Required order
- Complete the rescue of Louis.
- Travel back to the Abandoned Church.
- Speak with James after the rescue.
- Continue the conversation until the interaction is fully exhausted.

Approaching James before Louis is rescued does not satisfy the condition described by the walkthrough. Likewise, merely passing near him is not the same as selecting the conversation that awards the item.
Step 1: verify that Louis’s rescue is actually complete
The Louis rescue is the prerequisite for James’s handoff. If the objective is still active, the game may allow you to return to the church without advancing the key state.
Checks to make
- Confirm that the rescue sequence itself has finished rather than stopping after reaching Louis or opening his immediate route.
- Check the current objective or chapter status for wording that indicates Louis has been rescued, if your platform displays that status.
- Make sure you did not reload a checkpoint from before the rescue after completing it. A checkpoint reload can put the game back into an earlier quest state.
- If the game permits free movement after the rescue, leave the rescue area normally before returning to the church so the completion state can register.
Do not treat the presence of Louis’s location, a completed combat encounter, or access to the surrounding area as proof that the game has recorded the rescue. The relevant test is whether the rescue objective has completed in the current save state.

James at the Abandoned Church is the documented source of the Cave Grotto Key. Interact with him after Louis’s rescue and select every available continuation. Stop only when the conversation ends and no further dialogue option is offered.
If James appears to have nothing new to say
- Move away from James, approach again, and interact with him rather than relying on an automatic proximity trigger.
- Continue through every dialogue exchange. The key is awarded through the conversation, not by picking up a visible object beside him.
- After the final line, check whether the game has advanced the objective or added a key item, if the current interface exposes either confirmation.
- If the dialogue repeats an earlier line, note the exact wording. That observation is useful when deciding whether the Louis state or the checkpoint state failed to update.
There is no published instruction that James must be approached from a particular direction, spoken to at a particular time of day, or visited with a special equipment loadout. Avoid inventing extra conditions; concentrate on the rescue state and the complete interaction.

Confirm that you are checking the correct door

Keep the game updated, but do not assume a patch fixed this item
Current Valor Mortis guides mention patches that addressed several demo progression and loading problems. Those reports do not identify a Cave Grotto Key-specific correction. James was approached but the dialogue was not completed
The award is attached to speaking with James after the rescue. Ending the interaction early can leave the handoff unresolved. Reopen the conversation and exhaust it.
The church was visited before the prerequisite
If you spoke with James too early, the earlier conversation does not substitute for the post-rescue trigger. Return after Louis’s rescue and interact with James again.
The wrong entrance was tested
The relevant destination is the door in the cliffs across the grapple point. Another locked door can remain inaccessible even when the Cave Grotto Key is present.
A checkpoint restored an earlier state
Reloading is only helpful when the selected checkpoint contains the completed rescue. An older checkpoint can make a correct handoff appear to have disappeared.

What not to do
- Do not edit save files or use unofficial console commands. No published source confirms a safe key-specific edit or command.
- Do not delete the save as a first response. The key is reported as non-missable, and earlier areas can reportedly be revisited.
- Do not assume a random world-item spawn will eventually produce the key. The documented method is a James conversation after Louis’s rescue.
