Valor Mortis is a first-person Soulslike set in a grotesque alternate-history version of Napoleonic Europe. Its mix of stamina-based combat, parries, firearms and supernatural abilities could appeal to players who want a different view of the genre—but the best independent hands-on account available before launch warned that uneven difficulty made some bosses frustrating. That is a pre-release concern, not a verdict on the final game.
What is Valor Mortis?
Developed by One More Level, the studio behind Ghostrunner, Valor Mortis casts players as William Dowsett, a resurrected soldier of Napoleon’s Grande Armée. Napoleon’s disembodied voice guides William through an alternate-history 19th-century Europe overrun by grotesque, plague-linked horrors. The official premise also promises supernatural powers and a conspiracy threatening humanity. One More Level’s developer interview with Unreal Engine and the publisher’s launch announcement describe the setting and story.

Is Valor Mortis a first-person Soulslike?
Yes. The game is presented as a first-person action Soulslike, not a conventional third-person Soulslike with a confirmed camera toggle. Its first-person view is part of the announced design; the available official information does not establish that players can switch perspectives.

The publisher also describes interconnected, Metroidvania-style exploration. These are announced mechanics, not independently tested conclusions. In its gameplay overview, the publisher says weapon choice matters: a Claymore delivers slower, high-impact two-handed attacks, while a Musket offers greater range and power than William’s pistol but takes up both hands.

How hard is Valor Mortis?
The clearest independent evidence is a pre-release hands-on preview, and it raises a specific warning about difficulty balance. In a September 21, 2026 Game Informer preview, Wesley LeBlanc said he enjoyed much of what he played, but found the balance “incredibly uneven,” with chapter-ending boss fights spoiling what should have been climactic encounters. He later described the balance as having “no rhyme or reason” and called the experience often frustrating, while adding that the game had the “Soulslike juice.”
That assessment concerns a pre-release build, not the final launch version. The developer’s Steam announcements provide relevant context: the team said it was working on combat readability, hitbox range, enemy staggering, boss variety and the difficulty curve, among other areas. It also cautioned that its demo’s Chapter I and Chapter VII versions were bespoke event builds and no longer representative of full-game polish. A boss encountered after roughly 30 minutes in the demo was intended to appear at the end of Chapter II in the full game. Those statements describe development work, not proof that the launch version has resolved the preview’s concerns.

What “strangely chill” can mean here
“Chill” is not an established player consensus or a claim that the game is easy. It can describe the appeal of a deliberate, focused loop: explore, read an enemy, manage stamina and try again. Whether that feels absorbing or stressful will depend on your appetite for demanding combat—and, in particular, on how the final game handles its bosses.

Who should keep an eye on Valor Mortis?
Valor Mortis has a clear pitch for players curious about bringing Soulslike combat into first person, especially those drawn to Napoleonic horror, supernatural abilities and interconnected exploration. The main caution is not a settled claim about the game’s final difficulty: it is a named previewer’s report of uneven balance and frustrating chapter-ending bosses in a pre-release build. If boss friction is a deal-breaker, wait for launch-version impressions; if the premise and first-person approach are the draw, the announced design gives you concrete reasons to follow it.
