VBoxMRXNP.dll is the Windows network-provider DLL used by Oracle VirtualBox Shared Folders. It allows a Windows guest to access folders shared from the host through paths such as:

Windows loads the DLL through the Multiple Provider Router, a Windows system that manages network providers. The related Shared Folders driver, VBoxSF.sys, and the provider registration must also be present and compatible.

On a typical Windows guest, the file may be found at:
C:WindowsSystem32VBoxMRXNP.dll
On a 64-bit guest, the 32-bit component may also be present at:
C:WindowsSysWOW64VBoxMRXNP.dll
The exact location depends on the guest architecture and the Guest Additions package installed. Older VirtualBox packages included both 32-bit and 64-bit components where appropriate.
Before repairing anything, confirm that the error is occurring inside a VirtualBox Windows guest rather than on the physical Windows host. Also note the full message, its path, when it appears, and whether the problem began after a VirtualBox upgrade, snapshot restore, Windows upgrade, Guest Additions reinstall, or antivirus action.

Fix 1: Reinstall matching Guest Additions
This is the most likely solution and should be tried before copying files, changing the registry, or repairing unrelated runtimes.
Insert the correct Guest Additions image
- Start the affected Windows virtual machine.
- Click inside the VM window.
- On the VirtualBox window menu, select Devices.
- Select Insert Guest Additions CD Image.
- If Windows asks whether to run the installer, choose Run VBoxWindowsAdditions.exe.
- If nothing opens, press
Windows + Eto open File Explorer. - Select This PC and open the VirtualBox Guest Additions CD drive.
- Double-click
VBoxWindowsAdditions.exe. - Follow the setup wizard.
- Accept the driver installation prompts.
- Restart the Windows guest when the installation finishes.
The Guest Additions ISO should match the VirtualBox version installed on the host. If the host runs a newer release than the guest additions, install the matching package rather than keeping an older guest component.
If the CD image is not available, install the matching VirtualBox host package from Oracle’s official VirtualBox download page. The Guest Additions ISO is normally included with that installation.

Confirm that the repair worked
After restarting the guest:
- Open File Explorer.
- Test the shared folder under
\VBOXSVR. - Check whether the original startup or application message has disappeared.
- Look in
C:WindowsSystem32and, on a 64-bit guest,C:WindowsSysWOW64. - Confirm that
VBoxMRXNP.dlland the relatedVBoxSF.sysdriver are present.
If the installer completes but the error remains, shut down the VM completely rather than using a saved state, start it again, and repeat the test. Then check the installed Guest Additions version against the VirtualBox version shown on the host.
For unattended installation from the mounted Guest Additions drive, open an elevated Command Prompt, change to the CD drive, and run:
VBoxWindowsAdditions.exe /S
On an old Windows guest, certificate prompts can prevent driver installation. Oracle documents this certificate utility command for applicable legacy installations:
VBoxCertUtil.exe add-trusted-publisher vbox*.cer --root vbox*.cer
Use these commands only with the certificate and installer files from the official Guest Additions image.
Fix 2: Check the VirtualBox version and Windows architecture
A DLL can exist and still fail if it belongs to the wrong Guest Additions release or architecture.
First identify the guest architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Read System type.
On Windows 10, you can also right-click This PC, select Properties, and read the system type.
Then check VirtualBox on the host:
- Shut down the guest.
- Open VirtualBox Manager on the host.
- Select the affected VM.
- Open Settings if needed and review its configuration.
- Check the VirtualBox host version from the application’s Help or About menu.
Install Guest Additions from the same VirtualBox release as the host whenever possible. The Windows installer normally selects the appropriate 32-bit or 64-bit files automatically.

Old guests such as Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7 may not support every current Guest Additions release. If a legacy guest cannot install the current image, use the older compatible Guest Additions ISO that corresponds to the VirtualBox version and the guest’s Windows requirements. Do not replace one DLL manually with a file from an unrelated release.
A Windows 7 report documented an error stating that VBoxMRXNP.dll was either not designed to run on Windows or contained an error when Guest Additions 7.0.12 was installed. Updating to 7.0.13 or newer resolved that documented case. This does not mean every VBoxMRXNP.dll error is caused by version 7.0.12.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine a valid Guest Additions file, especially after an update or repair.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
VBoxMRXNP.dll,VBoxSF.sys, or VirtualBox. - Expand the event and read its location and action.
- Restore or allow the file only when it came from a verified official VirtualBox installer and the signature is trustworthy.
- If you are uncertain, do not restore it. Reinstall Guest Additions from the official image instead.
- Restart the guest and test the shared folder again.
Protection History does not retain events indefinitely, so an older quarantine may no longer be visible. If the file repeatedly disappears after reinstalling, review the antivirus detection details before adding an exclusion.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components
Windows component corruption is less specific to this Oracle file, but it can interfere with loading and installation. Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker.

- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Run the Guest Additions installer again.
Success means DISM or SFC reports that the operation completed, Windows repairs are applied if needed, and Guest Additions installs without the original loader error. These tools repair Windows components; they are not guaranteed to restore an Oracle Guest Additions DLL.

Fix 5: Reinstall related drivers through Guest Additions
Do not search for VBoxSF.sys or VBoxMRXNP.dll on a third-party driver site. Run the Guest Additions installer again and allow it to repair the complete driver set.

If Device Manager shows a problem:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand System devices and Network adapters.
- Look for a VirtualBox device with a warning icon.
- Right-click it and select Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
- Return to the Guest Additions ISO and rerun
VBoxWindowsAdditions.exe. - Restart the guest.
Do not uninstall a working VirtualBox device unless the installer cannot repair it and you have a current VM backup or snapshot. The DLL and driver need to remain from the same Guest Additions package.

A Windows in-place upgrade can remove third-party network-provider settings in some situations. That can leave the DLL present but prevent Windows from loading it correctly.
The safest response is to reinstall Guest Additions, because the installer restores the provider registration and related driver together. Do not manually create registry entries based on a guide or use a registry cleaner.
You can inspect whether the file exists and whether the provider is being loaded, but registry editing is not the first-line repair. If the error began immediately after a Windows upgrade, record that fact and proceed with a Guest Additions reinstall.

Fix 7: Use System Restore after a known change
Use System Restore only if the problem began after a specific software, driver, or Windows change and the earlier fixes did not help.
- Press
Windows + R. - Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point created before the error began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
Afterward, check VirtualBox and Guest Additions versions again. System Restore may change installed drivers or applications, so reinstall the matching Guest Additions package if shared folders remain broken.
Do not register or copy this DLL manually
Do not run:
regsvr32 VBoxMRXNP.dll
regsvr32 is intended for self-registering COM and OLE DLLs. VBoxMRXNP.dll is a Windows network-provider component, so its repair depends on provider registration, the Shared Folders driver, compatible files, and valid installation details.

Also avoid copying the DLL into System32, SysWOW64, a game directory, or an application folder. A random replacement may contain malware, use the wrong architecture, have an incompatible version, or lack the registration and driver that Windows needs.

Windows may display different wording depending on the guest version and the process that triggered the load:

The program named in the message is not necessarily the owner of the file. Explorer, startup processes, or another application may simply be the first process that causes Windows to load the VirtualBox network provider.

Is vboxmrxnp.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is installed by VirtualBox Guest Additions inside a Windows virtual machine.

No. Use the matching official Guest Additions image. Isolated downloads can be malicious, incorrectly versioned, or built for the wrong architecture.
Does reinstalling Visual C++ fix it?
Not normally. This is a VirtualBox Shared Folders component, not a Visual C++ runtime. Repair Guest Additions first.
Why does the error appear when opening an unrelated program?
Windows may load the network provider during startup, Explorer activity, or another system operation. The triggering program is not necessarily the source of the DLL.
Is the file required for Windows itself?
No. It is required for the VirtualBox integration it supports, particularly Shared Folders. Windows can run without VirtualBox Guest Additions, but those integration features may stop working.
What information should I provide if the repair fails?
