Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutevhdprovider.dll is a Microsoft Windows DISM component, so the safest fix is to repair Windows rather than download the DLL separately. If it is missing or cannot load, Windows image servicing, Setup, Windows Update, WinPE, or recovery operations may fail.
What this file actually does
vhdprovider.dll is the DISM VHD Image Provider. DISM uses it when it works with Windows image files, including .vhd, .vhdx, and .wim images. That includes mounting images, applying images, repairing an offline installation, and servicing Windows during updates or upgrades.

The normal 64-bit path is:
C:WindowsSystem32DismVhdProvider.dll
Microsoft documents DISM support for VHD and VHDX images in its DISM image-management command reference. Microsoft DISM logs also show the provider loading from the System32Dism directory.
This is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, .NET library, game dependency, or general-purpose application DLL. There is no separate official VhdProvider.dll redistributable.

On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains 64-bit system binaries. A 32-bit process may be redirected by Windows to SysWOW64, but that does not mean you should copy a replacement DLL into an application folder. The Windows file-system redirector documentation explains this architecture behavior.
Causes and symptoms
| What you see | Most likely cause | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| “VhdProvider.dll was not found” | Missing or damaged Windows component | Run DISM, then SFC |
| “The specified module could not be found” | The DLL or one of its dependencies is unavailable | Repair the component store and inspect logs |
| “The file could not be loaded or is corrupt” | Damaged system files, storage problems, or an interrupted update | Restart, update Windows, then run DISM and SFC |
| Error during Windows Setup or upgrade | Failed or incomplete servicing operation | Install updates, restart, and retry; use recovery options if necessary |
| Error while mounting a VHD or WIM | DISM provider or image source problem | Repair Windows and verify the image source |

A failed Windows upgrade or temporary setup environment | Repair the installed system rather than copying files into that folder |
| Antivirus reports or quarantines the file | Security software removed or blocked a system component | Verify its Windows path and restore only after checking its Microsoft signature |
Reported messages can include:
This application failed to start because VhdProvider.dll was not found.
The program can't start because VhdProvider.dll is missing from your computer.
The code execution cannot proceed because VhdProvider.dll was not found.
There was a problem starting VhdProvider.dll. The specified module could not be found.
VhdProvider.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.
The file VhdProvider.dll could not be loaded or is corrupt.
The wording does not always identify the real cause. “The specified module could not be found” can mean that the named DLL is present but a dependency or servicing component is missing.
Fix 1: Install updates and restart Windows
An interrupted update or upgrade can leave the component store temporarily inconsistent.
- Open Start and select Settings.
- In Windows 11, select Windows Update. In Windows 10, select Update & Security, then Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Retry the operation that produced the error.
If the problem began immediately after an update:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Update history.
- Choose Uninstall updates.
- Remove only the recent update associated with the problem.
- Restart and test again.
If Windows Update itself fails, use Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Run DISM before System File Checker. DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as its source.
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for the command to finish. Do not close the window just because progress appears to pause.
A successful repair normally ends with a message indicating that the restore operation completed successfully. Then run:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →sfc /scannow
SFC should report that it found no integrity violations or found and repaired corrupted files. Restart Windows and retry DISM, Windows Update, Setup, or the VHD operation that failed.
These are Microsoft’s documented repair commands in Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files.
When you are manually repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what it finds; repairs are performed by the full version, but Windows servicing remains the definitive repair path for this Microsoft component.
If DISM fails, record the exact error code instead of repeatedly running the same command. The next step is usually to provide a matching installation source.
Fix 3: Repair from matching Windows installation media
DISM may report:
The source files could not be found.
This means Windows could not obtain the files required for repair from Windows Update or the local component store. Use installation media that matches the installed Windows edition, language, architecture, and build as closely as possible.
First obtain official media from Microsoft, then identify its drive letter. Suppose the media is mounted as D:.
For an online repair, use:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth ^
/Source:D:sourcesinstall.wim:INDEX ^
/LimitAccess
The INDEX value must correspond to your installed edition. Do not copy the command unchanged until you have identified the correct image index.
If the media contains install.esd rather than install.wim, the source syntax may need to reference that file:
Recommended Free Tools
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth ^
/Source:ESD:D:sourcesinstall.esd:INDEX ^
/LimitAccess
After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Then restart Windows.
For an offline installation from Windows Recovery Environment, the general pattern is:
DISM /Image:C: /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth ^
/Source:WIM:D:sourcesinstall.wim:INDEX ^
/LimitAccess
In WinRE, Windows may not be mounted as C: and the installation media may not be D:. Use the correct drive letters and image index for that machine.
Fix 4: Check the file path, signature, and quarantine
Do not assume every file named vhdprovider.dll is genuine. Check the expected location first.
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to:
C:WindowsSystem32Dism
- Look for
VhdProvider.dll. - Right-click it and select Properties.
- Open Digital Signatures.
- Check that the signer is Microsoft and that Windows reports the signature as valid.
If your antivirus quarantined the file:
- Open the antivirus application.
- Open Quarantine, Protection history, or its equivalent.
- Inspect the detected path.
- Restore the file only if it was in the expected Windows directory and its Microsoft signature can be verified.
- Run DISM and SFC afterward.
- Run a complete malware scan.
Do not permanently disable antivirus protection. If the file keeps disappearing, repair Windows first and investigate the security alert rather than repeatedly downloading replacements.
Fix 5: Check for disk and filesystem corruption
Repeated DISM or SFC failures can indicate storage or filesystem damage.
Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
chkdsk /f C:
Windows may say the volume is in use and ask whether to schedule the check for the next restart. Type Y, press Enter, and restart.

Use System Restore when the error began after a recent installation, cleanup operation, update, or configuration change and a restore point exists.

- Open Start.
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Confirm the affected drives and complete the restore.
- Restart and test Windows servicing again.
If Windows cannot boot normally:
- Start Windows Recovery Environment.
- Select Troubleshoot.
- Open Advanced options.
- Try Uninstall Updates, System Restore, or Command Prompt.
- Use offline DISM if the installed system cannot run DISM itself.
Microsoft describes these choices in its Windows recovery options and System Restore guidance.
If recovery tools cannot repair the installation, perform an in-place repair installation using official Microsoft media. This can replace damaged Windows components while preserving personal files and installed programs when the installation is started from within Windows and the appropriate options are selected. Back up important data first.
Use Reset this PC only when less destructive recovery methods fail or when the installation is badly damaged. Review whether the reset keeps or removes personal files before confirming.
Drivers and Windows Features
vhdprovider.dll is not normally repaired by updating a display, audio, chipset, or storage driver. Do not use Device Manager as the primary fix for a missing DISM provider.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If Device Manager also shows a separate hardware problem:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the device with a warning icon.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
You can also select Uninstall device and restart only when you have a reliable driver source and understand the effect.
When several hardware drivers are stale, manually identifying the correct model and Windows architecture can take longer than the DLL repair itself. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues; installation is handled by the full version, and updating drivers still will not replace the need to repair Windows when DISM is damaged.
Windows Features are also not a normal source for this file. Do not enable or disable random features to recreate it. If a specific optional feature is involved in the failing operation, open Settings, search for Optional features, and repair that feature only when Windows identifies it as the problem.

Why you should not download the DLL
Avoid DLL download archives and files copied from another computer. A replacement can have the wrong Windows build, architecture, signature, or dependencies, and it may leave the component store inconsistent. It can also introduce malicious code.
Do not copy vhdprovider.dll beside a game or unrelated application. The correct location is controlled by Windows servicing. Restore the component through DISM, SFC, matching installation media, an official Microsoft update, or a repair installation.
Does regsvr32 fix it?
Usually, no. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose the registration entry point required by a particular COM component. It is not a general missing-DLL repair command.
Microsoft documents the utility in its regsvr32 command reference, but there is no normal consumer repair procedure that tells you to register VhdProvider.dll. Running:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsregsvr32 VhdProvider.dll
will not recreate a deleted file, repair the component store, fix a mismatched build, or restore missing dependencies. Use DISM and SFC instead.
FAQ
Is vhdprovider.dll safe?
A genuine copy in the Windows DISM directory is a normal Microsoft Windows component. Verify its path and Microsoft digital signature rather than judging it by filename alone.
Why does a game or application mention it?
The application may be launching Windows Setup, an installer, recovery process, or another tool that uses DISM. That does not make vhdprovider.dll a game library. Repair Windows and the calling application separately if both have errors.
Does Windows 11 use the same path?
The documented system location is under %WINDIR%System32Dism. Exact files and build details can vary, so do not treat an old public version list as a complete inventory.
What if DISM itself will not start?
Use WinRE or Windows installation media and repair the offline image. If the provider files needed by DISM are themselves unavailable, online repair may not be possible.
Should I copy a 32-bit DLL into SysWOW64?
No. Windows controls system-directory redirection, and a 32-bit file cannot replace a 64-bit system component. Let Windows restore the correct architecture and build.
What if SFC says it repaired files but the error returns?
Restart and test again. If the problem returns, inspect CBS.log and DISM.log, check storage health, and escalate to System Restore, an in-place repair installation, or Reset this PC after backing up data.
