If uxinit.dll is missing, corrupt, or “not designed to run on Windows,” restore the Windows-provided copy with DISM and System File Checker rather than downloading a replacement.
What uxinit.dll is and where it belongs
Windows identifies this file as the Windows User Experience Session Initialization Dll. It is normally found at:
C:WindowsSystem32UXInit.dll
On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains 64-bit system files. The corresponding 32-bit system directory is normally:
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Do not copy a file from SysWOW64 into System32, or the other way around. The two directories serve different architectures.

Microsoft-published Windows 8 update information lists historical x86 builds of Uxinit.dll, but versions and sizes vary with the Windows release, architecture, updates, and servicing state. Do not use an old version or file size as a universal specification for Windows 10 or Windows 11.
| What you find | What it suggests |
|---|---|
C:WindowsSystem32UXInit.dll |
The expected Windows system location |
| A copy beside a game or application | A private copy or a potentially unsafe replacement |
| Missing from the expected location | Deletion, quarantine, corruption, or servicing damage |
| “Bad Image” or “not designed to run on Windows” | File corruption, an incompatible replacement, or component damage |
| Error at sign-in or during startup | Windows session, Explorer, or Winlogon initialization trouble |
What the error messages mean
You may see one of these messages:
- “The program can’t start because UXInit.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The application has failed to start because UXInit.dll was not found.”
- “UXINIT.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- A
winlogon.exe - Bad Imagemessage that namesUXInit.dll.
The application named in the message does not necessarily own this DLL. Windows may report the error while loading an application, Explorer, or the sign-in process because a required system component cannot be loaded.
The timing provides a useful clue:
- At boot or sign-in: prioritize Windows repair and recovery.
- After reaching the desktop: check Windows servicing, antivirus history, and system modifications.
- Only when launching one application: determine whether the message names a private copy in that application’s folder before repairing the application itself.
Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the safest first repair when the error names System32UXInit.dll, appears at login, or affects Windows itself.
Open an elevated Command Prompt
- Press the Windows key.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
Run DISM first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to complete. Then run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands finish.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, which supplies replacement files. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies. Running SFC first can leave it without a usable repair source.
Success usually means DISM completes without a repair failure and SFC reports that it found no integrity violations or successfully repaired corrupted files. After restarting, check whether the original uxinit.dll message has disappeared.
If DISM says it cannot find the source files, use a genuine, matching Windows installation source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the correct path to the repair source. The source must match the Windows edition and architecture closely enough for servicing to use it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf SFC reports that it could not repair some files, restart and run it again after DISM completes. If it still fails, continue with the recovery steps below rather than copying a DLL from the internet.
Repeating DISM and SFC without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting tedious. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the specific repair issues involved; its free scan shows what it found, while repair features are handled by the full version. It is optional, and Windows servicing remains the appropriate repair path for a damaged Windows copy.
Fix 2: Install pending Windows updates
A failed or incomplete update can leave protected files inconsistent with the component store.
Windows 11
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install everything offered.
- Restart when Windows requests it.
- Check Windows Update again after restarting.
Windows 10
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Open Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install pending updates and restart.
After updating, run DISM and SFC again if the error remains. If the failure began immediately after an update and Windows cannot start normally, use Windows Recovery Environment instead of repeatedly attempting to log in.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine and recent malware cleanup
Security software may quarantine a damaged or infected copy of a system file. Malware cleanup is one possible cause, but the presence of this error does not prove that malware caused it.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start.
- Type
Windows Security. - Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving
UXInit.dll,System32, or a Windows system process.
Only restore or allow a quarantined file after verifying that it is the genuine Windows file, is in the expected Windows directory, and is not associated with an active detection. If you are unsure, leave the item quarantined and repair Windows with DISM and SFC.
Protection History does not retain events indefinitely, so an older quarantine action may no longer appear. Run a full scan, and consider an Offline scan if Windows Security recommends it.
Fix 4: Undo theme patchers and system customization tools
Third-party theme patchers and system customization utilities can modify Windows visual-experience files. Reports involving custom themes have included UXInit.dll, uxtheme.dll, and themeui.dll.
If the problem began after installing a custom-theme tool or system patcher:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Locate the theme patcher or customization utility.
- Uninstall it.
- Restart Windows.
- Run DISM followed by SFC.
Do not reinstall the patcher until Windows is stable. If the utility changed protected files, uninstalling it alone may not restore the originals.
Fix 5: Repair the affected application only when its folder is involved
Reinstalling an application is useful when the error points to a copy inside that application’s installation directory. It does not replace a damaged Windows copy in C:WindowsSystem32.

Before reinstalling:
- Note the exact path shown in the error.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair or Reset, if provided.
- If those options are unavailable or ineffective, uninstall the application.
- Restart Windows.
- Install it again from the developer’s official installer or an official store.
If the message names System32UXInit.dll, repair Windows first. Do not assume that reinstalling Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET will restore this file. There is no evidence that those runtimes provide uxinit.dll.

Fix 6: Update drivers only when the timing points to a driver problem
A graphics or display driver can affect Windows visual behavior, but it is not established as the normal source of uxinit.dll. Update drivers when the problem began after a display change, a failed driver installation, or a device error.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
You can also check the device’s Properties and review the Device status message. A yellow warning icon indicates a separate device problem that should be addressed.
Manually hunting through hardware pages and guessing which of several drivers is stale can be time-consuming. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues; its free scan shows the findings, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace DISM or SFC when the Windows DLL itself is damaged.

If Windows worked before a recent update, theme patcher, driver installation, or system change, System Restore may reverse the change without removing personal files.

If System Restore is unavailable or does not help, use Startup Repair from Troubleshoot > Advanced options when the problem prevents Windows from starting. For persistent component-store damage, consider an in-place repair installation. Back up important files before using Reset this PC, and understand which reset option preserves or removes personal data.
If you cannot reach the desktop
Use one of these paths:
- Safe Mode: enter Windows Recovery Environment, then choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart and select Safe Mode.
- Command Prompt in Windows RE: open Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Command Prompt and use recovery commands there.
- System Restore: use a restore point from before the error.
- Installation media: boot from genuine Windows installation media to access repair tools.
The /Online DISM command targets the currently running Windows installation. In Windows RE, the Windows drive may not be C:. Identify the correct Windows volume before using offline repair commands.
How to verify uxinit.dll safely
A filename alone does not prove authenticity.
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to
C:WindowsSystem32. - Right-click
UXInit.dll. - Select Properties.
- Check the Digital Signatures tab for a valid Microsoft signature.
- Review the Details tab for Windows-related file information.
- Confirm that the path is the expected Windows system directory.
A valid signature is useful evidence, but it does not replace system repair. SFC is the authoritative built-in check for protected Windows files. Avoid judging authenticity by an old version number or file size because those values vary between Windows builds and architectures.
What not to do
Do not download uxinit.dll from a DLL archive
Random DLL download sites sites may provide malware, the wrong Windows build, the wrong architecture, or a file that does not match the component store. Copying it into System32 can create additional loader failures.
Windows also searches several locations when loading DLLs, including an application directory and system directories. A rogue copy beside an executable can therefore create a DLL-hijacking risk.
Do not run regsvr32 as a generic repair
regsvr32 uxinit.dll is not an evidence-based fix. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that implement the appropriate self-registration entry point, such as DllRegisterServer. A Windows session/runtime DLL is not automatically a self-registering ActiveX or COM component.
Do not copy between System32 and SysWOW64
Those folders represent different system architectures on 64-bit Windows. Moving files between them can turn a missing-file problem into an architecture mismatch.
FAQ
Does Windows 10 or Windows 11 include uxinit.dll?
uxinit.dll is a Windows component associated with user-session initialization. Exact file exposure and metadata vary by Windows release, architecture, and servicing state, so do not rely on one historical version or size as a universal Windows 10 or Windows 11 value.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Is uxinit.dll malware?
The genuine file is supplied by Microsoft Windows. A copy in an unexpected folder, without a valid Microsoft signature, or with suspicious detection details requires investigation. The filename alone is not proof of malware.
Should I reinstall Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not as the primary repair. There is no evidence that those runtimes provide this Windows component. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC first.
What if SFC cannot repair the file?
Run DISM first, restart, and run SFC again. If it still fails, inspect:
C:WindowsLogsCBSCBS.log
C:WindowsLogsDISMDISM.log
Then consider System Restore, Startup Repair, an in-place repair, or Reset this PC after backing up important data.
What information should I include when asking for help?
Include the Windows version and build, the exact error text, the full path shown, whether it occurs at boot, login, or application launch, recent antivirus or malware-cleanup actions, and whether a custom theme or system patcher was installed. Also report the results of DISM and SFC.
