Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before replacing anything, record:
- Which program or game shows the error
- When it appears: at Windows sign-in, when launching the program, or during installation
- The complete message, including whether it says “missing,” “not found,” “could not be loaded,” or “specified module could not be found”
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit: open Settings > System > About and check System type
vb6chs.dll is a 32-bit Microsoft Visual Basic 6 localization-support DLL for Simplified Chinese. Microsoft lists it among the VB6 runtime’s extended files, but says it is not shipped with Windows and must be supplied by an application installer. See Microsoft’s Visual Basic 6 support statement.
The safest fix is therefore to identify the program that needs it and repair or reinstall that program from its original publisher.

What the error means
Common variants include:
- “The program can’t start because vb6chs.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because vb6chs.dll was not found.”
- “The language DLL ‘vb6chs.dll’ could not be found.”
- “There was a problem starting vb6chs.dll.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
The last message does not always mean that vb6chs.dll itself is absent. The file may exist while another dependency required by it is missing or damaged.

Fix 1: Repair the affected application
This is the fastest and most likely solution.
If it is a modern Windows app package
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three dots beside it.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Launch the program again.
Windows may not show Repair for every application. If the error remains, try Reset only if you understand that it can remove application settings or local data.
If it is a traditional desktop application
- Press Windows key, type Control Panel, and open it.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Find the affected application.
- Right-click it and choose Repair or Change.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
If the program has its own maintenance shortcut, open its installation media or Start-menu folder and look for Repair, Modify, or Reinstall.
A successful repair normally restores the missing file to the location expected by that application. If the program starts without the vb6chs.dll message, stop there. Do not replace the repaired file with a separately downloaded copy.

Fix 2: Reinstall from the official application source
Use this when repair is unavailable or does not restore the file.
- Back up the program’s documents, saved games, templates, databases, or configuration files.
- Download the application again from its publisher, or locate the original trusted installation media.
- If possible, uninstall the damaged installation through Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the program using an administrator account.
- Start the program once after installation completes.
For an old game or launcher, use its built-in Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity function before reinstalling. Those functions can restore application files without removing user data.
Microsoft’s official VB6 Service Pack 6 cumulative update is named VB60SP6-KB2708437-x86-ENU.msi. It updates VB6 runtime and extended files, but it is not proof that every application requiring vb6chs.dll should install it. The affected program’s own installer remains the definitive source.
Do not assume that installing the standard VB6 runtime will restore this file. Microsoft distinguishes core files such as msvbvm60.dll from the separate localization-support files.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
An old or unsigned application can lose a file after antivirus cleanup. This is a possible cause, not proof that every missing-file error is an antivirus issue.
- Open Start > Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent actions for the affected application or
vb6chs.dll. - Open an entry to view its details.
Restore the file only when all of these conditions are met:
- It came from the application’s original installer or trusted publisher media.
- You have confirmed that the detection is a false positive with the publisher or security provider.
- You have rescanned the complete installation afterward.
Do not blindly disable antivirus protection. If quarantine removed the file, repair or reinstall the application after resolving the detection so the complete package is restored.
Fix 4: Confirm the application’s architecture and location
vb6chs.dll is a 32-bit legacy component. A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows through Windows’ compatibility layer, but installing a 64-bit replacement is not a solution.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check the application rather than guessing from the Windows version:
- Right-click the program’s shortcut.
- Choose Open file location.
- Right-click the main
.exefile and select Properties. - Review the Details and Compatibility tabs.
- Check whether the executable is installed in its expected application folder.
Do not copy an arbitrary DLL into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Those folders have different architecture roles, and placing the wrong file there can create version conflicts or security problems. The application installer determines the correct location, which is often the program’s own directory.
If manual restoration is unavoidable, use only the original vendor media and copy the file exactly as the installer does. Do not mix a file from an unrelated VB6-era application. Public file records may list versions such as 5.0.81.69, but those records are identification clues, not a Microsoft compatibility catalogue.
Fix 5: Do not use regsvr32 automatically
A missing localization DLL is not automatically a COM or ActiveX registration problem. regsvr32 applies to DLLs that provide the registration entry point expected by that command.

regsvr32 vb6chs.dll
may produce an error such as “DllRegisterServer was not found,” and it will not repair a missing application dependency. Microsoft’s DLL and OCX registration guidance concerns registerable components; it does not establish that vb6chs.dll should be registered.
Use regsvr32 only when the application publisher specifically instructs you to register a particular component and identifies the correct 32-bit command environment.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components only if other programs also fail
Because Microsoft says vb6chs.dll is not shipped with Windows, Windows repair commands will not normally recreate an application-owned copy. Use them when several unrelated programs are failing, Windows itself reports corruption, or system files were damaged in a broader incident.
Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it, choose Run as administrator, and run these commands in order:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for it to finish, then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows and test the application. Microsoft documents this DISM and SFC repair sequence.
Success means DISM completes without an unrepaired error and SFC reports that it repaired corruption or found no integrity violations. If the application still reports vb6chs.dll, return to the application installer rather than repeating these commands indefinitely.
Running SFC and DISM repeatedly without knowing what changed is slow; Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what needs attention, while repair actions are handled by the full version. Reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix when its own file is missing.

If the error began immediately after an application update, cleanup utility, driver change, or system rollback, undo the most relevant change first.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →For a driver-related event:
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand the likely category, such as Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, or Network adapters.
- Right-click the recently changed device.
- Select Properties > Driver.
- Use Roll Back Driver if available, or choose Update Driver.
- Restart Windows.
A driver is not a normal source of vb6chs.dll; this step is relevant only when the timing points to a wider system change or the application depends on specialized hardware.
Windows Features will not normally install this file. You can check Control Panel > Programs > Turn Windows features on or off, but enabling .NET Framework or legacy components should be done only when the application’s documentation specifically requires them. Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, and .NET are not substitutes for the VB6 localization file.
Hunting through device models and driver versions manually can be tedious; Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers, with installation handled by the full version. That will not replace vb6chs.dll, so repair the owning application first.
Fix 8: Use System Restore for a clearly timed failure
If the application worked until a recent system change and a suitable restore point exists:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exeand press Enter. - Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the failure.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the changes.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can change system files, drivers, registry settings, and installed programs, but it does not normally remove personal files. It is not a replacement for reinstalling an application whose installer files are incomplete. See Microsoft’s System Restore instructions.
If the error appears with no visible program
A leftover startup entry may be calling an application that was partially removed.
Check:
- Settings > Apps > Startup for unfamiliar entries.
- Task Manager > Startup apps for the same program.
- Task Scheduler for tasks linked to the old application.
- Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application for the executable name.
- The shortcut properties and installation folders for the program that was recently uninstalled.
Remove the parent application or its startup entry through the publisher’s uninstaller. Do not delete the DLL error’s named file from a Windows folder as a substitute for finding the caller.
Why random DLL downloads are a bad fix
A standalone download can have the wrong version, wrong architecture, altered contents, or an unrelated dependency set. It may also leave the actual application installation damaged. The safe sources are:
- The affected program’s original installer
- Its publisher’s official download or update channel
- A trusted vendor-supplied prerequisite package
- Microsoft’s official VB6 documentation or update package when the application specifically requires it
Never treat a search result for a similarly named DLL as proof that it belongs to your program.
FAQ
Is vb6chs.dll a Windows system file?
No. Microsoft lists it as a VB6 localization file that applications must distribute themselves.
What does CHS mean?
It refers to Simplified Chinese localization support.
Does Windows 11 or Windows 10 need a 64-bit version?
No 64-bit replacement should be assumed. The identified file is 32-bit, and a 32-bit legacy application can use 32-bit dependencies on 64-bit Windows.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Which program installed vb6chs.dll?
The filename alone cannot tell you. Identify the executable, shortcut, installer, event-log entry, or antivirus record connected with the error.
Will installing Visual Basic 6 fix it?
Not necessarily. The core VB6 runtime and localization-support files are separate. Repair the application that requires the file.
Should I copy it into System32 or SysWOW64?
No, not generically. Use the location specified by the application’s original installer.
What if every repair attempt fails?
Reinstall the complete application from trusted media, test it in a clean user profile or compatibility environment, and contact the publisher. If the software is obsolete and unsupported, replacing it may be safer than continuing to assemble legacy files manually.
