There is no officially announced Valve Index 2. Valve’s confirmed next VR headset is called Steam Frame, a standalone SteamOS-based device designed for wireless PC VR streaming. Valve had targeted a summer 2026 launch, but as of August 16, 2026, it had not published a final price or specific shipping date.
Steam Frame appears to occupy the role many earlier reports and fans assigned to “Index 2” or Project Deckard. That does not make “Valve Index 2” its official name, and it does not mean every Deckard leak describes the final product.

Is Valve Index 2 officially confirmed?
No. Valve has not announced a product called Valve Index 2, and there is no confirmed Index 2 price, release date, retail page, or complete specification sheet.
“Index 2” is primarily an informal search term for Valve’s next-generation VR hardware. The officially announced product is Steam Frame. The safest description is that Steam Frame is Valve’s next major VR headset and the product many readers searching for “Index 2” actually want to understand—not that Valve has renamed an officially announced Index 2.

What happened to Project Deckard?
Deckard was a widely reported codename associated with Valve’s next VR hardware project. Earlier reports, data-mining discoveries, patents, and community discussions connected it with possible standalone operation, wireless PC VR, SteamOS or Linux software, and new tracking and input systems.
Valve later announced Steam Frame, the confirmed product most closely associated with that earlier reporting. However, Valve has not publicly documented every link between Deckard and Steam Frame, so old leaks should be treated as historical reports or speculation. A leaked display resolution, processor, controller design, or release date is not a Steam Frame specification unless Valve or reliable hands-on reporting confirms it.
What is Steam Frame?
Steam Frame is described as a standalone-capable VR headset built around a VR-oriented version of SteamOS. Its central idea is to provide both:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- standalone access to supported Steam and SteamVR content; and
- wireless streaming from a gaming PC for more demanding PC VR experiences.
Valve has also been reported to use a dedicated wireless adapter for PC VR streaming. That could reduce competition with household Wi-Fi traffic, but wireless PC VR still depends on radio conditions, network layout, encoding, decoding, and distance. It should not be assumed to have the same latency or consistency as a wired DisplayPort connection.

This is a significant change from the original Index. Steam Frame is not simply an Index with newer screens and faster internal hardware; it represents a move toward a portable, standalone, SteamOS-centered platform.
Steam Frame release date: when is it coming?
Valve’s timing has changed from a narrow early-2026 target to a broader summer 2026 target:
- Valve initially described Steam Frame as launching in early 2026.
- Later communication moved the public target to summer 2026.
- Valve had not supplied a specific public shipping day or final consumer price by August 16, 2026.
- A US FCC equipment authorization was reportedly granted on July 29, 2026.
The FCC authorization is a meaningful regulatory milestone, but it is not a retail launch announcement. It does not establish the shipping date, price, final software, global availability, or launch inventory.

How much will Steam Frame cost?
Steam Frame’s final price was not available in the sources checked. The firmest pricing signal is a reported Valve aim to price it below the original Valve Index full-kit price of $999. That is an objective or pricing goal, not a confirmed MSRP.
“Below $999” also does not necessarily mean cheaper than an Index in every real-world configuration. Compare the complete system cost, including:

Steam Frame confirmed features versus unknown specifications
| Feature | What is supported | What remains unknown |
|---|---|---|
| Operating model | Standalone-capable headset with wireless PC VR streaming | How demanding native games will perform |
| Software | VR-focused SteamOS environment | Exact native game library and compatibility requirements |
| PC streaming | Wireless streaming is a central feature; a dedicated adapter has been reported | Exact wireless standard, latency, range, and adapter pricing |
| Display | Valve has announced the product concept | Resolution, refresh-rate modes, field of view, and lens type |
| Internal hardware | Standalone hardware is required | Processor, GPU, RAM, storage, battery capacity, runtime, weight, and thermals |
| Tracking and input | Final details require confirmation | Inside-out tracking, eye or hand tracking, controller design, Index controller support, and lighthouse compatibility |
| Connections | Wireless PC VR is emphasized | Wired DisplayPort operation and other final connectivity options |
| Games and bundles | Steam compatibility is the platform goal | Native Half-Life: Alyx support and any launch-game bundle |
These unknowns matter because they determine whether Steam Frame is a true replacement for an Index, a complementary standalone device, or a different class of PC VR product altogether.
Valve Index versus Steam Frame
| Question | Valve Index | Steam Frame |
|---|---|---|
| Officially announced? | Yes | Yes |
| Original launch | 2019 | Targeted for 2026 |
| Primary model | PC-tethered VR | Standalone plus wireless PC streaming |
| PC required? | Yes | Intended to support standalone use |
| Tracking | Uses SteamVR base stations for its full tracking setup | Expected to emphasize inside-out tracking; final details are unconfirmed |
| US full-kit price shown by Valve | $999 at the checked listing | Not announced in the available sources |
| Half-Life: Alyx | Included with the current Index store listing | No equivalent bundle was confirmed |
The original Index remains notable for high refresh-rate options, a broad field of view, Index controllers with finger tracking, and mature SteamVR integration. Its drawbacks are equally clear: it needs a PC, a cable, external tracking hardware, and an aging accessory ecosystem.
Steam Frame may simplify setup and add portability, but standalone and wireless designs can involve trade-offs in battery life, sustained performance, thermals, display quality, controller sophistication, latency, and native game compatibility. Those cannot be judged from the product name alone.
Should you buy a Valve Index now?
Buy or keep an Index if:
- You already own SteamVR base stations and Index controllers.
- You primarily play PC VR from a powerful desktop.
- You value high refresh rates, lighthouse tracking, and the established Index controller ecosystem.
- You can accept the cable, external setup, and older hardware.
- You find an Index at a meaningful discount rather than paying its original full-kit price.
Wait for Steam Frame if:
- Standalone VR is important to you.
- You want wireless PC VR and do not want to install base stations.
- You are comfortable waiting for independent reviews of latency, battery life, comfort, thermals, and compatibility.
- You want Valve’s newest VR platform rather than a mature but aging PC-only headset.
Avoid buying an Index immediately if:
- The purchase would be near the original $999 full-kit price.
- You would need to buy the entire tracking and controller setup from scratch.
- You are specifically waiting for standalone or wireless operation.
- Replacement accessory availability is important and the local Steam store shows limited stock.
Valve’s US Index page listed the headset at $499, the headset-and-controllers package at $749, controllers at $279, base stations at $149, and the full kit at $999 when checked. Stock was mixed, with several configurations and accessories out of stock. Prices and inventory vary by region and can change quickly, so check the official Valve Index store page before buying.

- VISUALS: 2880 x 2880 per eye resolution and 16.6 million pixels, enjoy the pinnacle of clarity
- SCREEN TECHNOLOGY: QLED display, supporting local dimming and HDR, achieving high contrast and vivid colors
- LENS: Glass aspheric lens, providing edge-to-edge clarity and reducing distortion
- ULTRA-LOW LATENCY: Up to 120Hz, Experience minimal lag with high refresh rates, providing a fluid and responsive VR environment for immersive simulations
- COMPATIBILITY: Seamlessly integrate with your existing SteamVR setup, including compatibility with controllers like the Valve Index Knuckles or HTC VIVE
What about Half-Life: Alyx?
The current Index store listing includes Half-Life: Alyx. No source checked confirms a new Valve VR game launching with Steam Frame, and there is no evidence here for a Half-Life: Alyx 2.
Do not assume that Steam Frame will run Alyx natively without a PC. Native standalone execution and wireless streaming from a gaming PC are different forms of compatibility. Valve would need to clarify which mode is supported.
How Steam Frame compares with alternatives
Readers who need VR now have different options, depending on their priorities:
Recommended Free Tools
- Meta Quest 3: the established mainstream standalone alternative, also relevant for wired or wireless PC VR. It offers a currently available ecosystem, but uses Meta’s platform rather than SteamOS. Check the official Meta store for current price and availability.
- Bigscreen Beyond 2: a specialized, lightweight PC VR headset for enthusiasts who prioritize low weight and already have the required PC VR tracking and accessories. It is not a standalone replacement. See Bigscreen’s official site.
- HTC Vive Focus Vision: a standalone-capable and PC VR-oriented alternative for buyers considering a broader enthusiast or professional feature set. It does not offer the same Steam-native integration goal. See HTC’s official product page.
These products should be compared on comfort, tracking, PC streaming, native software, support, and total system cost—not just headline headset prices.
What Valve still needs to confirm
- Final MSRP and complete bundle contents
- Specific launch date, countries, and initial inventory
- Display resolution, lenses, field of view, and refresh rates
- Processor, GPU, RAM, storage, battery runtime, weight, and thermal limits
- Controller design and Index controller compatibility
- Tracking method and base-station support
- Wireless adapter specifications and whether wired PC VR is supported
- Native SteamOS game compatibility and SteamVR requirements
- Whether Half-Life: Alyx has native standalone support
- Warranty, repair, and replacement-part availability
How to judge real release signals
Not all “leaks” carry the same weight. The strongest evidence would be Valve’s official Steam Frame product page, a dated Valve hardware announcement with price, or an official Steam News post. Authorized retailer listings and reputable hands-on reports follow. FCC filings can show that a device is moving through regulatory approval, but they cannot establish its price, launch date, final software, or worldwide availability.
Patents, trademarks, SteamVR code discoveries, anonymous posts, and fan predictions are weaker evidence. They can help explain why Deckard and Index 2 became widely discussed, but they should not be used to fill gaps in Steam Frame’s official specifications.
The Bottom Line
Steam Frame is the real story behind the current “Valve Index 2” search interest. It is Valve’s announced next VR headset, but not a confirmed product named Index 2. Wait for Valve’s final price, launch date, compatibility details, and independent testing before treating it as a direct replacement for the original Index.
