A SteamOS beta note about preliminary support for its wireless adapter is evidence of software integration, not proof that the headset is launching imminently or that shipping has begun.
Is Valve’s Deckard headset launching soon?
As of October 4, 2026, the clearest reported availability milestone is that reservations opened on September 14. That is distinct from a confirmed shipping date or a statement that the device is generally available. Valve’s current documentation uses the name Steam Frame; “Deckard” is the earlier codename associated with the headset.

The timeline has shifted across reports. At its November 12, 2025 announcement, Valve’s new headset was described as targeting early 2026. Later coverage referred to a summer 2026 target. Tom’s Hardware then reported the September reservation opening. These are dated expectations and milestones, not interchangeable confirmation of when customers will receive a headset. Current regional stock, shipping dates, and official checkout pricing were not established in the available reporting.
What the SteamOS beta update actually indicates
PC Gamer reported on August 11, 2026 that SteamOS Beta and Preview channels had gained “preliminary support” for the Steam Frame Wireless Adapter. That points to ongoing work connecting the headset and its wireless hardware to Valve’s software ecosystem. The report also noted uncertainty about the scope of the change: it could relate to waking Steam Machines rather than broad, finished adapter support.

It is therefore too strong to treat the note as a launch announcement, proof of final hardware readiness, or a guarantee of general availability. A beta-channel change can precede a release, but the wording and reported ambiguity do not establish a launch date.
What Steam Frame is—and how it relates to Deckard
Valve presents Steam Frame as a standalone virtual-reality headset. The company says it is designed primarily for low-latency streaming of a player’s Steam Library from a PC, while also supporting standalone VR and non-VR experiences. Valve’s Steamworks documentation lists SteamOS, SteamVR, and OpenXR compatibility.

Valve officially announced Steam Frame on November 12, 2025. UploadVR’s announcement coverage described Deckard as the earlier codename tied to the device. The naming matters: current product information and documentation use Steam Frame, rather than presenting Deckard as a separate headset still awaiting announcement.
Reservation report and the price claim
Tom’s Hardware reported that reservations opened on September 14, 2026, and cited a starting price of $1,059. That figure is the report’s dated commercial claim, not a price verified here on a readable Valve checkout page. Pricing, regional availability, and delivery estimates can vary or change; check Valve’s market-specific checkout before relying on the amount or placing an order.
