There is no official minimum RAM or CPU specification for a Valheim dedicated server. Iron Gate’s dedicated-server guide, dated April 11, 2024, explains installation and operation but does not name a minimum memory size, core count, or processor speed. A Valheim Server Help community FAQ gives 2 vCPU and 4 GB of RAM as an informal consensus starting point for a Linux VPS—not an Iron Gate requirement or a guarantee for every world.
Your practical choice is therefore based on workload and administration. A home Windows or Linux machine gives you control over files, saves and backups but requires setup and possibly router configuration. Rented hosting costs money but can remove much of that maintenance. Crossplay changes the networking decision because its relay avoids router port forwarding for outside connections.

What are the minimum Valheim server requirements?
Iron Gate has not published a RAM or CPU minimum in its dedicated-server documentation. The guide describes launch scripts, networking, save locations and administration, but it does not state a minimum number of gigabytes, CPU cores or processor speed. Treat claims such as “Valheim requires exactly X GB” as unofficial unless they identify a different measured configuration and its conditions.
The only concrete sizing figure in the supplied community material is the Valheim Server Help FAQ’s general consensus of 2 vCPU and 4 GB RAM for a Linux VPS. The FAQ also says no minimum requirements have been published, notes that memory use can increase as a world becomes more complex, and advises watching actual utilization. Its publication year is not stated. Use the figure as a cautious starting point for a small server, not as a supported specification, capacity guarantee or prediction for a particular player count.

| Item | What is established | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| RAM minimum | Not stated by Iron Gate | Size from observed memory use; 4 GB is an informal community starting point for a Linux VPS. |
| CPU minimum | Not stated by Iron Gate | Two vCPU is community guidance, not a required core count or clock speed. |
| Operating systems | Official Windows and Linux launch scripts | Use a supported Windows or Linux installation, or a compatible container environment. |
| Default Steam-backend ports | Configured port and port+1; default range 2456–2457 | Forward the selected ports when the Steam backend needs outside access. |
| Crossplay networking | Relay server used | Outside players do not require router port forwarding, but local or loopback IP joining is not supported in Crossplay mode. |
How much RAM and CPU should you plan for?
Start with the community baseline, then measure
For a Linux VPS, 2 vCPU and 4 GB RAM is a reasonable first configuration when you have no utilization history. It is not evidence that every world, mod set or concurrent session will fit. Leave operating-system headroom rather than allocating every available megabyte to the game process. If the machine begins swapping, the server stalls, or memory remains near capacity while the world is active, increase RAM and investigate the workload.
CPU pressure and memory pressure are different failure modes. A server can have spare RAM but still suffer from sustained CPU saturation, or have an adequate processor while running out of memory as the save becomes more complex. Monitor both rather than upgrading only the component named in an online “minimum.” No benchmark study or official player-count-to-hardware chart establishes a universal mapping.
World complexity matters
The community FAQ specifically warns that resource use can rise as the world becomes more complex. New exploration, structures, creatures, dropped items and other persistent state can change the workload over time. A configuration that appears comfortable immediately after creating a world can become marginal later. Record utilization during normal play and during the busiest activity your group creates, then size for that observed peak with safety margin.

Storage and network considerations
The official documentation focuses on server software and save management rather than a fixed disk quota or bandwidth number. Use reliable local storage with room for the world, logs and multiple backups. A wired connection is preferable for a home host, particularly if the same connection serves other demanding traffic. For a rented instance, check the provider’s storage type, transfer policy and access to system metrics before committing; provider performance and pricing are not established by Iron Gate’s guide.
Home hosting or rented hosting?
Both models can run the same dedicated-server software. The important differences are administration, network exposure, control and recurring cost—not an officially different hardware requirement.

| Decision factor | Home Windows/Linux machine | Rented VPS or managed game host |
|---|---|---|
| Initial setup | Install the Steam tool, edit a launch script and maintain the operating system. | Provider supplies an instance or game-server panel; you still need to configure the server and saves according to its interface. |
| Router work | Steam backend may require forwarding the selected port and port+1. Crossplay avoids this for outside access. | Usually no home-router change, but provider firewall rules and allocated ports may apply. |
| Control | Direct access to scripts, save files, backups and operating-system settings. | Control depends on the plan; managed services may restrict system access. |
| Cost pattern | Uses existing hardware plus electricity and your time. | Recurring rental charge; exact prices, uptime and performance vary by provider and are not specified here. |
| Scaling | Upgrade or replace hardware yourself. | Often resize the instance, subject to the provider’s offerings. |
| Maintenance | You handle updates, backups, security and recovery. | The provider handles infrastructure; you remain responsible for the game configuration and the backups the plan does not include. |
If you would rather skip router forwarding and operating-system upkeep, Godlike.Host offers Valheim server hosting with its own game panel, up to three free backups a day with restore, free DDoS protection and plan upgrades or downgrades from the panel; see the current plans for what fits your group.
A small always-on Windows or Linux mini PC can be a practical home-host category, but it is not automatically suitable. Verify the chosen model’s operating-system support, installed memory, storage endurance and wired-network options. The 4 GB community figure is a heuristic, so do not buy a machine with no upgrade or headroom solely because an online post names 4 GB.
Networking: Steam backend versus Crossplay
Steam backend
Iron Gate documents a default port range of 2456–2457. The server uses the configured port and the next port number. If you select a different base port, forward that port and its successor rather than blindly forwarding the defaults. Your router’s forwarding rule must point to the host machine’s local address, and any host firewall must allow the same traffic.
Port forwarding exposes a service from your home network, so reserve a stable local address for the server and remove rules you no longer use. The exact router labels differ by manufacturer; the relevant values are the server’s configured port, port+1 and the host’s local IP.
Crossplay
Launching with -crossplay sends server data through a relay. Iron Gate says this means port forwarding is not required to make the server accessible outside your local network. Players can join using a public IP and port, a join code or the server list, depending on the available client flow.

Crossplay has an important limitation: Iron Gate says a Crossplay server cannot be joined with a local or loopback IP in that mode. A player on the same network should use the supported public, code or listing method rather than assuming 127.0.0.1 or a private address will work. Xbox consoles can join a dedicated server when Crossplay is enabled, but an Xbox console cannot host a dedicated server.
Supported software and documented dependencies
Windows
The official package includes start_headless_server.bat. Iron Gate recommends editing a copy of the launch script because updates can reset the original. Put your server name, world name, password, port and any options in the working copy, then start that copy so an update does not erase your configuration.
Linux
Linux uses ./start_server.sh. Iron Gate lists these package dependencies: libatomic1, libpulse-dev and libpulse0. Install the versions available for your distribution, then test the script interactively before arranging automatic startup. Distribution package names and service managers vary, so a package command copied from one Linux release may not apply unchanged to another.
Docker
Iron Gate documents Docker as an alternative when a Linux installation has older libraries. The guide lists minimum library versions of GLIBC_2.29 and GLIBCXX_3.4.26. Check those compatibility requirements in the image and host documentation before deployment, and make sure the container’s save directory is mapped to persistent storage. A container that is recreated without a persistent save volume can appear to lose the world even though the game process started successfully.
Setting up a dedicated server
- Install the dedicated-server tool. In the Steam client, open Library, switch the library filter to Tools, and install the Valheim dedicated server tool.
- Copy the launch script. On Windows, copy
start_headless_server.bat; on Linux, make a working copy ofstart_server.sh. Edit the copy so later updates do not overwrite your settings. - Choose identity and access settings. Set the server name, world/save name, password and port in the script. Use a password that is not reused elsewhere.
- Choose a save location. Use the documented default location for your operating system, or set
-savedirto a directory on storage that is backed up and has adequate free space. - Select the backend. Use the Steam backend when you are prepared to configure its port and port+1. Add
-crossplaywhen relay-based outside access and cross-platform joining are more important than local-IP joining. - Install prerequisites and launch. On Linux, install the three documented libraries first. Start the copied script and wait for the server to finish initialization before attempting to join.
- Test the actual join path. Test from the same network and from an outside connection using the method your backend supports. For Crossplay, do not use a local or loopback IP.
- Document the configuration. Record the script options, save path, port, backend and administrator settings in a secure place so another person can recover the server.
Saves, backups and administration
A dedicated server is persistent only if its save data survives process failures and hardware problems. Iron Gate documents a configurable save directory, save intervals and automatic backup settings. Choose a backup interval that matches how much progress your group can afford to lose, and keep copies outside the live save directory so a corrupted or deleted world does not destroy every copy.

The guide also covers administrator, banned and permitted lists. Treat those files as part of the server configuration and include them in your backup routine. Before maintenance, stop the process with Ctrl+C. Iron Gate warns that closing the command window may leave the server running in the background; an apparently closed window is therefore not proof that the process stopped cleanly.
Monitoring and upgrading
Check RAM consumption, CPU utilization, swap activity, storage space and process health while players are active. Compare quiet periods with the busiest sessions rather than relying on an idle reading. If RAM is consistently near its limit or swap is growing, add memory. If one or more vCPU threads remain saturated while memory is comfortable, move to a stronger CPU allocation. If both are comfortable but players cannot connect, investigate ports, firewall rules, backend choice and relay behavior before buying hardware.
After every upgrade or configuration change, test a real join, confirm that the expected world loads, and verify that a new backup is being created. Keep a rollback copy of the previous script and save configuration so an unsuccessful change can be reversed.
Common problems and their fixes
- Players outside the home cannot connect on Steam backend: confirm the selected port and port+1, forward them to the correct local address, allow them through the host firewall, and check that the server is actually listening on the configured port.
- A Crossplay player tries a private or loopback address: use the public-IP-and-port method, join code or server list instead; local or loopback IP joining is not supported in Crossplay mode.
- The server starts but uses excessive memory: record utilization during active play, account for world complexity and increase capacity if the observed workload leaves no headroom.
- Linux reports missing libraries: install
libatomic1,libpulse-devandlibpulse0for the distribution, then relaunch and inspect the startup output. - Docker fails on an older host: verify
GLIBC_2.29andGLIBCXX_3.4.26compatibility, or use a compatible image/host combination. - Configuration disappears after an update: edit and run a copied launch script rather than the original file supplied by the tool.
- A world appears to have vanished: check the active
-savedir, confirm that the container or service mounts persistent storage, and restore the newest known-good backup. - The process remains after closing the window: stop it with
Ctrl+Cand check the operating system’s process list before starting a second instance.
A practical sizing and hosting decision
- Choose the operating system you can patch, monitor and recover confidently.
- Use 2 vCPU and 4 GB RAM only as the community’s Linux-VPS starting heuristic, not as an official minimum.
- Leave memory and CPU headroom, then measure during the busiest real sessions.
- Choose Steam backend plus router forwarding when local-IP access and direct networking are important.
- Choose Crossplay when relay-based outside access and cross-platform joining outweigh the limitation on local or loopback IP joins.
- Prefer home hosting when file control and one-time hardware use justify your maintenance time; prefer rented hosting when avoiding router and infrastructure administration is worth a recurring fee.
- Before inviting players, test joining, save creation, automatic backups, administrator access and a clean shutdown.
Iron Gate’s own description is concise: “Running a dedicated server is a great way to provide a persistent world in which you and your friends can play anytime.” The persistence comes from correct save handling and maintenance as much as from CPU or RAM. Since no official hardware minimum exists, a measured, monitored setup is more trustworthy than a precise number detached from your world and hosting model.
