Deadlock is Valve’s multiplayer game, and it is still in early development. The official Steam community page uses that exact description, and its most recent posts, dated October 5 and October 6, 2026, show the game is still being changed. The most detailed public account of how it plays is a hands-on preview by Sean Hollister of The Verge, published August 13, 2024. That preview describes a six-versus-six hero shooter built around lane pressure, AI-controlled troops, and a team fight that escalates toward a final objective. Read it as a record of an early build from two years ago, not as a guide to the game as it stands in October 2026.
What Valve has said the game is
The official Steam community page describes Deadlock as “a multiplayer game in early development.” The latest dated posts it shows are a minor update from October 5, 2026 and a hero post from October 6, 2026. Those posts confirm recent activity. They do not set a release date or a final feature list.
What the August 2024 preview described
Hollister’s article is the most specific description of the game’s structure available from a public source. It reflects one writer’s play session on an early build, and it is the basis for every gameplay detail in this section.
Six players per side, troops in four lanes
According to the preview, two teams of six players fight as heroes while supporting Troopers. Troopers are NPC units that continually respawn and move forward through four lanes toward stationary defenses, which the preview names as Guardians and Walkers. Heroes help the Troopers break through those defenses. The match ends with a fight against a Patron.

Heroes, souls, and melee
The preview says players buy upgrades with souls and use melee attacks and parries in combat. It cites Wraith and McGinnis as examples of heroes. These details came from Hollister’s own play. They were not checked against a published specification, and Valve’s later statements (covered below) say early heroes could be changed or removed.
How it felt next to other shooters
Hollister said Deadlock’s combat depends less on precise aim than Valorant or Apex Legends. He compared its feel to Overwatch and Team Fortress 2. The preview also invokes Dota 2 as a reference point. These are subjective impressions from limited play, so treat them as framing rather than a measured ranking.
| Reference game | How the 2024 preview related it to Deadlock |
|---|---|
| Valorant | Deadlock was described as relying less on sharp aim. |
| Apex Legends | Deadlock was described as relying less on sharp aim. |

Why the game is deliberately rough
In an October 24, 2024 developer update posted to the Deadlock Forums, Valve described Hero Labs as an experimental hero matchmaking mode. Its purpose was to collect design feedback while heroes were at a very early stage. The update said many heroes could have placeholder models, names, effects, or abilities, and that any of them could be changed, removed, or reintroduced.

Access and status as of October 2026
PC Gamer’s September 30, 2026 report described Deadlock as invite-only at the time of publication. That is the most recent access status found. Invite policies can change, so confirm the current situation before planning around it.
Quick Recap
- Read the most recent dated post on Valve’s official Steam community page for Deadlock.
- Look there for any statement about invites or access.
- Treat secondhand reports, including the September 2026 article, as a snapshot of that date.
What the 2024 account cannot tell you
- It is a single writer’s account of an early build, not independent testing or a current official guide.
- Valve’s current official description does not confirm the lane structure, the defensive objectives, or the hero roster from the preview.
- The preview’s reference to nearly 20,000 players belongs to August 2024. It is not a current player count.
