How the leather system works
Leather is made at a Tannery rather than picked up as a finished material. The progression has three separate parts:
- Reach the Blood Altar portion of the opening progression.
- Track and defeat Keely the Frost Archer.
- Spend hides and planks to construct a Tannery, then process hides into leather.
Keely is the important gate. Killing other early bosses will not substitute for her unlock in the guides covering this recipe. The guides describe her as a level 20 V Blood target.

Unlock Keely the Frost Archer
Reach the Blood Altar step
The tutorial leads you to the Blood Altar. Once that feature is available, you can select V Blood targets and follow their trails. If Keely is not available in your interface, continue the tutorial until the Blood Altar objective is complete; searching the world manually is unlikely to reveal the boss marker before then.
Select Keely as your target
Open the Blood Altar, find Keely the Frost Archer in the V Blood list, and set her as the active target. The game then provides a blood trail to follow. Guides place her encounter at the Bandit Trapper Camp in Farbane Woods.

Defeat the boss
Keely’s listed level is 20. Treat that number as a progression indicator, not a guarantee that the fight will be easy: your equipment, blood quality, consumables, terrain and nearby camp enemies all affect the encounter. Clear enough surrounding threats to avoid being interrupted, then finish Keely and claim the V Blood reward.

The reward is consistently described as the Tannery unlock. One guide summary also lists the leather recipe, Traveler’s Wrap and Empty Canteen among the rewards. Another summary says Keely provides a schematic rather than a recipe. Because those descriptions conflict, regard the exact reward wording as version-dependent; the practical check is whether the Tannery and its leather entry appear in your build menu after the defeat.
Build the Tannery

Open the construction menu, navigate to Production > Refining, choose Tannery and place it inside your castle. You need the full material cost in your inventory or available building storage according to the rules of your current game version. If the station is absent, the problem is usually the Keely unlock rather than a missing placement location.
Why the first 160 hides matter
Construction consumes a large opening stock of hides. Plan your hunting before travelling to the boss so you can build immediately after returning. If you spend all of your hides on the station, leather production cannot begin until you gather another batch; the build cost and processing input are separate expenses.
Turn hides into leather
The standard conversion

These are recipe values, not a measured production statistic. The Tannery consumes the hide input in groups of 16 for each leather output. If your current crafting panel shows a different item name or quantity, follow that panel: the 2026 patch state is not confirmed by an official note in the available sources.

Use the station
- Interact with the completed Tannery.
- Choose the leather entry in the crafting list. Depending on the build, the input may be displayed as Animal Hide or Rugged Hide.
- Place enough of that input into the station to complete one or more 16-hide batches.
- Leave the station running and collect the finished leather when the queue completes.
If the leather entry is missing, do not assume that more hides will fix it. First verify that Keely was defeated on the same world and that the Tannery construction recipe is unlocked. A schematic-style unlock presentation may also use different wording from the recipe descriptions in older guides.
Where to get hides before you have leather
Hunt early beasts
Wolves, bears and deer are identified as early hide sources. They let you gather the construction stock without waiting for a later biome or a specialized activity. Keep the material name in mind when comparing guides: a source that says “Animal Hide” may be describing the same role that a newer version labels “Rugged Hide.”

The Bandit Trapper Camp serves two purposes in this progression. It is the reported location of Keely’s encounter, and it is also listed as a hide loot source. Once the boss is defeated, revisiting the camp can help replenish the material needed for the station and its first batches.
Check Brighthaven Docks
Brighthaven Docks is another listed loot source. The guides do not establish a fixed quantity per run, so treat it as an additional place to search rather than a guaranteed hide quota. Loot availability can depend on respawns and your current version.

Increase production without wasting materials
Use multiple Tannery stations
Older guide advice suggests operating two or three Tannery sites when you need leather quickly. Multiple stations do not change the 16-to-1 recipe; they let you process more complete batches at the same time. Build additional stations only after reserving enough hides for the construction costs and the leather amount you actually need.

Some guides report that enclosing a Tannery in a room grants the Confined Castle Room bonus, described there as +25% crafting speed. This information has lower confidence than the unlock and recipe values, and patch-level support was not confirmed. If your castle displays the bonus, use the in-game tooltip as the authority. If it does not appear, do not assume the room layout is defective; the bonus may have changed or been removed in your build.
Choose batches deliberately
Because the recipe consumes complete groups of 16, gather enough hides for the number of leather pieces you need rather than loading an arbitrary amount. For example, a request for seven leather requires 112 hides; a request for ten requires 160. These calculations describe the recipe ratio only and do not include the 160 hides spent to construct the first station.

Guides use both Animal Hide and Rugged Hide for the Tannery input. A newer search summary claims that the input changed to Rugged Hide, but that summary is internally inconsistent and no official patch note was identified to settle the issue. This means an old guide can appear “wrong” even when its progression advice is otherwise useful.

- Use the exact item label shown in your inventory and Tannery panel.
- Do not discard one name because a guide uses the other.
- When asking for help, include your game version and a screenshot or exact tooltip text.
- Check official patch notes before relying on a recipe table copied from an earlier release.
The unlock path remains easier to verify in-game than the terminology: if Keely is defeated and the refining menu still does not show the station, investigate the unlock state first.

Troubleshooting the unlock and crafting process
Keely is not listed at the Blood Altar
- Continue the opening objectives until the Blood Altar step is complete.
- Confirm that you are viewing V Blood targets rather than a different menu category.
- Check that the target is named Keely the Frost Archer; similarly named enemies are not the boss unlock.
The blood trail does not lead to the expected place
Use the active Blood Altar trail and current-world marker rather than an old route guide. The reported destination is Bandit Trapper Camp in Farbane Woods, but a patch can alter navigation or camp details.
The Tannery is still locked after the fight
- Verify that Keely was actually defeated and that the V Blood reward registered.
- Return to the construction menu and inspect Production > Refining.
- Reloading the world or re-entering the castle can help refresh a delayed unlock display, but the recipe should not require a second boss.
- If the station remains unavailable, compare the result with your exact patch notes; the available guide summaries do not establish a universal 2026 fix.
You cannot afford the station
Farm wolves, bears and deer first, then search the Bandit Trapper Camp or Brighthaven Docks. Remember that the station’s construction stock is consumed before any leather can be made. Keep a separate reserve for your first batches instead of treating the build cost as part of the processing ratio.
The speed bonus is missing
Confirm that the Tannery is enclosed as a valid castle room and read the bonus shown by your current interface. The reported +25% value is not confirmed for every patch, so the absence of that exact number is not by itself evidence of a building mistake.
What about thick leather?
Do not confuse the ordinary leather recipe with thick leather. A 2024 Steam discussion claims that a separate thick-leather recipe is locked behind Frostmaw the Mountain Terror. That is a single forum report, not a confirmed patch document, so treat it as provisional. If your version shows a thick-leather entry, follow its displayed unlock requirement rather than assuming Keely’s Tannery reward covers it.
A practical progression plan
- Complete the tutorial objectives through the Blood Altar.
- Set Keely the Frost Archer as the target and follow the trail to the Bandit Trapper Camp area.
- Defeat Keely and confirm the V Blood reward has been recorded.
- Gather enough hides and planks for the Tannery, plus a reserve for the first leather batches.
- Build the station under Production > Refining.
- Load the currently displayed hide item in complete 16-unit batches and collect leather as each batch finishes.
- Add a second or third station only when your material supply and castle space justify parallel processing.
- For any conflicting recipe name, speed value or thick-leather requirement, trust the tooltip and patch notes for your installed version.
This order prevents the two most common progression errors: hunting for leather before Keely has unlocked the station, and spending the entire hide stock on construction with nothing left to process.
