wizman.dll errors usually point to a damaged or incomplete Visual Basic 6 installation. wizman.dll is Microsoft’s VB 6 Wizard Manager, not a general Windows component or a file that should be downloaded into System32.

Which fix applies to you
Use the description that matches what you see:
- Visual Basic 6 will not open, or a wizard is missing: repair the original Visual Basic 6 installation.
- The error started after antivirus activity: check Windows Security Protection history before copying anything.
- The file exists under
VB98Wizards, but the add-in is absent: check the per-user VB6 add-in registration. - The message says “The specified module could not be found”:
wizman.dllmay be present while one of its dependencies is damaged or missing. - A third-party application requests the file: identify that application before reinstalling anything. It may have an incorrect dependency on a development tool.
- Windows itself is unstable: use DISM, SFC, or System Restore as secondary repairs.
- You found the file on an unofficial DLL site: do not use it. Obtain the component from licensed Visual Basic 6 installation media.
What wizman.dll is and where it belongs
wizman.dll is the VB 6 Wizard Manager, associated with the WizMan6.Connect Visual Basic add-in. It belongs to the Visual Basic 6 IDE and is normally found here:

Archived file metadata commonly identifies a 6.00.8169 build at approximately 118,784 bytes, or 116 KB, with the product name VB6WizardMgr. That information describes a commonly reported build, not every localized or serviced copy. Do not reject a legitimate installation solely because its version or size differs.
wizman.dll is not established as a Windows-shipped system file. It is also not a Visual C++, .NET, DirectX, or ordinary VB6 runtime file. Microsoft’s VB6 support policy distinguishes the retired VB6 IDE from the still-supported VB6 runtime components.
The VB6 IDE is 32-bit. On 64-bit Windows, it runs through WOW64. A 64-bit Windows installation does not require, or support, a 64-bit replacement for wizman.dll.

Fix 1: Identify the program requesting the file
Before repairing the DLL, find the caller.
- Note the complete error message and the moment it appears.
- Check whether the title bar names Visual Basic 6, an installer, or another application.
- Right-click the program’s shortcut and select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, inspect Target and Start in.
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Escif the error appears during startup. - Select Details, right-click the relevant process, and choose Open file location.
If the caller is VB6.EXE, the original VB6 installation is the primary repair target. If another program requests the file, reinstall or repair that program only after confirming that it legitimately depends on the VB6 IDE.
Do not assume every message means the file itself is absent. Windows can display “The specified module could not be found” when a dependency required by wizman.dll cannot load.
Fix 2: Repair Visual Basic 6 from licensed media
This is the most likely definitive fix.
- Sign in with an administrator account.
- Locate your licensed Visual Basic 6 or Visual Studio 6 installation media.
- Run the original setup program.
- Choose Repair, Modify, or the equivalent maintenance option if it is offered.
- Ensure the Visual Basic 6 IDE and wizard or add-in components are selected.
- Complete setup and restart Windows.
- Check for the file at:
C:Program FilesMicrosoft Visual StudioVB98WizardsWIZMAN.DLL
The exact setup labels vary by edition and installation media. If no repair option is available, rerun setup and reinstall the Visual Basic 6 IDE components rather than installing only the runtime.
Afterward, start Visual Basic 6 from the affected Windows account. Open the relevant wizard or add-in and confirm that the original error no longer appears.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMicrosoft’s VB6 runtime redistribution information concerns runtime files. Installing vbrun60sp6.exe is therefore not a substitute for restoring the IDE’s VB98Wizardswizman.dll.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
An antivirus product may have removed or blocked a genuine old development component, but do not assume every detection is a false positive.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Open the detection associated with
wizman.dll. - Inspect the original path, detection name, publisher information, and scan details.
- Compare the original path with the expected VB6 installation directory.
- Restore or allow the file only when it came from legitimate Visual Basic 6 media and the detection has been verified as a false positive.
Microsoft explains these actions in its Protection History guidance.
If the file came from a DLL download site, do not whitelist it. Remove it, scan the computer, and restore the component from the original licensed installation instead.
Fix 4: Repair the per-user VB6 add-in registration
The Wizard Manager is associated with this per-user registry area:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftVisual Basic6.0AddinsWizMan6.Connect
The SatelliteDllName value is normally:
wizman.dll
This registration is tied to the Windows user profile. As a result, the wizard can work for one user while remaining unavailable for another.
First, run Visual Basic 6 once while signed in as the affected user. If the add-in still does not appear:
- Close Visual Basic 6.
- Press
Win+R, typeregedit, and press Enter. - Select File → Export.
- Export the relevant Visual Basic registry branch as a backup.
- Compare the
AddinsandAddInToolbarkeys with a functioning VB6 user profile. - Export the relevant keys from the working profile.
- Sign in to the affected profile and import them.
- Start Visual Basic 6 again.
Only import registry data from a trusted, matching installation. Do not replace the entire registry branch or copy settings from an unrelated VB6 version.
Fix 5: Check whether a dependency is damaged
If wizman.dll is present but still cannot load, repair the VB6 installation before trying manual registration.
Check the exact file path first:
C:Program FilesMicrosoft Visual StudioVB98WizardsWIZMAN.DLL
Then check whether the error occurs only under one user account. Also review Event Viewer:
- Press
Win+R. - Enter
eventvwr.msc. - Open Windows Logs → Application.
- Look for an error recorded at the same time as the failure.
- Note the failing executable and any named module.
Do not copy unrelated DLLs into the application directory. A dependency mismatch can make the problem worse and can leave Windows loading an incorrect version.
Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 as a routine repair
regsvr32 applies to DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal command for repairing missing or damaged DLLs.

There is no verified basis for prescribing this as a standard wizman.dll fix:
regsvr32 wizman.dll
Running the command from the wrong directory can also produce a misleading “module could not be found” message. Repair the matching VB6 installation and its per-user add-in registration first. Microsoft documents the command’s purpose in its regsvr32 documentation.
Fix 7: Repair Windows components only when Windows is also malfunctioning
Because wizman.dll belongs to VB6 rather than Windows, SFC and DISM are secondary options. Use them when Windows has broader corruption, failed updates, damaged system files, or unexplained application failures.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test Visual Basic 6 again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. These commands do not reinstall the VB6 Wizard Manager if the IDE component was never installed.

System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after a software installation, update, driver change, or cleanup operation.
- Press
Win+R. - Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the failure began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Restart and test the calling application.
Microsoft’s System Restore instructions explain what the process changes. It can roll back system files, registry settings, and installed programs without removing personal documents.
Do not install drivers or enable Windows Features for this DLL
wizman.dll is not a device driver, so Device Manager is not a normal repair path. Open Device Manager only if the same failure began with separate hardware or driver errors.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Similarly, enabling .NET Framework, DirectX, or optional Windows Features will not install the VB6 Wizard Manager. Microsoft’s current VB6 material does not provide a native 64-bit VB6 IDE.
If a separate driver problem is present, update it through Settings → Windows Update → Advanced options → Optional updates → Driver updates, or through the hardware manufacturer’s official support channel. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show the results, while the full version installs updates; it is optional and does not replace repairing the VB6 installation.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Avoid downloading wizman.dll from DLL repositories, “DLL fixer” programs, forums, or file mirrors. A downloaded copy may have:
- Malware or a tampered payload
- The wrong localized or serviced build
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- Missing registration or dependencies
- A path that does not match the calling application
Do not copy it to C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. The correct location is normally beneath the matching VB6 installation directory, and the correct source is licensed Visual Basic 6 installation media.

If the error remains after reinstalling VB6
Work through this checklist:
- Confirm the error’s calling executable and full path.
- Confirm
VB98WizardsWIZMAN.DLLexists. - Confirm the file came from legitimate VB6 media.
- Check Windows Security Protection history.
- Test from the affected Windows user account.
- Compare the
WizMan6.Connectadd-in registration with a working profile. - Check Event Viewer for a missing dependency.
- Confirm the application is 32-bit and is not incorrectly expecting a 64-bit DLL.
- Repair VB6 again using the matching edition and installation media.
- Use System Restore if a recent change triggered the failure.
If VB6 setup itself fails on Windows 10 or Windows 11, permissions and compatibility behavior may be involved. The VB6 IDE is retired, and Microsoft does not provide a current native 64-bit IDE installer. Keep the original media and installation details available rather than replacing individual files from the internet.
FAQ
Is wizman.dll a Windows system file?
No verified evidence establishes it as a Windows-shipped system file. It is a Visual Basic 6 IDE Wizard Manager component.
Is wizman.dll part of the VB6 runtime?
No. The runtime package and the Visual Basic 6 IDE install different components. Installing the runtime alone is not the definitive repair.
Should I copy wizman.dll into System32?
No. VB6 is 32-bit, and the file normally belongs under the VB6 VB98Wizards directory.
Should I use the 32-bit or 64-bit version?
Use the matching 32-bit VB6 component. A 64-bit version of the VB6 IDE is not available.
Why does VB6 work for one user but not another?
The WizMan6.Connect add-in registration is stored under HKEY_CURRENT_USER, so it can be missing from a different Windows profile.
What if the file is present but the error continues?
Treat the message as a possible dependency or registration problem. Check Event Viewer, repair VB6, and compare the affected user’s add-in registration rather than downloading another copy.
Can Windows Update install wizman.dll?
Windows Update does not serve as a replacement for the VB6 IDE’s Wizard Manager. Restore it through the matching Visual Basic 6 installation.
