Stunlock Studios warns that the server list can fail to load every private server. First try the game’s Direct Connect option. If you need the server to appear publicly, check the settings file the server is actually loading, enable both listing flags, open and forward the configured UDP ports, and allow the executable through the host firewall. New listings can also take a few minutes to appear.

What a missing server entry actually tells you
The server browser performs discovery; it does not provide a definitive health check. Stunlock says the list fetches thousands of servers at once and can fail to load every private server matching a search. A server can therefore be running and reachable even while its name is absent from the browser.

Separate the problem into two questions:
- Discovery: Is the server registered with the service the client is searching, and is the browser returning that result?
- Reachability: Can a player send traffic to the host’s game and query ports through the firewall and router?
Direct Connect tests reachability without waiting for browser discovery. Listing flags, port configuration, firewall rules and router forwarding determine whether a self-hosted server can be found and reached from outside the host’s network.
Use this order to fix the problem
- Confirm that the dedicated-server process is running and that you are using the current 1.1.x PC dedicated-server branch.
- Identify the settings directory loaded by the launch command.
- Check
ListOnEOS,ListOnSteam,PortandQueryPortinServerHostSettings.json. - Allow the executable and both configured UDP ports through the host firewall.
- Forward those same ports to the server computer’s LAN address on the router.
- Start the server from its installation directory, wait a few minutes, and search with all servers and settings displayed.
- If the entry is still absent, use Direct Connect with the public address and game port.
- If the client reports Unknown Status or local saves disappear, restore valid JSON files before changing more settings.
1. Confirm the dedicated server is running and current
Install the supported server branch
The current official PC instructions cover the 1.1.x dedicated-server branch. The dedicated server is downloaded free from Steam’s Tools section. An installed tool is not proof that its process is running: check the host’s task list, console window or service manager and confirm that the executable remains active after launch.

Use the server files supplied with the same branch as the client whenever possible. If the game client and server are on incompatible versions, correct networking will not make the server usable.
Launch from the installation directory
Start the executable from the directory that contains the server’s data folders. Relative paths in a batch file and the location of the settings files depend on the process’s working directory and launch arguments. Running a shortcut or script from another directory can make you edit one file while the server reads another.

Copy or rename that example before editing it; updates can overwrite the supplied file. Put your custom launch arguments in the copy, then run that copy from the server installation directory.
2. Find the settings files the server is actually reading
V Rising uses two important JSON files. ServerHostSettings.json controls hosting and listing; ServerGameSettings.json controls gameplay. Editing the wrong copy is a common reason a change appears to have no effect.

Stop the server before editing. Inspect the batch file or service definition for -persistentDataPath, then edit the files inside that path’s Settings folder. If the argument is absent, check the normal local-override directory first and use the installation’s StreamingAssetsSettings files as the defaults.

Make a backup of both JSON files. Preserve quotation marks, commas, braces and capitalization. JSON does not accept comments, trailing commas or typographic quotation marks.

3. Enable both public-listing registrations
Open the active ServerHostSettings.json and verify these properties:

The client searches EOS by default, so ListOnEOS must be enabled for the normal in-game search path. Keeping ListOnSteam enabled as well covers Steam listing features. Changing a flag requires a full server restart.
Do not assume the documented example numbers are the numbers your server uses. Read the actual Port and QueryPort values in the active file and use those exact values in every firewall rule, router rule and connection test. The game port and query port may be different; they are not interchangeable.
4. Open the host firewall and router
Allow the server through the computer’s firewall
Stunlock’s guidance is explicit: for a server to show in the list, both the specified query port and game port must be open in the firewall and forwarded on the router. Create inbound rules for the dedicated-server executable or for the two configured UDP ports. If your firewall asks for a profile, apply the rule to the network profile used by the host.

- Use UDP for the game and query rules where the official documentation specifies UDP.
- Enter the values currently assigned to
PortandQueryPort, not a remembered default. - Target the dedicated-server executable or the server computer, not the Steam client alone.
- Check that a third-party security suite is not silently blocking the same process.
Forward both ports on the router
Give the host computer a stable LAN address, either with a DHCP reservation or a static address, so the forwarding rule does not follow a different device after a reboot. In the router’s port-forwarding page, create one rule for the game port and one for the query port. Set the protocol to UDP where required and set the destination to the host’s LAN address.
Forward the actual values from ServerHostSettings.json. A rule for only the game port can be enough for a player who already knows the address, but it is not enough for reliable public-list discovery. Stunlock states that both the query and game ports must be open and forwarded for the server-list result.
Double-check the network topology if forwarding appears correct but outside players still cannot connect. A second router, mesh gateway or carrier-grade NAT can place the host behind another layer that never receives the inbound packet. In that situation, configure forwarding on the upstream gateway as well, or ask the internet provider whether inbound forwarding is available.
5. Give a new listing time to propagate and search correctly
Stunlock notes that a recently launched server can take a few minutes to appear. Keep the process running during that interval; repeatedly stopping and starting it restarts the wait.

- Launch the server and wait several minutes.
- In V Rising, open Online Play.
- Select Find Servers in the bottom-right corner.
- Choose Display all Servers & Settings.
- Search for the custom server name exactly as configured, or broaden the filters before assuming it is absent.
Give the server a distinctive custom name while troubleshooting. A unique name is easier to find than a default name shared by many entries, and it confirms that the client is reading the intended host-settings file.

6. Connect directly when the browser is missing the server
Direct Connect is the official fallback when the server list has not loaded a private server. It bypasses the browser’s discovery result, so a successful connection demonstrates that the server can be reached even if its listing is delayed or omitted.
- Open Online Play.
- Choose Find Servers at the bottom right.
- Select Display all Servers & Settings.
- Select Direct Connect.
- Enter the hosting dashboard’s public IP address followed by a colon and the configured game
Port, in the formIP:Port. - Connect while the dedicated-server process is running.
Use the public address for friends outside the host’s home network. Players on the same LAN may need the host’s private address, depending on whether the router supports hairpin NAT. Never substitute QueryPort for the game Port in the Direct Connect address.
7. Repair “Unknown Status” and missing local saves
Unknown Status points to a different failure mode from a delayed browser result. Stunlock support says that ServerHostSettings.JSON and/or ServerGameSettings.JSON have most likely become corrupt, with manual editing the common cause. The same corruption can make local saves or server settings appear to be missing.
Restore valid JSON safely
- Stop the server completely.
- Copy the current
ServerHostSettings.jsonandServerGameSettings.jsonto a backup folder. - Undo the most recent manual edit, or replace the damaged file with a known-valid copy from the active settings directory.
- Check that every opening brace and quotation mark has a matching closing character and that entries are separated by commas.
- Start the server and test the status before changing another setting.
Restore one file at a time if you need to identify which file is damaged. Do not paste settings from a different server branch without checking its format. Once the server loads normally, change a single value, save, restart and test again.
If another person’s server shows Unknown Status, the likely explanation is that the owner is not currently hosting. Ask the owner to start the server before treating the status as a client-side configuration problem.

Self-hosting versus managed hosting
Self-hosting gives you control over the executable, settings and world files, but you are responsible for the complete network path: the process must run, the JSON must be valid, the host firewall must allow it, and the router must forward both ports. It is the right fit when you can administer the machine and network.
A managed V Rising server host moves the executable, firewall and router work into a provider dashboard. Stunlock’s hosting guide names managed rental hosting as an alternative and provides dashboard-based controls. You still need to verify the service’s current region, version support, port controls and backup policy before moving a world. Managed hosting reduces home-network troubleshooting; it does not eliminate the need to use valid host settings or the correct connection address.
Configuration habits that prevent the problem returning
- Keep a backup of both JSON files before every update or manual edit.
- Maintain a written record of the current game and query ports, LAN address and launch arguments.
- Use a copied batch file rather than editing the example supplied with the server tool, because updates can replace it.
- Reserve the host’s LAN address so router forwarding does not point at a different device.
- Change one setting at a time and restart the server before evaluating the result.
- Use a distinctive server name and the broadest browser filters while diagnosing discovery.
- Test Direct Connect separately from browser listing; it tells you whether the network path works even when discovery does not.
When the server is fixed
A successful Direct Connect proves reachability, while a visible browser entry proves that registration and discovery are also working. Test both paths after making changes: connect once with the public IP:Port, then restart the client and locate the custom name under Display all Servers & Settings. If either test fails, return to the matching symptom in the table rather than changing unrelated gameplay settings.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can friends join if my V Rising server is not visible in the browser?
Yes. If the server is running and its game port is reachable, friends can use Online Play → Find Servers → Display all Servers & Settings → Direct Connect with the host’s public IP and configured game port. Browser discovery can fail independently.
Which port should I put after the IP address for Direct Connect?
Use the value of Port in the active ServerHostSettings.json. That is the UDP game-traffic port. Do not use QueryPort for Direct Connect.

Why did changing ServerHostSettings.json do nothing?
The server may be loading a different copy. Check the launch command for -persistentDataPath; when present, settings are read from that path’s Settings folder. Otherwise check the normal local-override directory and launch from the installation directory.
What does Unknown Status mean for my own server?
It usually indicates invalid or corrupt ServerHostSettings.JSON or ServerGameSettings.JSON, often after manual editing. Stop the server, restore a valid backup or default, and then make one carefully validated change at a time.
