. Riot’s VAN 152 guidance

Can you check a used CPU for a ban before buying?

The sources reviewed for this guide do not show a public pre-purchase lookup that tells a buyer whether a CPU or computer is restricted from a game. Manufacturer serial-number and warranty tools help identify a product or direct support; they are not presented as game-ban checks. This does not rule out private checks by a seller or game service, but a matching serial number, warranty result, or seller assurance is not ban clearance.

Riot says affected players can submit a support request for reevaluation. Riot investigates and decides whether to lift or extend a restriction. That is a route for affected players, not a buyer’s pre-sale clearance process. Avoid testing a suspected restricted computer by signing in with unrelated accounts: Riot warns those accounts may also face consequences. Riot’s hardware-ban guidance

How to reduce ordinary used-CPU buying risks

1. Confirm the exact part and platform compatibility

  • Ask for a clear photo of the exact model and its markings. Where relevant, request the serial or batch details. AMD provides processor serial lookup guidance; Intel advises users to retain ATPO and FPO information. A mismatch or evasive answer is a reason to pause, but matching identifiers do not show that a computer is free of game restrictions. AMD processor identification and warranty information Intel processor identification information
  • Check the motherboard maker’s CPU support list and the BIOS version required for that exact processor. AMD directs buyers to current CPU support lists and BIOS information; confirm the details for your own motherboard before paying. AMD processor support information
  • Compare listings by exact CPU model and performance for your needs, board and BIOS compatibility, visible condition, seller history, testing opportunity, return period, total cost, and applicable warranty terms. Do not assume a used buyer automatically receives full manufacturer warranty coverage: Intel’s and AMD’s cited policies have defined retail, boxed, or tray coverage and original-purchase conditions. Check the precise product, seller, and regional terms. AMD warranty information Intel processor information

2. Agree on inspection, testing, and returns before payment

  • Inspect the processor and its pins or contacts and substrate for visible damage. Review packaging and seller history as supporting evidence, not proof of operation; photos alone cannot demonstrate that a part works. Tom’s Hardware guide to buying used PC parts
  • Ask for a clear return period and permission to test the processor. For an in-person purchase, ask to see it boot in a compatible system. For a remote purchase, keep the listing and seller terms and document the item’s condition and your opening and test process.
  • Run a stability test under load promptly if the seller’s terms permit it. A passing test can reveal some functional faults, but it cannot reveal whether a game service accepts the device.

3. Treat warranty and seller claims narrowly

A warranty lookup can help establish product identity or the support route, but coverage depends on the exact part, purchase history, seller, and regional terms. Neither a warranty result nor a seller’s claim that the CPU is “ban-free” is a publisher-issued clearance certificate. No likelihood estimate for a second-hand CPU carrying a game-related restriction is established by the cited sources, so a buyer should not infer that the risk is common—or negligible.

If the computer reports VAN 152

  1. Do not treat the message as evidence that the processor has failed. Riot identifies VAN 152 as a device restriction tied to an HWID ban.
  2. Do not expect reinstalling VALORANT or Vanguard, changing networks, or restarting to remove the restriction; Riot says these actions do not resolve it.
  3. Consult Riot’s official support guidance. The affected account holder can submit a request for reevaluation, after which Riot investigates and decides whether the restriction changes.
  4. Do not sign unrelated accounts into the suspected restricted computer as a test. Riot warns that accounts used on a restricted device can face consequences too.

These steps apply to Riot’s documented VAN 152 behavior. The cited evidence does not establish the same error, review route, identifier system, or duration for other games or anti-cheat providers.
