The exact folder suffix depends on Windows servicing and the installed package. Do not assume that every computer has the same path, version, file size, or hash. Microsoft documents both x86 and x64 builds, so architecture also matters.
Why the error appears
The most likely causes are:
- A printer-driver package is incomplete or corrupted.
- A Windows update did not finish correctly.
- Antivirus software quarantined or removed the component.
- Protected Windows files or the component store are damaged.
- A mismatched x86 or x64 file was installed.
- Disk problems or broader Windows damage affected the Driver Store.
- Malware altered or removed Windows components.
The message can appear while printing, adding or removing a printer, reinstalling a printer, or starting software that happens to invoke Windows printing. Public evidence does not establish a reliable list of specific games or applications that legitimately bundle this file.
Also, “specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named DLL itself is absent. The DLL may exist while a dependency or part of the surrounding printer-driver package is missing.

Fix v3hostingfilter.dll in the safest order
1. Install pending Windows updates
Windows Update is Microsoft’s preferred way to obtain compatible printer drivers and Windows components.
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Open Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if it does not immediately request a restart.
- Try printing or repeat the action that produced the error.
On Windows 10, the page is also available at Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
If the error disappears after the restart, the missing component was probably restored through Windows servicing. If it remains, continue with the printer package repair rather than downloading an individual DLL.
2. Remove and reinstall the affected printer
A broken printer package is the most likely cause.
On Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Choose the affected printer.
- Select Remove and confirm.
- Restart Windows if the printer or print service has been behaving erratically.
- Return to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Complete the printer setup and print a test page.
On Windows 10:
- Open Settings.
- Select Devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the printer.
- Choose Remove device.
- Restart if appropriate.
- Select Add a printer or scanner and reinstall it.
If Windows cannot find a suitable driver, download the package only from the printer manufacturer’s official support page. Select the exact printer model and the correct Windows architecture. Prefer a complete driver package over a lone DLL.

3. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Use these tools when Windows files or the component store may be damaged.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Microsoft recommends DISM before System File Checker. DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies when a valid repair source is available.

Possible SFC results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: no protected-file corruption was detected.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. If Windows Update cannot provide the needed files, DISM may require a matching installation source for the installed Windows build.

4. Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus removal can make a legitimate Windows component appear to be missing.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent entries involving
V3HostingFilter.dll, printer software, or Windows print components. - Expand an entry to inspect its location and action.
Do not restore the file simply because its name looks familiar. Restore it only when its location, digital signature, and source are trustworthy and a current security scan gives no reason for concern. Update Microsoft Defender and run another scan afterward.

5. Use System Restore when the timing is clear
System Restore is useful if the error began immediately after a printer installation, driver update, Windows update, or other system change.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point dated before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore normally does not affect personal files, but it can revert system files, drivers, registry settings, and installed programs. Use it only when the timing gives you a sensible restore point.
Do not copy the DLL manually
Do not download v3hostingfilter.dll from a random DLL website and copy it into:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Do not place it in a game or application folder either.
An isolated DLL may have the wrong architecture, Windows build, or dependencies. The Driver Store package also contains INF metadata, signatures, architecture-specific files, and print-pipeline configuration. Copying one file can leave the package unregistered or create a version mismatch.
There is no verified official Microsoft standalone download or redistributable package for this DLL. Use Windows Update, Windows repair tools, or the printer manufacturer’s official driver installer.

Check architecture and package ownership
Windows has x86 and x64 builds of this component. Do not replace an x64 Windows print component with an x86 DLL, or mix a file from another Windows release because the filename matches.
For an advanced driver inventory:
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run:
pnputil /enum-drivers
- Review published driver names, providers, classes, and versions.
- Identify the printer package before removing anything.
Do not delete an INF package unless its published name and ownership are positively identified. Removing the wrong package can affect other printers or Windows components.
To inspect a suspected file, right-click it, select Properties, and review the Digital Signatures tab. A path inside the Windows Driver Store and a valid Microsoft signature are more meaningful than a filename alone. A different path does not automatically prove malware, but it warrants closer review.
If printing still fails
If Windows Update, printer reinstallation, DISM, SFC, and quarantine checks do not resolve the problem:
- Record the Windows version and build.
- Note whether the system is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Capture the complete error text.
- Record the action that triggers it.
- Note the printer model and driver source.
- Check whether the file exists and where it is located.
- Confirm its digital-signature status.
- Check whether other printers work.
If the printer repeatedly reinstalls the same broken driver, remove it and inspect the Driver Store with pnputil. If system damage extends beyond printing, consider System Restore or an in-place Windows repair after backing up important data. For suspected malware, run a full scan or Microsoft Defender Offline rather than restoring an untrusted DLL.
FAQ
Is v3hostingfilter.dll malware?
It is a legitimate Microsoft Windows print component when it is part of the expected Driver Store package and has a valid signature. A copy in an unusual folder, an invalid signature, or a detection by current security software should be investigated rather than automatically restored.
Is this a game DLL?
There is no verified evidence that a particular game owns or legitimately bundles this file. The file belongs to Windows printer-driver infrastructure. A game may only be involved if it demonstrably installed or invokes printer-related software.
Should I download v3hostingfilter.dll?
