Valve is turning SteamOS into a broader hardware platform. Announced on November 12, 2025, the company’s new Steam hardware family consists of three connected products: Steam Machine, a living-room gaming PC; Steam Controller, a dedicated input device; and Steam Frame, a headset designed for both VR and non-VR gaming.

The lineup is best understood as an expansion of the Steam Deck idea rather than a simple revival of Valve’s earlier Steam Machine initiative. Steam Machine targets the television, Steam Controller targets couch-friendly input, and Steam Frame extends SteamOS into standalone and streamed headset gaming.

Steam Machine is a living-room SteamOS PC—not a closed console

Steam Machine is the centerpiece for players who want their Steam library on a television without using a conventional desktop tower. It is a compact PC-like device built around SteamOS and intended for living-room play.

XBOX Wireless Gaming Controller | Carbon Black | Textured triggers and bumpers, Hybrid D-pad, XBOX Wireless, Bluetooth, USB-C, Play across Console & PC & Cloud Devices
  • MODERNIZED DESIGN — Experience the modernized design of the XBOX Wireless Controller with sculpted surfaces and updated geometry that enhances comfort and control during long gaming sessions.
  • PRECISION PERFORMANCE — Stay on target with a hybrid D-pad and textured grips on triggers, bumpers, and back case for improved accuracy and handling.
  • SHARE BUTTON: Seamlessly capture and share content such as screenshots, recordings, and more with the new Share button.
  • VERSATILE CONNECTIVITY — Connect via USB-C for plug-and-play on console and PC, or quickly pair and switch between supported devices with XBOX Wireless and Bluetooth support.
  • BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.

That distinction matters. Valve is not presenting Steam Machine as a fixed console with a closed software catalog. It remains part of the PC-oriented Steam ecosystem, with the flexibility and compatibility considerations that come with a SteamOS computer. At the same time, the hardware and interface are being shaped around the simpler experience people expect when they sit down in front of a television.

Valve’s support material identifies HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4 connectivity. If a picture or sound problem occurs, Valve advises troubleshooting a direct connection to the display before adding complexity such as a dock, AV receiver, soundbar, HDMI switch, or adapter. That is a practical consideration for a living-room setup: intermediate equipment can introduce its own compatibility and signal problems.

Steam Machine Verified

Valve is also creating a dedicated Steam Machine Verified program. According to the Steamworks hardware documentation, its expectations are similar to Steam Deck’s input-oriented approach, while the performance baseline for Verified status is 30 frames per second at 1080p.

Valve’s verification material describes Steam Machine as approximately six times more powerful than Steam Deck. That is a positioning and verification figure from Valve, not an independent performance test. It should not be treated as a guarantee that every demanding PC game will run at a particular frame rate or graphics setting.

Steam Controller is the most immediately concrete product

The new Valve Steam Controller is a dedicated controller for Steam gaming. Its most obvious use is couch play on Steam Machine, but it is also relevant to any SteamOS setup where a player wants physical controls instead of a keyboard and mouse.

The controller is particularly important to Valve’s living-room strategy because a SteamOS PC needs an input device that works not only inside games, but also while browsing a library, changing settings, and navigating the Steam interface. A dedicated controller makes the three-product lineup feel like a coordinated platform rather than a computer paired with unrelated accessories.

Independent launch reporting places the controller’s U.S. release on May 4, 2026, at $99. That pricing and date come from independent reporting and should be distinguished from a directly confirmed Valve pricing announcement. Availability, stock, regional pricing, and seller status can change quickly, so buyers should verify the current listing and seller before purchasing. Amazon should not automatically be assumed to be an authorized Valve sales channel.

For readers looking specifically for a Valve Steam Controller, the sensible decision is to compare the current official Steam listing and any marketplace listing carefully. Check the model name, seller, return terms, shipping region, and price rather than relying on an old launch article or an unverified listing.

Logitech G F310 Wired Gamepad Controller Console - Blue/Black | Console-like layout, 4-switch D-pad
  • With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
  • Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
  • A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
  • The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
  • The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.

Steam Frame combines standalone and streamed gaming

Steam Frame is the headset in Valve’s new hardware family. It is designed for both VR and non-VR gaming, and its software model has two distinct paths:

  • Standalone play: compatible software runs on the headset itself.
  • Streaming: a host PC runs the game and sends the experience to the headset.

Those modes should not be treated as interchangeable. Valve’s Steamworks documentation says standalone Steam Frame verification covers both VR and non-VR titles. Its stated targets are 90 FPS for standalone VR games and 30 FPS at 1280×720 for standalone 2D games.

Streamed games do not receive the same standalone Verified treatment. Valve instead says streaming is optimized when the host PC runs the game well. In other words, a game that streams successfully from a powerful computer is not necessarily a game that can run directly on Steam Frame.

Why ARM64 and FEX matter

Steam Frame uses ARM hardware, which creates a compatibility challenge because much of the PC game library was built for x86 processors. Valve says it is expanding Proton for ARM64 through FEX, a translation layer intended to help x86 games run on ARM hardware.

This makes Steam Frame more than a conventional wired PC headset. Its standalone compatibility story depends on SteamOS, Proton, ARM64 support, and x86 translation working together. Streaming remains an important alternative when a title is not suitable for standalone execution.

What the Verified labels mean

The new verification programs are intended to hide some of the technical complexity from buyers. Instead of requiring every player to understand Linux compatibility, Proton, ARM translation, controller configuration, and performance tuning, Valve can identify games that meet device-specific expectations.

The labels still need to be read in context:

  • Steam Machine Verified is aimed at a living-room PC experience, with Steam Deck-like input expectations and a 1080p/30-FPS baseline for Verified status.
  • Steam Frame Verified distinguishes standalone VR and standalone 2D gaming requirements.
  • Streaming compatibility depends heavily on the host PC, network conditions, and the quality of the streaming setup rather than on standalone headset verification.

Verification is therefore a useful out-of-box guide, not an independent benchmark. The dossier contains no hands-on testing or independent performance measurements for any of the three products.

Launch timing: summer 2026, but no exact date for two products

As of August 13, 2026, Valve’s official Steamworks materials published in June 2026 say that Steam Machine and Steam Frame are shipping in summer 2026. Valve’s February 4, 2026 hardware FAQ also addresses launch timing and related hardware questions.

The reviewed official material does not establish a definitive standard launch day for either Steam Machine or Steam Frame. It also does not confirm final U.S. prices for those devices or complete country-by-country retail availability.

That leaves the current status as follows:

  • Steam Controller: independently reported U.S. launch on May 4, 2026, at $99; current inventory and marketplace availability require a fresh check.
  • Steam Machine: officially described as shipping in summer 2026; final U.S. price and exact standard launch date remain unconfirmed in the reviewed sources.
  • Steam Frame: officially described as shipping in summer 2026; final U.S. price and exact standard launch date remain unconfirmed in the reviewed sources.

Readers should be cautious with pages that present an exact date, final price, worldwide release plan, or guaranteed retailer availability unless those details come from a newer official Valve announcement.

What this means for Steam players

If you want Steam games on a TV

Steam Machine is the relevant product. Its appeal is a dedicated SteamOS box that is more console-like in placement and operation than a desktop PC, while retaining the broader PC character of Steam. The main questions for buyers will be final price, game compatibility, display setup, storage, noise, upgradeability, and regional availability—details that are not fully established in the reviewed announcement materials.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you want a controller for couch gaming

The Steam Controller is the clearest near-term purchase option. It is designed for Steam play and SteamOS navigation, and it complements Steam Machine directly. Before buying, verify whether the listing is official or from a reputable seller, whether it ships to your region, and whether the price is close to the reported $99 U.S. launch price.

If you want VR without committing to a conventional PC headset setup

Steam Frame is the product to watch. Its combination of standalone and streamed play could give users more flexibility than a headset that relies exclusively on a cable or a host computer. However, standalone support will depend on the Verified catalog and ARM64 compatibility, while streamed play will depend on the host PC and network connection.

Accessories and setup considerations

The hardware announcement also creates several practical accessory questions, although it is too early to recommend specific models without final Steam Machine specifications and verified regional compatibility.

  • Display connectivity: Steam Machine support documentation confirms HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4. Buyers should match cables and displays to the desired resolution and refresh rate, and troubleshoot direct connections before adding switches or receivers.
  • Living-room input: The Steam Controller is the obvious companion for navigating SteamOS and playing from a sofa.
  • VR comfort: Headset comfort accessories may become useful for Steam Frame, but compatibility should be confirmed after the hardware reaches stores.
  • Storage and repair: Storage expansion and repair tools may become relevant once the final design and serviceability information are available.

These are potential setup categories, not evidence that every existing cable, accessory, or PC component will be compatible with Valve’s new devices.

Why this announcement matters

Valve is trying to make SteamOS a common software layer across several kinds of hardware:

  1. Steam Deck established SteamOS as a handheld-focused interface.
  2. Steam Machine brings the same general idea to the television.
  3. Steam Controller supplies dedicated physical input for that environment.
  4. Steam Frame extends the platform into standalone and streamed VR and non-VR gaming.

The difficult part is not simply manufacturing three devices. Valve must make a large PC library feel predictable across different processors, displays, control schemes, and performance targets. Steam Machine Verified and Steam Frame Verified are attempts to make those differences understandable to ordinary buyers.

Steam Machine and Steam Frame also show two different approaches to PC compatibility. Steam Machine is a higher-power living-room SteamOS PC designed around conventional display output. Steam Frame must address ARM hardware and therefore depends more visibly on Proton, FEX, and the choice between standalone execution and streaming.

Bottom line

Valve’s November 2025 announcement introduced a coordinated three-part Steam hardware family: Steam Machine for the TV, Steam Controller for physical input, and Steam Frame for VR and non-VR headset gaming. The Controller has the clearest reported U.S. price and launch date, while Steam Machine and Steam Frame have only been given a summer 2026 shipping window in the reviewed official sources.

The most important unanswered questions are the final prices, exact launch dates, regional availability, retail channels, and real-world performance. Until Valve publishes those details—or independent testing fills in the gaps—Steam Machine and Steam Frame should be treated as promising SteamOS hardware with confirmed design goals, not as fully characterized consoles.

Can Steam Frame play games without a PC?

Steam Frame supports two different approaches: standalone games running on the headset and games streamed from a host PC. Standalone verification covers VR and non-VR titles; streamed games depend on the host computer and network rather than receiving the same standalone Verified designation.

What do Steam Machine Verified and Steam Frame Verified mean?

Steam Machine Verified uses Steam Deck-like input expectations and a 30-FPS-at-1080p baseline described in Valve’s developer documentation. Steam Frame’s standalone targets are 90 FPS for VR titles and 30 FPS at 1280×720 for standalone 2D titles. These are Valve’s verification targets, not independent benchmarks.

The Bottom Line

Valve’s new Steam family is a platform strategy: Steam Machine targets living-room PC gaming, Steam Controller handles couch input, and Steam Frame combines standalone and streamed VR/non-VR play. The Controller’s independently reported U.S. launch price is $99, while Steam Machine and Steam Frame were officially slated to ship in summer 2026 without final prices or exact launch dates confirmed in the reviewed sources.
