Chef Infra lets you describe the state you want—packages, files, services, users and other system settings—as code, then repeatedly converge machines toward that state. The practical beginner path is to install Chef Workstation, generate a version-controlled chef-repo and cookbook, write a small recipe, test it locally, and run Chef Infra Client on a target node. Add Chef Infra Server only when you need centralized policy and cookbook distribution; the official server overview says that product is deprecated and reaches end of life in November 2026, so new deployments should evaluate Chef 360 Platform before committing to a server-based design.

What Chef Infra does

Chef Infra is an infrastructure-as-code automation platform. Instead of treating a server as a sequence of manual changes, you declare the desired state in Ruby-based recipes. Chef Infra Client evaluates those declarations on a node and takes the actions needed to make the node match them. Running the same code again is intended to preserve the desired state rather than repeat harmful changes.

This model matters when a machine is rebuilt, a configuration drifts, or the same setup must be applied to many systems. A cookbook provides the reusable distribution unit: it may contain recipes, attributes, custom resources, files, templates, Ohai plugins and a metadata.rb file. Recipes use Chef’s resource DSL, so a short resource declaration can represent an operational change while remaining reviewable in version control.

Understand the three main Chef components

Component Purpose Where it runs or is used What it handles
Chef Workstation Authoring, testing and administration environment Your development or operations computer Chef Infra Client, Chef InSpec, Chef Habitat, chef and knife command-line tools, Test Kitchen and related cookbook tools
Chef Infra Client Node agent that applies configuration Each managed system Retrieves required configuration and converges the node using its run list or Policyfile
Chef Infra Server Central configuration-data hub Central service contacted by managed nodes Stores and distributes cookbooks, policies and node metadata
Cookbook Fundamental distribution unit Developed in the repository and consumed by clients Recipes plus optional attributes, resources, files, templates, plugins and metadata
Policyfile Immutable definition of a complete configuration set Resolved on Workstation and consumed by a node group Cookbook dependencies and attributes, recorded in Policyfile.lock.json

Workstation is where you develop and test. Client is the process that changes a managed node. Server, when used, supplies the data those clients need. Keeping these roles distinct prevents a common beginner mistake: installing the authoring tools and assuming that alone manages a remote machine.

Install Chef Workstation first

The quickest supported starting point is Chef Workstation. It bundles the client, testing and authoring utilities so you do not have to assemble separate tools before writing your first cookbook. Install the package for your workstation’s operating system, then confirm that the chef and chef-client commands are available in a terminal.

  • Use Workstation as the controlled place for cookbook source, dependency resolution and tests.
  • Keep the resulting repository under version control; Chef’s setup guidance treats repository contents as source code.
  • Plan access to any test virtual machine or target node before attempting a remote run. Local mode can teach the workflow without a server.

Create a chef-repo and your first cookbook

A chef-repo is the project directory that holds cookbooks, data bags and Policyfiles. Create one with the generator command:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
chef generate repo chef-repo

Change into that directory and create a cookbook:

chef generate cookbook new_cookbook

The generator creates the cookbook structure, including a default recipe and metadata. Put the repository in your version-control system immediately. Review changes as code, give each cookbook a clear purpose, and avoid editing generated files outside the intended locations unless you understand the effect on the cookbook’s metadata and tests.

Write a first recipe with a file resource

Open recipes/default.rb in the new cookbook. A deliberately small exercise is a file resource that declares a file and its contents:

  • COMPACT RESEALABLE PACKAGE: store your pack of Windex Gaming Wipes anywhere in your home for whenever a quick and easy wipedown is needed
file '/tmp/hello.txt' do
  content 'Hello, Chef!'
end

This example teaches the central Chef behavior without requiring a package repository or application. The resource describes the desired path and content. On the first convergence Chef creates the file. If you delete it, a later run creates it again; if you edit the content manually, a later run restores the declared content. Those changes demonstrate convergence and drift correction rather than a one-time script.

For real systems, put application-specific paths and permissions in an intentional design rather than copying this temporary-file example. Treat every resource as a declaration that may run repeatedly on production nodes.

Run the cookbook locally while learning

Local mode lets you practice the client workflow without standing up a Chef Infra Server. From the repository, run the cookbook through an override run list:

chef-client --local-mode --override-runlist example

The quickstart uses example as the cookbook name. If you generated new_cookbook, use that cookbook’s name in the override run list instead. Chef Infra Client reads the cookbook from the local repository and converges the machine on which you run the command.

  1. Run the command once and inspect the client output for the resource that created /tmp/hello.txt.
  2. Delete the file and run the same command again. The declared file should be recreated.
  3. Edit the file manually, run again, and check that the declared content returns.
  4. Commit the recipe and any intentional test changes to version control before expanding the cookbook.

Local mode is useful for learning, experiments and isolated development. It does not by itself provide a central inventory, shared cookbook distribution or coordinated node groups; those concerns belong to a centralized design or another Chef platform direction.

Add tests, linting and a disposable machine

A production-quality cookbook is more than a recipe that works once. The current Workstation workflow includes cookbook tests, linting, a local virtual machine, Test Kitchen and an InSpec profile. Use those layers for different questions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Linting: catches style and cookbook-authoring problems before execution.
  • Cookbook tests: exercise the cookbook’s logic in the project workflow.
  • Test Kitchen: applies the cookbook to a disposable local VM so you can observe convergence on a clean system.
  • InSpec: expresses checks about the resulting machine and verifies that the intended state exists.

Run these checks before uploading a cookbook or assigning it to shared nodes. Test a clean machine, not only the workstation where files may already exist. Keep test configuration and profiles in version control alongside the cookbook so reviewers can see both what Chef should do and how you verify it.

When centralized management is appropriate

In a centralized Chef architecture, Chef Infra Server stores cookbook and policy data plus node metadata. A Chef Infra Client installed on each managed node requests the configuration it needs, then performs as much work as possible on that node. Workstation is used to resolve dependencies, authenticate and upload cookbook or policy data with the chef and knife tools.

The operational sequence is:

  1. Develop and test the cookbook on Workstation.
  2. Configure the credentials and organization details required to reach the central service.
  3. Upload the cookbook or policy data with the Chef command-line tooling.
  4. Configure each node’s client to authenticate and identify the appropriate run list or policy.
  5. Run Chef Infra Client on nodes so they retrieve the approved data and converge locally.

Centralization helps when many nodes must receive the same reviewed artifacts, when teams need a shared source of cookbook versions, or when node groups require controlled promotion. It also introduces service administration, credentials, network reachability and a lifecycle decision that does not exist in a purely local workflow.

Choose run lists or Policyfiles deliberately

Traditional run lists identify the recipes a node should run. A Policyfile instead describes one complete, immutable set of cookbooks, dependencies and attributes. Workstation resolves that dependency set and writes Policyfile.lock.json. The locked result is uploaded and associated with a node group.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Decision axis Traditional run-list workflow Policyfile workflow
Configuration definition Node run list points to recipes and cookbook versions supplied through the Chef environment One Policyfile defines the complete cookbook and dependency set
Dependency visibility Review requires following cookbook and environment version relationships Workstation resolves the set and records it in Policyfile.lock.json
Promotion safety Changes depend on how versions and environments are coordinated The locked set can be promoted as an identified unit to a node group
Best fit Existing installations built around run lists and established server practices Teams that want an explicit, reviewable and repeatable dependency lock

Policyfiles do not remove the need for testing. They make the dependency result visible before clients run it, which improves review and promotion safety. Commit the lock file with the Policyfile so a later resolution does not silently change what a node receives.

Chef Infra Server’s 2026 lifecycle warning

Chef’s official Chef Infra Server overview states that “Chef Infra Server is deprecated and will reach end-of-life status in November 2026.” It identifies Chef 360 Platform as the current platform direction. This is material to any new architecture: a server deployment started shortly before that date may create migration work during its expected operating life.

HUANUO FlowLift™ Dual Monitor Stand, Fully Adjustable Gaming Monitor Desk Mount for 13–32″ Computer Screens, Full Motion VESA 75x75/100x100 with C-Clamp & Grommet Base, Each Arm Holds 4.4 to 19.8 lbs
  • Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
  • Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
  • Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
  • Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
  • Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.

If you already operate Chef Infra Server, document your current cookbooks, policies, node groups, credentials and integrations, then ask Chef or Progress for a supported migration path. If you are starting a new project, compare the required capabilities with Chef 360 Platform before selecting a server-based design. Do not interpret the deprecation notice as proof that existing clients stop working immediately; it is a lifecycle checkpoint that should shape procurement, support and migration planning.

Common first-project problems and practical checks

The command cannot find the cookbook

Confirm that you are running from the chef-repo, that the cookbook directory is inside that repository, and that the name in --override-runlist matches the generated cookbook. A cookbook named new_cookbook is not addressed as example unless you actually created one with that name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The recipe runs but the expected change is absent

Read the client output and verify that the resource is in the recipe selected by the run list. Check the exact path, spelling and content in recipes/default.rb. For a file resource, inspect the target path after the run rather than relying only on a successful process exit.

Local testing passes but a clean VM fails

Use Test Kitchen to reproduce the cookbook on a disposable machine. A workstation can contain files, packages or settings that hide undeclared prerequisites. Add the missing prerequisite to the cookbook or test setup, then rerun linting and the VM test before touching shared nodes.

A centralized run cannot retrieve policy or cookbooks

Check credentials, organization or server configuration, network access and the node’s assigned run list or Policyfile association. Upload from Workstation only after local tests pass, and confirm that the node is requesting the version or locked policy you intended.

Manual fixes keep disappearing

That behavior is usually the intended consequence of declaring a different state. Decide whether the manual value is correct; if it is, change the recipe and review it through version control. If it is not, leave the declaration in place and allow the next convergence to restore the approved state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A maintainable operating routine

  1. Create or update cookbook code on a dedicated branch.
  2. Review recipes, metadata, dependencies, tests and Policyfile lock changes together.
  3. Run linting, cookbook tests, Test Kitchen and InSpec checks appropriate to the change.
  4. Try the approved cookbook in local mode or a disposable VM before central upload.
  5. Upload only the reviewed cookbook or locked policy from Workstation.
  6. Promote to a limited node group first, observe convergence, then expand the assignment.
  7. Record the Chef platform lifecycle decision, especially if Chef Infra Server is involved before its November 2026 end of life.

This sequence keeps authoring, verification, distribution and node execution separate. It also gives you a clear recovery point: if a change is wrong, stop promotion, revert the version-controlled cookbook or Policyfile, and converge affected nodes on the last approved definition.
