vdsdyndr.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component associated with the legacy Virtual Disk Service, but Windows 10 and Windows 11 do not automatically need to contain it. If an application reports that vdsdyndr.dll is missing or could not be loaded, repair Windows first, then identify whether an old program is requesting a component it should no longer require.

What this file actually does

vdsdyndr.dll is the VDS Dynamic Volume Provider, Version 1.0, published by Microsoft Corporation. It implements the Dynamic Disk Provider used by Microsoft’s Virtual Disk Service, or VDS, for managing dynamic disks and volumes.

The surrounding VDS components included files such as vds.exe, vdsbas.dll, vdsutil.dll, and vdsldr.exe. Historical Microsoft servicing records identify genuine versions of vdsdyndr.dll in Windows Server 2003 branches, including 5.2.3790.2798, 5.2.3790.2998, 5.2.3790.4139, and 5.2.3790.4408. These details are documented in Microsoft’s Windows Internals reference, KB 938390 archive, and KB 959336 archive.

VDS is a storage-management technology, not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET library, or general game dependency. Microsoft says the VDS COM interface was superseded by the Windows Storage Management API beginning with Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012. That makes a vdsdyndr.dll error on Windows 10 or Windows 11 a reason to investigate the calling program rather than immediately copy a file into a system folder.

Causes by symptom

What you see Most likely explanation Best first action
The error appears during Windows startup A legacy service, storage utility, or damaged Windows component is being loaded Check the error details and repair Windows with DISM and SFC
One old application shows the error The application may bundle or request an obsolete VDS component Repair or reinstall that application from its publisher
The file disappeared after security software acted The file may be in antivirus quarantine, or the detection may be malicious Review quarantine, verify the file, then scan before restoring anything
The error began after an update or failed installation Windows component servicing may be damaged Install pending updates, then run DISM followed by SFC
Only a 32-bit program reports the error The program may be looking in an application directory or using an incompatible legacy dependency Repair the application and verify its supported Windows version
regsvr32 reports that an entry point is missing The command is being used on the wrong type of DLL Stop using regsvr32; repair the component or application instead
Windows 10 or Windows 11 reports the file during setup of an old tool The installer may be obsolete or incorrectly packaged Find the calling installer and obtain a current release
SFC cannot repair the file repeatedly The component store, disk, or Windows installation may have deeper damage Check the CBS log, disk health, System Restore, or Windows repair reinstall

Generic messages can include “The program can’t start because vdsdyndr.dll is missing from your computer,” “vdsdyndr.dll was not found,” “Error loading vdsdyndr.dll,” and “The specified module could not be found.” These messages describe Windows loader failures. They do not identify a particular modern game or application.

Before repairing anything, identify the caller

A Windows error can name the missing file without naming the program that requested it. The caller determines whether Windows repair or application repair is the correct solution.

Check the visible error dialog

Read the title bar and the text above the DLL message. Note the executable name if one appears, such as an installer, storage utility, service, or application. Do not download a DLL simply because an application displays the message.

If the error appears only when opening one program, close it and test another application. If Windows works normally and only one program fails, application repair is more likely than a system-wide missing file.

Check Reliability Monitor

  1. Press Windows key, type reliability.
  2. Select View reliability history.
  3. Look for a red failure on the day the error occurred.
  4. Select the failure and choose View technical details.
  5. Record the Faulting application name, Faulting module name, and application path.

The path is important. A failure under an old program’s installation directory points toward that program. A failure involving Windows services or system paths points toward Windows servicing or a legacy system component.

Check Event Viewer

  1. Right-click Start and select Event Viewer.
  2. Expand Windows Logs.
  3. Select Application.
  4. Choose Filter Current Log in the right-hand pane.
  5. Filter for Error and inspect entries created at the time of the failure.
  6. Open a matching event and record the application name, module name, and faulting path.

Do not treat a generic event as proof that the DLL itself is corrupt. The “specified module could not be found” message can also mean that a dependency of the requested DLL is missing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates, then restart

Start with Windows Update because a pending update may contain a corrected component or complete an interrupted servicing operation.

  1. Open Start and select Settings.
  2. On Windows 11, choose Windows Update. On Windows 10, choose Update & Security, then Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install all available updates.
  5. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
  6. Repeat the test that produced the vdsdyndr.dll error.

If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC. Do not skip directly to copying a DLL from another computer.

Seagate Portable 5TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PS4, & Xbox - 1-Year Rescue Service (STGX5000400), Black

  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

This is the safest primary repair when vdsdyndr.dll is genuinely missing or damaged as part of Windows. Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker because DISM repairs the component store that SFC uses as its source.

Run DISM

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  4. Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
  5. Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Wait for the operation to complete. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
  3. Look for a completion message indicating that the restore operation completed successfully.

A successful DISM run does not necessarily mean the original application will work immediately. Continue with SFC.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run System File Checker

In the same administrator Command Prompt, enter:

sfc /scannow

Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent.

Possible results include:

  • Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected files were not found to be damaged.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart Windows and test again.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. If it still fails, move to the repair-source or recovery steps below.

Restart after SFC completes.

If DISM cannot obtain repair files from Windows Update, Microsoft documents using a repair source that matches the installed Windows edition, language, and architecture:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess

Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the path to a matching Windows repair source. Do not use a source from a different edition, language, or architecture.

Manually hunting through Windows versions and repeating DISM or SFC without knowing what changed can make diagnosis difficult. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported Windows issues; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair features are handled by the full version. It is optional, and Microsoft’s DISM and SFC commands remain the appropriate built-in repair path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 3: Repair or reinstall the program that requests the DLL

If Reliability Monitor or the error dialog identifies one old program, do not alter System32 first. The program may have an incorrect package, an obsolete installer, or a compatibility problem.

Use Windows’ installed-app repair option

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Choose Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  4. Find the application in the list.
  5. Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the application on Windows 10.
  6. Choose Advanced options if available.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Test the application.

If Repair does not help, return to the same screen and select Reset only if you understand that the application may lose its local settings or data.

Use the application’s own installer

Some older programs do not provide a Windows repair button. In that case:

  1. Close the program.
  2. Back up any application-specific data.
  3. Open Control Panel.
  4. Select Programs, then Programs and Features.
  5. Select the affected program.
  6. Choose Change, Repair, or Uninstall, depending on what the installer provides.
  7. Restart Windows if prompted.
  8. Reinstall the program using installation media or a download supplied by its publisher.

If only that program requests vdsdyndr.dll, reinstalling the program remains the definitive fix. Do not assume Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET repair will restore this Windows storage provider.

  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Fix 4: Check Windows Features, but do not enable random legacy components

Windows Features can reveal whether an old application expects an optional Windows component, but enabling unrelated features will not recreate an arbitrary DLL.

  1. Press Windows key and type Turn Windows features on or off.
  2. Open the matching Control Panel result.
  3. Review the checked and unchecked features.
  4. Do not enable a feature merely because its name contains “legacy,” “virtual,” or “storage.”
  5. If the application’s official documentation specifically requires a Windows feature, enable only that feature.
  6. Select OK and restart if Windows requests it.
  7. Test the application again.

For a vdsdyndr.dll error on Windows 10 or Windows 11, the more likely issue is an old installer or application dependency. VDS was superseded by the Windows Storage Management API, so Windows Features should not be used as a substitute for identifying the caller.

Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine and scan the computer

Security software can quarantine a legitimate file, but an unknown DLL in quarantine should not be restored automatically.

Review Microsoft Defender history

  1. Open Start and select Windows Security.
  2. Choose Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review detections created when the error began.
  5. Open a relevant item and inspect its path and action.
  6. If the item is identified as a system file, do not restore it until Windows build, signature, and file location have been verified.
  7. Run Scan options, then choose Full scan.

If malware is suspected, leave the file quarantined while scanning. Use DISM and SFC to restore protected Windows components rather than restoring an untrusted copy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A legitimate Microsoft file should be checked in context. Its location, digital signature, Windows build, and surrounding components matter more than the filename alone.

Fix 6: Check storage drivers and Device Manager

A storage utility or old disk-management program may fail because of an incompatible storage driver, although a driver update will not automatically prove that vdsdyndr.dll belongs on a current system.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Storage controllers.
  4. Also inspect Disk drives and IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers if present.
  5. Right-click the device related to the failure.
  6. Select Properties and open the Driver tab.
  7. Note the provider, date, and version.
  8. Use Update driver, then select Search automatically for drivers.
  9. Restart if Windows installs a driver.
  10. If the problem began immediately after a driver update, open the same tab and select Roll Back Driver if available.

Do not uninstall a storage controller driver casually. If Device Manager shows a warning icon, record the device name and error code before changing it. Obtain drivers through Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer rather than a generic driver site.

Driver hunting across storage controllers can mean guessing which of several versions is stale. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify reported driver issues; its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and a program-specific compatibility problem still requires repairing or reinstalling that program.

Fix 7: Handle Windows Server 2003 or other legacy installations correctly

vdsdyndr.dll is principally associated with Windows Server 2003-era VDS software. If the affected computer is actually running Windows Server 2003 or an application designed for that environment, the correct source is matching installation media or an applicable Microsoft service pack or update.

Do not copy the file from a newer computer. Historical servicing records show that file versions and layouts vary by architecture and service-pack branch.

  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Use this process:

  1. Confirm the exact Windows edition and service-pack level.
  2. Confirm whether the installation is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  3. Use original, matching Windows installation media or a Microsoft-supplied update.
  4. Apply the appropriate servicing update according to Microsoft’s documentation.
  5. Restart and test the storage application.
  6. If the system is business-critical, back up data and consult the administrator before replacing protected system files.

On Windows 10 and Windows 11, an old application may be the real problem. Look for a current release or documented compatibility mode rather than importing a Server 2003 DLL.

System32, SysWOW64, or the application folder

The documented historical location for vdsdyndr.dll is %SystemRoot%System32 on the relevant Windows Server 2003 installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not infer the correct location from the name of the folder:

  • On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains native 64-bit system components.
  • SysWOW64 contains many 32-bit Windows components.
  • A 32-bit application may also search its own installation directory first.
  • A 64-bit computer does not automatically need a copy of this DLL in SysWOW64.

Windows release, architecture, service-pack level, and the calling process all affect the correct layout. There is no safe universal instruction to place vdsdyndr.dll in both folders.

Why downloading or copying the DLL is unsafe

Do not download vdsdyndr.dll from a random DLL site or copy it from another computer as a first-line repair. A loose file may contain malware, belong to the wrong Windows build, use the wrong architecture, lack a valid Microsoft signature, or fail because another dependency is missing.

Copying a DLL can also hide the real problem, such as a damaged component store or an application that was packaged incorrectly. Microsoft presents manual replacement only as an advanced step after SFC identifies a damaged file and the replacement is obtained from a matching trusted source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The safe sources are:

  • Windows Update
  • DISM and SFC
  • Matching Windows installation media
  • A Microsoft service pack or update for the exact legacy release
  • The publisher’s installer for the application that requested the file

Why regsvr32 usually does not apply

regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It registers DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It does not restore a missing Windows provider, repair the component store, or make an incompatible application dependency work.

Do not run this as a routine fix:

regsvr32 vdsdyndr.dll

If it reports that the entry point is missing, that is evidence that the command does not apply to this DLL. Use Windows component repair or repair the calling application instead.

Escalation options when DISM and SFC fail

Frequently asked questions

Is vdsdyndr.dll a legitimate Microsoft file?

Yes. It is the Microsoft VDS Dynamic Volume Provider, Version 1.0, associated with the legacy Virtual Disk Service. A file with that name is not automatically trustworthy, however. Verify its location, signature, and Windows build before restoring it.

Is it part of Windows or a third-party program?

It is a Microsoft Windows component. A third-party program may request it, bundle an old copy, or display the error because it was designed for an older Windows environment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which Windows versions shipped it?

The strongest verified association is with Windows Server 2003 and its servicing branches. Do not assume that every Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, or Windows 11 installation should contain it.

Should I place it in System32 or SysWOW64?

Do not choose a folder based only on whether Windows is 64-bit. The historical documented location is %SystemRoot%System32 for the applicable Windows Server 2003 VDS installation, while modern Windows layouts and application search paths vary.

Will reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET fix it?

Not as a primary solution. vdsdyndr.dll is a VDS storage provider, not one of those runtime packages.

Why does a modern Windows 11 program request it?

The program may be an old installer, a legacy storage utility, an incorrectly packaged application, or a process with another corrupted dependency. Identify the calling executable before changing Windows files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is regsvr32 the fix?

Usually not. regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose the appropriate registration entry point; it does not repair a missing Windows component or replace a damaged component store.

What if the error appears only in one application?

Repair or reinstall that application from its publisher. If the application is obsolete, look for a current release or a documented compatibility solution. Do not assume the whole Windows installation is damaged.

What is the safest first repair?

Install pending Windows updates, restart, run:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

and then:

sfc /scannow

Restart again and retest. If only one old application fails, repair that application even if SFC reports no problems.
