Valve has made Steam Frame hardware reference files available in its SteamHardware GitLab repository, according to community reporting and Hackaday. The reported materials include mechanical CAD, expansion-port documentation, and a minimal USB 3.0 hub example created in KiCad. They give makers reference material for designing accessories and exploring the headset’s front expansion port, but do not prove that a derived design will work or has been tested or endorsed by Valve.
What is in the Steam Frame hardware repository?
Reporting on the repository describes STEP geometry for the headset’s core module, head strap, and controllers, along with documented locations for the controllers’ infrared tracking LEDs. STEP files are CAD geometry intended for use in design software; they are not automatically ready-to-print STL files. Makers may be able to adapt the geometry for their own workflows, but should check the repository for the current files and formats.

The LED locations matter when designing anything that sits near or around a controller: an accessory that covers or obstructs tracking features could interfere with their intended use. The available reporting does not establish a compatibility list for particular accessories.
What can makers do with the files?
The mechanical references can help with custom exterior accessories, prototypes, or a carrying case shaped around the headset’s components. A typical mechanically oriented project involves working with CAD geometry and, if desired, producing a physical prototype. The files are reference material, not finished consumer products.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
There is also material for more advanced electronics projects. The repository is reported to include front expansion-port interface documentation and USB 3.0 hub examples: a full example in Altium and a minimal example in KiCad. These are reference designs, not evidence that an arbitrary peripheral or a new design will work.
What does the front expansion port support?
Hackaday reports that the port documentation describes high-speed MIPI camera and PCI Express interfaces. That is a description of interfaces in the documentation, not a guarantee of practical compatibility for any specific camera, PCIe device, or DIY board. The available reporting does not establish a pinout, electrical limits, safety specifications, or a list of supported peripherals.

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Anyone planning to build port-connected hardware should read the current interface documents and warnings in Valve’s Steam Frame hardware repository before designing or connecting anything. Do not infer electrical details from a block-level interface description or assume that the example hub design is a validated plug-and-play accessory.
Which kind of project is a sensible starting point?
| Project scope | Typical work | What the reported files offer | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mechanical accessory | CAD adaptation and optional 3D printing | Reported STEP references for the core module, head strap, and controllers | Check fit and avoid obstructing controller tracking LEDs; no accessory compatibility is established. |
| Expansion-port electronics | Interface-document review, PCB design, and assembly | Reported port documentation and USB 3.0 hub examples in Altium and KiCad | Read the current warnings and interface details; the examples do not demonstrate that a new design or peripheral has been tested. |
The mechanical route is the more straightforward place to start for a maker who wants to shape a case or exterior part. A port-connected board calls for electronics design experience and close attention to the primary interface documentation.

What is not established by the release?
- The exact license and rules for commercial use of the Steam Frame files have not been verified in the reporting available here. Do not assume that guidance for a different Valve headset applies.
- The repository’s detailed electrical warnings and revision history have not been independently confirmed in the linked reporting. Check the live repository for current documents before building.
- The presence of reference geometry or example circuits does not show that Valve has tested, certified, endorsed, or guaranteed accessories derived from them.
Valve previously published extensibility materials for Index, including CAD models and example accessories. Its Index-specific guidance is useful context for Valve’s earlier modding support, but it does not define the Steam Frame repository’s license or commercial-use terms.
