Choose Valheim first for exploration, Enshrouded for building and movement, or RuneScape: Dragonwilds for demanding survival systems and RuneScape-style skills. None is universally best. Their worlds, death penalties, multiplayer sizes and survival rules are different enough that your preferred loop matters more than a review score.
All three are in their 1.0 era according to current Steam store metadata: Valheim lists 9 September 2026, RuneScape: Dragonwilds lists 15 September 2026, and Enshrouded lists 15 October 2026. Store release status, supported platforms and requirements can change, so check the current listing before buying.

The short decision
| If you care most about… | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Unpredictable voyages and discovery | Valheim | Its procedurally generated afterlife, sailing and biome progression make every expedition different. |
| Construction, terraforming and traversal | Enshrouded | Voxel building, terrain editing, settlements, gliding and grappling create the broadest building toolkit. |
| Hunger, thirst, sleep and character skills | RuneScape: Dragonwilds | Its default survival pressure is the most traditional, while RuneScape skills and practical magic add a distinct progression layer. |
How the three games actually differ
PC Gamer’s 15 October 2026 comparison identifies the clearest mechanical split. Valheim is a procedural Viking-inspired afterlife; Dragonwilds takes place on the hand-crafted continent of Ashenfall in Gielinor; Enshrouded uses the hand-crafted Embervale and lets you reshape it with voxel terraforming.
| Decision axis | Valheim | RuneScape: Dragonwilds | Enshrouded |
|---|---|---|---|
| World | Procedurally generated afterlife inspired by Viking culture | Hand-crafted Ashenfall in Gielinor | Hand-crafted Embervale with voxel terraforming |
| Multiplayer | Solo or 1–10 players | Solo or teams of four | Solo or co-op for up to 16 players |
| Survival pressure | No thirst or starvation; food buffs matter | Thirst and starvation enabled by default; sleep required | Food buffs and survival systems are adjustable and were disabled by default in PC Gamer’s comparison |
| Death | Skill XP loss and gravestone inventory recovery | No XP loss and gravestone inventory recovery | No XP loss and gravestone inventory recovery |
| Building | Structural-integrity and weight-bearing construction | Structural integrity and storage crafting | Voxel construction, terraforming, furniture and NPC settlements |
| Fast travel | Player-crafted portals with item limits | Player-crafted portals using runes | Unlockable fast-travel points plus limited player-crafted bases |
| Listed PC minimum | 8 GB RAM; 1 GB storage | 8 GB RAM; 25 GB storage | 16 GB RAM; 60 GB storage |
Why Valheim is the best first game for explorers
Valheim’s procedural world is the strongest reason to begin here. PC Gamer placed it first in its “There and back again” exploration category because the map generation makes routes, coastlines and returns less predictable. Sailing between biomes, preparing for regional bosses and bringing resources home creates a clear expedition rhythm without requiring hunger or thirst management.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Food still matters, but primarily through buffs rather than starvation. The trade-off is a harsher death consequence: you lose skill XP and must recover your inventory from a gravestone. Construction uses structural integrity and weight-bearing rules, so a large hall needs engineering rather than simply placing unlimited blocks.
Valheim supports solo play and groups of up to 10. It also has the lightest listed PC footprint here—8 GB of memory and 1 GB of storage—making it the easiest fit for a modest gaming PC. Steam’s access-date snapshot recorded 94% positive English-language reviews from 266,223 reviews; that figure is volatile and should not be treated as a permanent score.

Why Enshrouded is the building and movement specialist
Start with Enshrouded if your main goal is to shape a home, settlement or landscape. PC Gamer ranked it first for building, highlighting blocks in many shapes, furniture, terraforming, NPC villagers and tools that help manage building decay. Keen Games presents Embervale as a light survival action RPG, and the voxel terrain lets construction extend beyond pre-existing foundations.

The action layer is unusually mobile for this group. The Steam listing advertises a deep skill tree, grappling hooks, gliding and underwater exploration alongside solo or co-op play for up to 16 people. Fast travel comes from unlockable points, while player-built bases remain more limited than in a game built entirely around portals.
Survival settings are less prescriptive than Dragonwilds. In PC Gamer’s comparison, food buffs and survival systems were adjustable and disabled by default, so players can emphasize combat and construction instead of maintaining constant needs. Death returns your inventory through a gravestone without XP loss.
The cost of that visual and systemic breadth is hardware: the listed minimum is 16 GB of RAM and 60 GB of storage. Steam’s access-date snapshot showed 87% positive English-language reviews from 49,941 reviews, another time-sensitive figure.

Why RuneScape: Dragonwilds suits survival traditionalists
Dragonwilds is the first choice when survival itself should create pressure. Thirst and starvation are enabled by default, and sleep is required, which is why PC Gamer ranked it first for the traditional “do this or else” survival category. You must plan food, water and rest rather than treating them as optional buffs.
Its hand-crafted Ashenfall is also designed around RuneScape progression. Jagex describes skill leveling, potions, craftable equipment, dragons and magic with practical uses: spells can fell trees or break ore instead of serving only as combat attacks. That combination makes gathering and character development feel like linked skills rather than separate menus.
Dragonwilds supports solo play or four-player co-op. Death does not remove XP, but your belongings return through a gravestone. Player-crafted portals consume runes, adding a resource decision to fast travel. The listed PC minimum is 8 GB of RAM and 25 GB of storage.

Jagex reported more than one million early-access sales in 2026. Its executive producer Jesse America said updates were shaped by player feedback. Steam’s access-date snapshot recorded 81% positive English-language reviews from 25,763 reviews; both the sales claim and review percentage describe a specific point in time, not a guarantee of future reception.

For a large co-op group
Enshrouded is the only one of the three listed for groups of up to 16. Valheim’s 1–10 range fits a medium-sized server, while Dragonwilds is deliberately smaller at four players. Confirm the current multiplayer limits in the store listings because online support can change after launch.
For a lower-spec PC
Valheim has the smallest listed requirements at 8 GB RAM and 1 GB storage. Dragonwilds keeps the same memory minimum but needs 25 GB. Enshrouded’s 16 GB RAM and 60 GB storage minimum make it the least forgiving choice for older systems.

For players who dislike losing progress
Dragonwilds and Enshrouded avoid XP loss on death, although both still require a gravestone recovery trip. Valheim additionally removes skill XP, so choose it only if that setback is acceptable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

All three have active Steam listings. A physical PlayStation 5 or Xbox edition of RuneScape: Dragonwilds has been announced; Jagex’s preorder notice says those editions include a physical disc. Retail stock and regional availability are not established here, so verify both before ordering. Digital prices, review totals, promotions and platform support are volatile and should be checked at the time of purchase.
Final recommendation
Make Valheim your first download if the fantasy of leaving a base, crossing an unknown sea and returning with a story is what sells you. Choose Enshrouded if building creativity and agile action matter more than survival austerity. Choose RuneScape: Dragonwilds if you want hunger, thirst, sleep, skills and useful magic to shape every expedition. Those priorities produce a more reliable choice than treating the three games as interchangeable survival sandboxes.
