What happened to EA, and how large was the takeover?
EA announced that its acquisition by a consortium of the Public Investment Fund (PIF), Silver Lake and Affinity Partners was complete on August 4, 2026. The transaction was valued at approximately $55 billion in enterprise value, according to EA’s 2025 transaction disclosure. That is the deal’s stated enterprise value, not a claim that the buyers paid $55 billion in cash.

EA’s disclosure also described approximately $20 billion in debt financing. The distinction matters: the financing figure is part of the transaction’s structure, while the $55 billion figure is its enterprise value. The closing announcement and independent Associated Press coverage identify the transaction as completed, rather than a proposal still awaiting a close.
What are the serious allegations and concerns?
Senators raised foreign-influence and national-security concerns
In October 2025, US Senators Richard Blumenthal and Elizabeth Warren publicly raised concerns about potential Saudi government influence and national-security risks associated with the proposed acquisition. They pointed to possible access to sensitive personal information collected from EA users, as well as the company’s AI development and product design and direction.

The senators characterized the risks in strong terms, but their statement is an expression of lawmakers’ concerns—not a regulator’s finding that the Saudi government accessed EA user data, improperly influenced the company or interfered with its products. The distinction between a warning about potential risk and evidence of actual conduct is essential.
House Democrats warned debt could create pressure to cut costs
In January 2026, House Democrats asked the Federal Trade Commission to scrutinize the proposal. They warned that debt financing could create incentives for cost-cutting, including layoffs, offshoring, restructuring or studio closures. Those were prospective concerns about what might follow the deal, not findings that any of those outcomes had occurred.

The public statements and transaction disclosures cited here do not establish that the acquisition caused particular job cuts, studio closures, game cancellations or changes to creative policy after closing. A prediction should not be presented as a measured post-acquisition result.
Is Xbox buying EA?
No substantiation for that claim appears in the official Xbox material described here. The Xbox Wire post concerns Microsoft’s own Xbox reset; it does not link Xbox to EA or announce an acquisition plan. The EA transaction that closed in August 2026 was with PIF, Silver Lake and Affinity Partners.

That does not prove that no future corporate discussions could ever occur. It does mean the claim that Xbox is acquiring EA should be treated as unsubstantiated speculation unless a direct, attributable source establishes it.
