VALORANT Update Stuck at 45%? 6 Safe Troubleshooting Steps

Riot has no published fix specifically for VALORANT updates stuck at 45%. Start with service status, client and storage checks, then use Riot’s limited Avast/AVG workaround or general network and installation guidance as appropriate.

If your VALORANT update appears stuck at 45%, Riot has not published a fix specifically for that progress mark. Its update-specific guidance addresses a different symptom—“0% Download”—and identifies Avast or AVG as a possible cause in that case. Work through the checks below from least disruptive to most involved; treat the 0% workaround as limited to the products and symptom Riot names.

1. Check Riot service status and whether the update is actually stalled

Check Riot’s service-status page for current notices before changing settings. A server-side incident may explain why an update is not completing, but the page is live and can change; a past status snapshot does not establish the current situation.

A progress label that has not changed is not, by itself, proof that the client has stopped working. Give the update a little time and observe whether there is ongoing disk or network activity using the indicators available on your PC. Do not assume that 45% means the same thing as Riot’s separately documented “0% Download” symptom.

2. Keep Riot Client open and check free disk space

Riot’s Background Patching FAQ says the Riot Client must be running for background patching. Leave the client open while the update runs rather than expecting it to continue after the client is closed.

  • Ready for Upgrades – Designed with tool-less access, easily swap out components, ensuring future-proof performance for years to come.

Check that the drive used for VALORANT has enough free space. Riot says insufficient space produces an error; freeing space may allow patching to continue, but Riot does not identify low storage as a cause of a 45% stall. If the game is set to patch in the background, Riot says you can wait for its next automatic patching cycle or press the patch button manually.

3. If you use Avast or AVG, try Riot’s specific workaround

Riot’s update-specific article, published May 29, 2026, describes VALORANT stuck at “0% Download” and says an antivirus clash with the latest patch may be responsible. It names Avast and AVG and recommends temporarily enabling that product’s Passive Mode, updating VALORANT, and then turning Passive Mode off. Riot labels this a workaround and says to use it at your own risk. It is not a confirmed fix for the 45% display or a recommendation to disable other antivirus products.

  1. Open Avast or AVG and temporarily enable Passive Mode using that product’s controls.
  2. Try updating VALORANT in Riot Client.
  3. After the update attempt, turn Passive Mode off to restore the product’s normal protection.

See Riot’s full instructions in Cannot update and launch VALORANT. If you do not use Avast or AVG, do not apply this workaround by analogy.

4. Review firewall and security software without leaving protection off

Firewall interference is covered in Riot’s general installation and network guidance, not as a confirmed explanation for a 45% update stall. Check whether your security software or Windows firewall is blocking Riot Client or VALORANT, and use Riot’s instructions for any required exceptions rather than leaving the firewall or antivirus disabled. Riot’s installation troubleshooting guide includes firewall exceptions among its general steps.

5. Try network troubleshooting only if the connection may be involved

Riot’s Network Connection Troubleshooting article offers general IP and DNS steps; it does not say that changing DNS is required or that it fixes the 45% symptom. If you are comfortable using Windows Command Prompt, Riot lists these commands for renewing network configuration and clearing the DNS cache:

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns

Changing DNS is a separate, optional troubleshooting step. Riot lists Google and Cloudflare public DNS options, but notes that some internet providers may block third-party DNS. Record your existing DNS settings before changing them. If internet access stops working, restore the original DNS settings. Avoid making several network changes at once; otherwise, it is harder to tell which change affected the connection.

6. Reinstall only after simpler checks, then contact Riot Support

Reinstallation takes more time and may require restarting your PC, so leave it until the earlier checks have not helped. Riot’s installation guide advises redownloading the installer and, if installation still fails, describes a clean reinstall involving VALORANT, Riot Vanguard, and Riot Client. It also advises running the VALORANT installer as administrator and includes Windows and graphics-driver updates among its general troubleshooting steps. Follow the guide’s current sequence at Installation Troubleshooting; the guide does not establish that reinstalling resolves a 45% stall.

If the update remains blocked after those steps, Riot recommends submitting a support ticket. Include useful details to help explain what happened: the Riot Client and Windows versions, the date of the patch, the displayed progress, any exact error message, and the steps you have already tried. Riot’s ticket recommendation is in its installation troubleshooting guide.
