Valve’s September 29, 2026 City Never Sleeps update adds six heroes and substantial changes to Deadlock, but the developer says the game is still unfinished. The two facts fit together: Valve is using early player feedback to shape core systems, and it says that work must continue before the game moves into later polish. The update does not announce a public-release date.
What Valve announced in City Never Sleeps
In its September 29, 2026 update, Valve described a major visual update to the map and neutral characters, six new heroes, HUD updates, quality-of-life additions and accessibility options. Valve also thanked the community for its support and feedback “despite the game being unfinished.” The announcement is reproduced in Deadlocker’s City Never Sleeps update.
That wording is the key to the apparent contradiction: Valve is adding content while continuing early development, rather than presenting the update as evidence that development is complete.
Why Deadlock is still unfinished
Valve says it wants players involved early because building a multiplayer game is difficult and risky. In the update, the developer explained that feedback helps the team learn what is fun and what is not while the game is still being shaped.

Valve also said that after the Old Gods New Blood update, it still had substantial work to do on the core game before moving into later polish phases, such as updating older hero artwork. Progression and customization for heroes and the Hideout are among the systems the team expects to adjust significantly in response to feedback before the game is fully released.
That makes “unfinished” a statement about development status, not a claim that the game is unplayable or that the new content is provisional. A feature-rich update can arrive while underlying systems and the broader direction remain in development.

Who are the six new Deadlock heroes?
September 30 coverage by Dot Esports named the six as Nurse Harrow, Rat King, Solomon, Deadman Danny, Baba and Violet. Its report said their full ability kits had not yet been revealed at that time. See Dot Esports’ report on the six heroes.
When are the new heroes coming out?
Dot Esports reported on September 30, 2026, that players were voting in the pregame lobby on which hero would release next. According to that report, votes from the winning team counted double, as did each player’s first daily win. The outlet listed October 2 for the first release, followed by two releases per week on Tuesdays and Fridays at 2 p.m. PT, through October 20.

That is a schedule reported at the time, not a guarantee that timing stayed unchanged. Check the game’s current announcements for the latest release status.
What work is planned, and what remains uncertain?
Valve described several areas of work at different stages. It said the Midboss model and layout, Guardians and Walkers, and older-hero remodels were future work. The team expected to address older hero models gradually in future updates.

By contrast, large item redesigns or additions and alternate modes were described as speculative and dependent on playtesting. They are possibilities under evaluation, not confirmed features or a dated roadmap. No public-release date was included in the announcement. Adding six heroes and other major update features does not establish when Valve will make the game publicly available. PC Gamer characterized the update as no sign of an imminent public release; that is the outlet’s assessment, while Valve’s own statement says core-game work remains before later polish.
