Dedicated, community, and crossplay are not three competing server products. They describe three different choices: whether a separate process keeps the world online, whether that world appears in Valheim’s browser, and which networking backend players use. A dedicated server can be community-visible and crossplay-enabled at the same time.

The three labels answer different questions

Valheim’s terminology is confusing because the labels are often presented as if they were mutually exclusive. They are not. Use this model:

Label What it describes What it changes
Dedicated How the world is hosted A separate Valheim server process runs independently of a player’s game session, so the world can stay available when no one is playing.
Community How the world is discovered The -public setting controls whether a hosted world or server appears in Valheim’s browser.
Crossplay Which network backend is used The -crossplay argument selects PlayFab, allowing players from supported platforms to join; without it, the Steam backend is used.

That means a server could be all three: a dedicated process, listed publicly with -public 1, and reachable by Xbox and Microsoft Store players with -crossplay. Conversely, a player-hosted world can be hidden with -public 0, and a dedicated server can use the Steam backend instead of crossplay.

What a dedicated Valheim server is

A dedicated server is a standalone Valheim server program running on a computer or hosted service. It does not depend on the game client of the person who originally created the world. Iron Gate Studio describes the purpose directly: “Running a dedicated server is a great way to provide a persistent world in which you and your friends can play anytime.” The statement appears in Iron Gate’s official dedicated-server guide dated April 11, 2024.

Why persistence matters

With a dedicated process, one player does not have to launch Valheim and remain connected for everyone else to enter. The machine running the process must still be powered on, connected, and maintained, but the world itself is not tied to a player’s current session. This suits groups with different schedules, because players can build, explore, or prepare resources without waiting for the usual host.

Where the program comes from

Iron Gate distributes the dedicated-server program through Steam’s Tools library. Installation and operation require some scripting knowledge. Depending on the network, you may also need to configure a router and firewall so traffic can reach the server and return to clients.

Important launch arguments

The server is normally started with a script or command containing arguments such as these:

  • -name sets the name shown in the server browser.
  • -world selects an existing world or creates a new one with that name.
  • -password sets the password players must enter.
  • -public 1 lists the server in the browser; -public 0 hides it for local or direct joining.
  • -port 2456 chooses the server’s port. The default arrangement uses ports 2456 and 2457.
  • -backups, -backupshort, and -backuplong control automatic backup behavior.
  • -crossplay selects the PlayFab crossplay backend instead of the Steam backend.

A typical command therefore combines the choices rather than selecting a single “server type,” for example: -name "Meadows Group" -world "meadows_world" -password "use-a-strong-password" -public 0 -port 2456 -backups 4 -backupshort 7200 -backuplong 43200 -crossplay. Use the exact syntax supplied with the current dedicated-server package and keep the password out of public posts.

What “community server” means

In official Valheim documentation, “community” is primarily a visibility setting, not a separate executable. A hosted world or dedicated process becomes visible in the in-game browser when -public 1 is used. With -public 0, it is hidden and players must join by a direct method supported by that backend, such as a local connection or an address supplied by the operator.

Session hosting for a small group

The simplest arrangement is to open a world from the game, enable server visibility, and invite the group. This is often enough when the same person usually starts the game and everyone plays together. It avoids installing and maintaining the separate server tool.

The availability trade-off

A session-hosted world exists only while the host’s game session is active. If that player closes Valheim or loses the connection, other players cannot continue until the world is hosted again. Making the session “community” visible changes discovery, not this availability rule. An always-available world requires a dedicated process or a managed service.

How crossplay changes connections

Crossplay is a backend selection. Iron Gate’s guide defines -crossplay as: “Runs the Server on the Crossplay backend (PlayFab), which lets users from any platform join.” If the argument is omitted, the server uses the Steam backend, where only Steam users can see and join it.

Which groups need it

Crossplay matters when a group combines Steam, Microsoft Store or PC Game Pass, and Xbox players. A Steam-only group can use the default Steam backend, provided every participant owns a compatible PC version and can see the server through that backend.

Xbox limitations and access

Xbox consoles cannot run a dedicated Valheim server. Iron Gate’s FAQ states: “You can’t set up a dedicated server on an Xbox console. However, you can join a dedicated server from an Xbox console just as normal, provided that both your Xbox and the server have crossplay enabled.” In practice, the dedicated process must run on a PC or hosted service, and the Xbox client must connect through the crossplay backend.

How players join a crossplay server

Iron Gate documents three connection methods for a crossplay server:

  • Choose the server from Valheim’s server list when it is publicly listed.
  • Enter the public IP address and port supplied by the operator.
  • Use the server’s join code.

Crossplay connections do not support a local IP address or the loopback address. A player sitting on the same home network should still use a supported crossplay method rather than entering an internal address.

Dedicated, session-hosted, and crossplay options compared

Decision axis Session-hosted world Dedicated Steam-backend server Dedicated crossplay server
World persistence Available while the host’s game session is running. Can remain online independently of players, if the server machine stays available. Can remain online independently of players, if the server machine or service stays available.
Discoverability Controlled by the hosted world’s visibility setting. -public 1 lists it; -public 0 hides it. Also controlled by -public 1 or -public 0.
Platform access Depends on the backend selected by the host. Steam users only can see and join through the Steam backend. Uses PlayFab so supported Steam, Microsoft Store/Game Pass, and Xbox players can join.
Router work Depends on how the host’s session is reached. May require router port forwarding and firewall rules. Iron Gate says port forwarding is not required, although the configured port still identifies a server when multiple servers share one public IP.
Operational burden Lowest: start the game and host. Install the Tools package, maintain scripts, updates, backups, firewall, and machine uptime. The same dedicated-server work, plus crossplay compatibility checks.

Which arrangement fits your group?

Choose session hosting when simplicity comes first

  • The group usually plays at the same time.
  • One person is comfortable starting the world each session.
  • No one needs to enter while the usual host is away.
  • You want to avoid server scripts, updates, and network administration.

Choose a self-hosted dedicated server for flexible schedules

  • Players need to enter at different times.
  • Someone can leave a PC or Linux machine available whenever the world should be reachable.
  • The group can handle updates, backups, firewall rules, and world-file maintenance.
  • You want control over the world, launch arguments, and access policy.

Choose a crossplay-enabled dedicated server for mixed platforms

Use the dedicated process with -crossplay when Xbox or Microsoft Store players must join a PC-hosted world. Confirm that every client and the server run compatible versions before troubleshooting network settings. Crossplay solves the platform-backend mismatch; it does not remove the need to maintain the server process itself.

Consider managed hosting when uptime is the priority

A managed Valheim service can provide an always-on machine, control panel, and scheduled backups without requiring your group to maintain a home server. Before paying, verify the provider’s current crossplay support, mod policy, backup retention, server region, uptime terms, and pricing. Those details vary by provider and can change independently of Valheim’s own software.

Setting up a dedicated server: a practical sequence

  1. Install the server tool. In Steam, open Library, change the library filter to Tools, and install Valheim’s dedicated-server package.
  2. Create or select the world. Decide whether -world should point to an existing world or a new name. Keep a separate record of the world name so you can restore the same world after an update.
  3. Write the launch script. Add -name, -world, -password, -public, and -port. Add -crossplay if any player uses Xbox or the Microsoft Store/Game Pass version.
  4. Set visibility deliberately. Use -public 1 if players should find the server in the browser. Use -public 0 when you want an unlisted server and will distribute joining details privately.
  5. Configure backups. Set the documented -backups, -backupshort, and -backuplong options, and periodically confirm that backup files are being created on storage that will survive a disk failure.
  6. Start the process and read its console output. Confirm that the selected world loads without errors and note the address, port, or join code that players should use.
  7. Test with each platform. Have a Steam player test a Steam-backend server. For crossplay, test at least one non-Steam client and use a join code, public address and port, or the server list rather than a local IP.
  8. Document recovery. Record the script, world name, password change procedure, backup location, and update steps so another trusted administrator can restart the world.

Ports, forwarding, and firewall decisions

For a non-crossplay dedicated server using the Steam backend, the official guide warns that network configuration may include allowing traffic through the router and firewall. The default port arrangement uses 2456 and 2457; changing the configured port is useful when more than one server must share an address, but every player must then use the new value.

With -crossplay, Iron Gate says router port forwarding is not required because PlayFab handles the cross-platform connection path. The port still distinguishes separate servers sharing one public IP. Do not infer that crossplay makes every local-network method valid: local-IP and loopback connections are specifically unsupported for crossplay connections.

Visibility and access control

Public listing and password protection solve different problems. -public 1 improves discoverability but exposes the server name in the browser. -public 0 reduces casual discovery, yet anyone who obtains the joining details may still attempt to connect. Keep a strong password, share it only with the intended group, and change it if it is posted publicly.

For a private group, an unlisted server plus a password is usually the clearest policy. For a community that wants new players to find the world, list it publicly and make the server name, rules, and password policy explicit outside the game.

Maintenance that keeps a persistent world safe

  • Updates: Apply Valheim and dedicated-server updates deliberately, then verify that clients and the server are on compatible versions.
  • Backups: Use the built-in backup arguments and keep copies separate from the live world so a damaged save or failed disk does not remove every recovery point.
  • Availability: A dedicated server is only persistent while its host machine or managed service is powered, connected, and running the process.
  • Administration: Restrict operating-system access, protect the launch script because it contains the password, and give restart or update access only to trusted administrators.
  • Mods: If the group uses mods, check that the server and every client use compatible mod versions; crossplay platform support does not guarantee mod compatibility.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The server does not appear in the browser

  • Check whether the launch script uses -public 1.
  • Confirm that the server process finished loading the intended world.
  • Verify that players are looking through the correct backend. A server without -crossplay uses Steam and will not be visible to Xbox clients.
  • For a hidden server, stop searching the browser and use the supported direct method for that backend.

Steam players can join, but Xbox cannot

The usual cause is a backend mismatch. Add -crossplay to the dedicated-server launch arguments, restart the process, and have Xbox players join with the server list, public address and port, or join code. Ensure the Xbox and server versions are compatible.

A crossplay player is trying a local address

That method is not supported for crossplay. Supply a join code or the public address and configured port, or use the server list if the server is public.

Players lose access when the usual host quits

That behavior indicates session hosting, not an always-on dedicated process. Move the world to the dedicated-server tool or a managed service, then configure the world name, password, visibility, backups, and platform backend deliberately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Two servers conflict on one connection

Assign different configured ports and give players the matching port for each server. Crossplay still avoids router forwarding, but the port remains the identifier that separates servers sharing one public IP.

Bottom line

Pick the hosting model first: a session-hosted world is simplest but ends with the host’s game, while a dedicated process keeps the world available independently. Set visibility separately with -public 1 or -public 0. Finally, choose the backend: omit -crossplay for Steam-only access, or add it when Xbox and Microsoft Store/Game Pass players must join. Treat backups, updates, passwords, and machine uptime as part of running the server, not optional extras.
