VASSAL is a free, open-source engine for playing digital adaptations of board and card games. To play a particular game, you need its VASSAL module as well as the application: the engine is the platform, not a game library that automatically includes every title. Modules can support online, play-by-email, hotseat, or solitaire play, depending on the game and module.
What VASSAL is—and what it isn’t
VASSAL describes itself as “a game engine for building and playing online adaptations of board games and card games” on its About page. It provides a framework for representing a game digitally. The module for a specific game supplies its boards, pieces, cards, and other game-specific elements.
That distinction matters: installing VASSAL alone does not give you a playable copy of a particular board game. You must also find and open a module for that game. Some modules offer optional extensions that add or alter content.
How you can play
VASSAL supports real-time online play and play by email. Its user guide also describes offline hotseat play, where players take turns on the same device, and solitaire play. Which modes are practical depends on the module; check its listing and instructions rather than assuming every game supports every option. See the official user guide for general guidance.

Finding the right module
Before committing to a module, check its page and documentation for the details that affect your game night:
- Does a module exist for the exact game or edition you want to play?
- Does it support your preferred mode, such as live online play or email turns?
- How much does it automate? Some digital adaptations may handle more of the setup or rules than others; don’t assume the engine enforces every rule.
- Are instructions clear, and are any extensions you need available and maintained?
The user guide describes the collection as “several hundred” modules, but it is undated and covers older software versions. That figure should not be treated as a current inventory count. The library itself is the better place to check whether a particular game is available.

- EASY TO LEARN, QUICK TO SET UP: Plays in 60-90 minutes with minimal table space. A perfect gateway for new strategy gamers, families with teens, and fans of Catan, Splendor, and Spice Road who want something fresh.
- THREE STRATEGIC DECKS: Trade cards build gold, Influence cards create ongoing effects you trigger every turn, and Specialty cards unlock powerful one-shot abilities and victory points. Mix and match for a different game every time.
- MULTIPLE PATHS TO VICTORY: Race through medieval trade routes, collect resources to convert into victory points, or build a card engine that pays off late. First to 20 victory points wins, but how you get there is up to you.
- UPGRADE YOUR TRADER: Three permanent upgrade tracks let you move farther, draw more cards, and play more from your hand. Spend gold to compound your options as the game accelerates.
- FITS IN A BACKPACK: 7-inch box sets up in 5 minutes on any table. Easy to throw in a bag for trips and game nights without hauling a giant box around.
Making a module
VASSAL is also for hobbyists who want to adapt a board or card game for digital play. The official Designer’s Guide explains how to use the Module Editor to create modules and extensions. Building one is distinct from simply installing the engine: the module creator must assemble the game-specific components and configure how the adaptation works.

VASSAL is a general-purpose tabletop platform, not a guarantee of a uniform digital experience. The module determines what is included and how much the software assists with play, so the quality of instructions, automation, and support can vary by game. The official guide says VASSAL was originally created in 1999 by Rodney Kinney; that is a historical origin date, not a measure of current activity or module availability.
