Comfort controls how long your Rested status lasts in Valheim. It is a hidden, location-based score calculated from qualifying furniture and active heat or comfort sources near the spot where you rest. A higher score gives you a longer Rested timer; it does not increase the strength of the Rested bonuses themselves.
For a dependable high-comfort room, use a roofed shelter, keep a heat source burning, place different qualifying comfort items close enough for their effect areas to overlap your bed or resting position, and replace weaker items instead of duplicating items from the same group. Because published duration formulas differ between game-version references, use the Rested timer shown in your own game as the final authority.

What comfort does in Valheim
Comfort is not a character attribute that permanently raises your health, stamina or damage. It is a spatial calculation made when you rest. The game looks at the furniture and active sources around your current resting position, converts the valid sources into a comfort level, and uses that level to determine the duration of the Rested status.
The Rested status is valuable because it improves several recovery and progression systems at once:

Comfort changes the length of this package of bonuses. It does not turn the 50 percent health-regeneration bonus into a larger percentage, and it does not make the stamina, eitr or skill-experience bonuses stronger. The practical goal is therefore to obtain the longest reliable Rested window before a dangerous expedition, long voyage or extended building session.
How the comfort score is calculated
The score is hidden, but its behavior is easy to observe: the game evaluates an invisible area around the place where you are resting. A bed, chair or other usable resting position only receives credit for sources whose effect areas reach that position. A decorated hall can therefore show a different result from a bed at the far end of the same building.
Comfort is local, not global
Furniture does not contribute simply because it exists somewhere in your settlement. If a source is outside the relevant area, it is irrelevant to that resting spot. This is why moving a bed, chair or character a short distance can change the displayed level.

Think of every valid source as projecting an invisible zone. Build and arrange the room so those zones overlap the exact place where you intend to start Rested. The center of a large room may work while a corner bed does not, even though both are under the same roof.
Active sources matter
A source that has an active state must actually be active when the score is checked. A fire that is out or unfueled supplies no active heat effect. A hot tub that has not been heated does not count as an active comfort source. Keeping the objects built is not enough; their operating condition matters.

Requirements for a reliable resting room
Three conditions make a resting setup dependable:
- Roof coverage: Build a roofed shelter around the bed or other resting position. An open-air bed is not a reliable foundation for the resting setup.
- Active heat: Keep a fire or another qualifying heat source burning and supplied. Check it before resting, particularly in an outpost that is not visited often.
- Overlapping comfort sources: Place distinct qualifying furniture and active sources near the resting position so their effect areas reach it.
These are practical requirements rather than a decorative checklist. A room can contain expensive furniture and still produce a short timer if the roof does not cover the position, the heat source is inactive, or the items are too far away.
Step-by-step: build a high-comfort room
- Choose the resting point first. Put the bed or other resting object where you want the character to begin the Rested status. Do not start by filling a large hall and hope every corner receives the same score.
- Enclose the point with a roofed shelter. Walls and a roof create a dependable indoor resting area. Leave enough room to move around the bed and to reach the fuel and furniture you will maintain.
- Install an active heat source. Place a fire or other qualifying heat source close enough for its effect area to reach the resting point. Add fuel and confirm that it is burning before checking comfort.
- Place distinct comfort furniture around the point. Cluster qualifying pieces near the bed, chair or other resting position. The objective is overlap at the resting point, not maximum furniture count across the entire building.
- Use the strongest item in a group. If two pieces belong to the same comfort group, do not assume both add to the score. The documented behavior is that the best item in a group overwrites weaker items. Replace a weaker piece or move it elsewhere instead of filling the room with duplicates.
- Heat a hot tub if you use one. An unheated tub is not an active source. Treat fuel and heat for the tub as part of the room’s upkeep, just as you do for a fire.
- Check the displayed comfort from the intended resting position. Stand at the bed or chair where you will actually start Rested and read the comfort indicator. Testing from the doorway or a different corner can give a misleading result.
- Adjust one variable at a time. Move a source closer, replace a weaker same-group item, refuel a heat source or change the resting point, then check again. This makes it clear which change affected the score.
Furniture groups: why duplicates usually fail
Comfort sources are not an unlimited stacking list. Items in the same group are documented as being overwritten by the best item in that group. Adding several weaker copies can leave the score unchanged, while replacing one with a stronger qualifying item can improve it.

A better upgrade rule
- Keep one qualifying item from a group at the level that gives the best result.
- Use your remaining floor space for a different comfort group rather than another copy of the same type.
- When upgrading, remove or relocate the weaker piece so you can tell whether the replacement is being counted.
- Recheck the score at the resting point after every replacement; an item outside the effect area cannot help, regardless of its theoretical strength.
This rule also prevents a common building mistake: turning a small room into a storage area for duplicate comfort objects that occupy space without extending the timer.
How to verify your actual comfort level and timer
The most useful measurement is the readout at the exact location where the Rested status will start. Walk to the bed, chair or other resting position, allow the game to register the nearby sources, and inspect the comfort value and the resulting Rested duration.
Test the place you will use
If a room contains several beds or resting positions, test each one. A single comfort score should not be assumed for every corner of a large structure. Furniture that reaches one bed may not reach another, and a fire can be close enough to one position while falling outside the effective area of another.

Verify after maintenance changes
Check again after moving a bed, extending a wall, changing the roof, replacing furniture, letting a fire go out or adding a hot tub. Spatial overlap and active states are conditions of the calculation, so construction and upkeep can change the result without any change to the character.
Starter room versus late-game room
A high-comfort build does not have to begin as a huge hall. Early on, a compact roofed room with a burning heat source and a few distinct qualifying sources is easier to keep within overlapping range. Later, you may have access to more furniture and stronger versions, but the same rules still apply.

Why comfort is lower in another room
The bed or chair is outside the source zones
This is the most common explanation. Move the resting position toward the clustered sources or move the sources toward it. Recheck from the new position rather than from the room entrance.
The shelter is not properly roofed
A roof that looks connected from outside may not provide the intended coverage at the resting point. Inspect the roof over the bed or chair and test the comfort readout there after making repairs.

The fire is not active
Fuel can run out while you are away, and an extinguished source contributes no active effect. Refuel it, wait for it to burn, then check again.
The hot tub is cold
A built hot tub does not count merely because it exists. Heat it before using it as part of the comfort arrangement.
The room contains duplicates instead of distinct groups
Several items from one group are generally overwritten by the strongest member. Remove weaker duplicates and use the space for a different qualifying source.
You tested the wrong location
A high reading beside the fireplace does not prove that the bed at the opposite wall receives the same score. Always measure from the location where the Rested status will begin.

What “maximum comfort” really means
Players often ask for a single permanent maximum level or a universal timer chart. The available mechanics references do not support treating one figure as timeless. One current reference describes a seven-minute base Rested duration with each comfort level adding one minute. Another describes eight minutes plus one minute for each comfort level above the first. Those formulas conflict, which indicates that version or documentation differences must be accounted for.

For that reason, do not quote a cap without naming the game version it describes. The dependable method is to maximize the valid sources in overlapping range, activate every heat-based source you intend to use, and read the resulting Rested timer in your own installation.
A version-safe maximization checklist
- Use a roofed resting area.
- Keep the primary heat source burning and fueled.
- Place distinct qualifying furniture close to the resting point.
- Use the strongest available member of each comfort group rather than duplicates.
- Heat any hot tub included in the arrangement.
- Check the score and timer from the exact bed, chair or resting position.
- Record the game version when sharing a duration or maximum with another player.
Using Rested efficiently
Because comfort extends the duration of a broad regeneration and experience buff, a well-maintained room is useful before more than combat. Rest there before leaving for exploration, sailing, mining, construction or any activity that consumes stamina or eitr over time. The longer timer gives you more time to benefit from the same set of bonuses before returning to refresh it.
Outposts deserve particular attention. A remote shelter may have a good layout but no fuel when you arrive. Keep the heat source supplied, make the resting point easy to identify, and test the timer after establishing the outpost. If the outpost has multiple rooms, treat each bed or chair as a separate spatial test rather than assuming the strongest room-wide result applies everywhere.
