OpenClaw After Setup: A Practical Next-Step Guide for Your Self-Hosted Agent

After OpenClaw setup, make the Gateway persistent, secure every inbound channel, review the workspace contract, add capabilities gradually, back up your state, and choose hosting based on availability and privacy.

Once OpenClaw is installed, the important work is making it persistent, private, and useful in small, testable steps. First install the Gateway as a background service, verify the Control UI, connect one channel, and lock down who may message it. Then review the workspace files, decide whether heartbeats should run, add capabilities one at a time, create a private backup, and choose a host that matches your availability and maintenance needs.

The current OpenClaw documentation recommends Node 26; Node 24.16 or newer and Node 26.1 or newer are supported. The documentation homepage identifies release v2026.10.3 as current on October 15, 2026. Its “about 5 minutes” setup estimate is a marketing estimate, not an independently measured operating benchmark.

1. Keep the Gateway running after setup

The quick-start flow leaves the Gateway attached to the terminal process. Closing that terminal stops the process, so the first post-setup task is to install the background service.

Install the service

  1. Stop the Gateway process that is currently running in the foreground.
  2. Run openclaw gateway install.
  3. Check the result with openclaw gateway status.

OpenClaw installs the appropriate user-level mechanism for the operating system: a LaunchAgent on macOS, a systemd user unit on Linux or WSL2, or a Scheduled Task on native Windows. This is a per-user service rather than a command you need to leave open in a terminal.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Confirm the basic path

The status output should show the Gateway listening on port 18789, as described in the documentation. Then run openclaw dashboard to open the browser Control UI and send a test message. A successful dashboard exchange confirms that the local Gateway, browser UI, and agent path can communicate; it does not prove that an external channel is secured.

  • If status reports that no service is installed, rerun the install command under the same user account that owns your OpenClaw configuration.
  • If the service is installed but not listening, inspect the status output before changing ports or configuration. A second foreground Gateway can also create a conflict, so stop stray test processes.
  • If the dashboard opens but a message does not complete, solve the local Gateway path before adding a phone or team channel.

2. Connect one channel before adding several

OpenClaw lists channels including Telegram, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp, Signal, iMessage, Google Chat, Microsoft Teams, Matrix, and other plugin channels. Start with one private conversation. Connecting every channel at once makes it difficult to tell whether a failure comes from credentials, permissions, pairing, or the Gateway itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why Telegram is a useful first phone channel

The documentation describes Telegram as the fastest first phone channel because it requires a bot token. Use it as a narrow test: create or select the bot, add its token through the channel setup flow, and message it privately from your own account. Keep the conversation private until pairing and allowlists are confirmed.

When to add another channel

Add Discord, Slack, WhatsApp, Signal, iMessage, Google Chat, Microsoft Teams, Matrix, or a plugin channel only after the first channel works reliably. Each additional service introduces its own account, token, event-delivery, and access-control surface. Record which account owns each credential so a later migration does not depend on memory.

3. Treat every inbound message as untrusted

OpenClaw’s README states: “Treat inbound messages as untrusted input.” A message can be ordinary conversation, an accidental mention, or an attempt to make the agent reveal information or use a tool in an unsafe way. A working chat connection is therefore only a connectivity test, not a security approval.

Use pairing for unknown senders

DM-capable channels pair unknown senders by default. When a new person receives a pairing request, approve it explicitly with:

openclaw pairing approve <channel> <code>

Replace <channel> and <code> with the values shown by OpenClaw. Do not approve a request merely because the sender knows the bot’s name. Verify the identity through a separate trusted route first.

Set channel allowlists before inviting people

Use channel allowlists to define who can start conversations. This is especially important when a channel is attached to a personal account or a workspace with other members. Keep the initial list to your own account, test it, and add people deliberately.

WhatsApp requires an explicit sender list

The official personal-assistant guide gives a specific warning for WhatsApp: “Always set channels.whatsapp.allowFrom (never run open-to-the-world on your personal Mac).” Treat that setting as a prerequisite, not an optional hardening step. Apply the same principle to any other DM-capable channel: pairing and an allowlist should be in place before the bot is discoverable by a broader audience.

Separate dashboard testing from security testing

A successful message in the local Control UI demonstrates that the agent can respond. It says nothing about who can reach a connected channel. Perform a separate access test: confirm your approved account can message the agent, then verify that an unapproved account is refused or left in the pairing flow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Review the workspace contract

The default workspace is ~/.openclaw/workspace. Onboarding or the first agent run creates several instruction and identity files there. These files are operational state, not disposable examples.

File Purpose after setup What to do
AGENTS.md Environment-specific instructions and tool notes. Replace starter text with the rules, paths, and operating conventions that actually apply to your host.
SOUL.md The agent’s behavioral guidance. Read it carefully and remove wording that does not match how you want the agent to operate.
IDENTITY.md Identity information used by the agent. Check names and descriptions before connecting external channels.
USER.md Information about the person the agent serves. Keep only information you are comfortable storing in the workspace.
MEMORY.md Optional long-term memory. It is not auto-created; create and maintain it only if persistent memory is useful.

Read every generated file before relying on it. Starter instructions can be broader than your actual permissions, devices, or privacy expectations. Put machine-specific tool notes in AGENTS.md so the agent has one clear place to learn how your environment works.

5. Decide whether heartbeats should run

Heartbeats let the agent perform recurring checks, but each heartbeat consumes a full agent turn. That means additional model usage and background activity, even when no person is chatting.

The personal-assistant guide recommends starting conservatively. Its evaluation example sets:

agents.defaults.heartbeat.every: "0m"

With that value, you can validate interactive chat, channel controls, and tools before introducing scheduled turns. Enable a cadence only when you can name the task it should perform, the data it may read, and the action it may take. A heartbeat that checks a frequently changing source or invokes tools needs tighter permissions than one that only reports a local status.

  • Begin with heartbeats disabled while the basic path is being tested.
  • Choose a cadence that matches the task rather than the shortest available interval.
  • Watch for unexpected activity or token consumption after enabling them.
  • Disable the cadence again if you cannot explain a run in the agent’s logs or conversation history.

6. Add capabilities in stages

After chat and inbound access controls work, expand OpenClaw one capability at a time. The documented capability areas include skills, plugins, browser and exec tools, cron jobs, hooks, webhooks, automation, and multi-agent routing.

Skills and plugins

Browse the available skills and plugins, then select one that solves a specific task. Read what data and actions it requires before enabling it. Test the smallest useful operation first and remove the capability if its permissions are wider than the task needs.

Browser and exec tools

Browser access can reach external pages, while exec access can affect the host. Enable either only after deciding which directories, accounts, and commands are acceptable. A conversational test is not enough: try a harmless, bounded action and confirm that the result stays within the intended scope.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cron jobs, hooks, and webhooks

These features can trigger work without a person sending a message. Add one scheduled job or event hook, observe when it fires, and document how to disable it. Keep event payloads and credentials out of public channels.

Multi-agent routing

Routing is useful when different workspaces or responsibilities need separation. Create separation for a real boundary—such as distinct projects or permission sets—rather than multiplying agents without a management reason. Give each workspace its own instructions and backup path.

7. Back up the parts that define your agent

Before changing models, channels, plugins, or host machines, make a backup of the OpenClaw configuration, credentials, workspace instructions, memory, and relevant local state. The workspace contains both behavior and context, so backing up only the executable does not preserve the agent you configured.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Use a private repository or equivalent storage

The official documentation recommends treating the workspace as a private Git repository. A private repository gives you history for files such as AGENTS.md, SOUL.md, IDENTITY.md, USER.md, and MEMORY.md. If you use another backup system, apply the same privacy standard.

Credentials deserve stricter handling than ordinary instructions. Keep secrets out of public repositories, shared chat, screenshots, and issue trackers. Test that a backup can actually be restored before making a destructive change.

Prepare for migration

Use the backup and migration commands documented for the OpenClaw release installed on your machine rather than copying an incomplete directory by hand. Record the installed release and the operating system alongside the backup. On a new host, restore the configuration and workspace first, then bring up the Gateway and reconnect channels one at a time.

8. Choose where the Gateway should live

A laptop is the simplest place for a personal assistant. A continuously available setup usually means a home server, such as a Raspberry Pi, or a VPS/cloud host. OpenClaw’s installation documentation describes paths for both, but it does not prescribe a Raspberry Pi model, RAM tier, storage device, provider, or performance guarantee.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Decision axis Home hardware VPS or cloud host
Availability Depends on power, home networking, and whether the device remains on. Designed for remote availability, subject to the host and provider’s service conditions.
Control and privacy The Gateway and its data remain on premises. Provider infrastructure and remote administration become part of the trust boundary.
Maintenance You maintain power, storage, networking, operating-system updates, and the device itself. You maintain the operating system and OpenClaw while the provider maintains the underlying service.
Cost pattern Upfront hardware plus electricity; exact totals depend on the equipment and usage. Recurring hosting charges; the cited OpenClaw documentation does not publish a universal price.
Remote access May require a secure overlay or carefully designed port-forwarding strategy. Remote reachability is part of the design, but still needs authentication and access controls.
Capacity Limited by the selected CPU, memory, storage, and network. Can be resized, but model calls, browser use, media, and plugins still create different resource demands.

When a Raspberry Pi-style home host fits

Choose home hosting when keeping the Gateway on your premises matters and you can provide stable power, storage, networking, and updates. Plan for what happens during a router restart or power outage. The absence of an official sizing table means you should measure your own workload instead of assuming a particular board will handle every model call, browser session, or media task.

When a VPS fits

A VPS is useful when the Gateway must be reachable while your personal computer is off or away from home. It shifts physical maintenance to the provider but adds provider infrastructure and remote administration to your threat model. Lock down administrative access, keep the operating system updated, and apply the same pairing and allowlist rules you would use at home.

Do not confuse reachability with safety

A publicly reachable host is not automatically a publicly usable agent. Keep channel access restricted, avoid open-to-the-world messaging, and expose only the interfaces required for your chosen connection method. OpenClaw’s documentation provides deployment paths, not a guarantee of uptime, latency, security, or performance for any particular host.

9. Verify the installation’s runtime

Check the Node.js version before troubleshooting behavior that may actually be a runtime mismatch. OpenClaw recommends Node 26. The supported versions listed in the current documentation are Node 24.16 or newer and Node 26.1 or newer. Use the version range required by the installed release and keep the runtime consistent when moving between machines.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Record the OpenClaw release, Node version, operating system, workspace location, and enabled channels in your private setup notes. The documentation homepage identifies release v2026.10.3 on October 15, 2026; future releases may change labels or migration steps.

10. Troubleshoot in a useful order

The Gateway stops when the terminal closes

The foreground process is still being used. Stop it, run openclaw gateway install, and verify with openclaw gateway status. Do not treat leaving a terminal window open as a service strategy.

Status is healthy but the dashboard cannot complete a message

Confirm that the dashboard is talking to the same user configuration that owns the installed service. Check that only one Gateway is bound to the expected port and that the service is running under the intended account.

The channel receives messages from the wrong people

Review pairing requests and the channel allowlist before changing prompts or models. For WhatsApp, verify channels.whatsapp.allowFrom specifically. Remove unapproved entries, then repeat the private-account and unapproved-account tests.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The agent performs work without a new message

Inspect heartbeat, cron, hook, and webhook settings. Disable the recently added trigger, then re-enable one feature at a time so you can identify which event caused the activity.

A migration loses behavior or memory

Compare the restored workspace with the backup, including AGENTS.md, identity files, and optional memory. Restore the documented configuration and local state rather than only reinstalling the package. Reconnect channels after the local workspace behaves correctly.

11. A post-setup checklist

  1. Install the background service and confirm the Gateway status.
  2. Open the Control UI and complete a local test message.
  3. Connect one channel, preferably a private Telegram bot conversation for a first phone test.
  4. Approve only verified pairing requests and configure channel allowlists.
  5. For WhatsApp, set channels.whatsapp.allowFrom before broader use.
  6. Read and edit the workspace files in ~/.openclaw/workspace.
  7. Keep heartbeats at "0m" while evaluating unless you have a defined recurring task.
  8. Add skills, plugins, browser or exec tools, and automation individually.
  9. Back up configuration, credentials, workspace instructions, memory, and local state privately.
  10. Choose a laptop, home server, or VPS based on availability, privacy, maintenance, cost pattern, remote access, and workload capacity.
  11. Record the Node version and OpenClaw release so future upgrades are reproducible.
