cnbsm3.dll is a Canon Inkjet Printer Driver component, not a normal Windows system file. If Windows says it is missing, not found, locked, or could not be loaded, the safest solution is to repair or reinstall the complete Canon printer-driver package for your exact printer model.
Do not download this DLL from a random website and copy it into System32. That can install the wrong architecture, an incompatible build, or malware while leaving the damaged printer installation unchanged.

What the cnbsm3.dll error means
You may see wording such as:
- “The program can’t start because cnbsm3.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “There was a problem starting cnbsm3.dll.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading cnbsm3.dll.”
- “cnbsm3.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.”
The exact wording can vary between Windows, printer software and third-party diagnostic databases. The message does not necessarily mean the file was simply deleted.

C:WindowsSystem32spoolDRIVERSx643cnbsm3.dll
The reported failure said the file was being used by another process. That points to a Print Spooler or driver-lock problem rather than a missing file.
The file is not part of Visual C++, DirectX or .NET. Installing those runtimes is not the correct first response.
Fix 1: Restart Windows and clear the print queue
Time needed: 5 minutes
A stuck print job can keep a Canon driver file open and prevent the driver from starting correctly.
- Save your work and restart Windows.
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select your Canon printer.
- Select Open print queue.
- Cancel every pending document.
- Try printing again.
If Windows will not clear the queue:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
text
services.msc
- Press Enter.
- Find Print Spooler.
- Right-click it and select Stop.
- Open File Explorer and enter:
text
C:WindowsSystem32spoolPRINTERS
- Delete the files inside this folder. Do not delete the folder itself.
- Return to the Services window.
- Right-click Print Spooler and select Start.
- Restart Windows and test the printer.
If printing works after this, the immediate problem was probably a locked queue or temporary spooler collision. If the DLL message returns, continue with the driver reinstall.
Fix 2: Remove and reinstall the Canon printer driver
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
This is the most likely permanent fix for cnbsm3.dll. Use Canon’s official support site, select the exact printer model, and choose the package matching your Windows edition and architecture.
Identify your Windows architecture
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Look under System type.
You will typically see a 64-bit or 32-bit Windows installation. Some newer Windows devices use ARM-based architecture. Select the driver Canon provides for your system rather than relying only on the printer’s age.
Do not assume that a DLL found in an x64 folder proves every copy of the file must be 64-bit. Public metadata for this file is inconsistent, and old Canon packages may contain different builds. The driver package and its installer are the authority.

Remove the printer and Canon software
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected Canon printer.
- Select Remove and confirm.
Then remove the related software:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for Canon software associated with the printer.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Select Uninstall.
- Follow the uninstall wizard.
If the Canon program is not listed there:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
text
appwiz.cpl
- Press Enter.
- Select the Canon printer software.
- Select Uninstall or Change.
Microsoft documents both Settings and Control Panel removal methods and recommends using a repair option first when an application provides one. See Microsoft’s uninstall and repair guidance.
Restart Windows after removing the software.
Install the complete package
- Open Canon’s official support site.
- Search for the exact printer model.
- Select Windows 11 or Windows 10 as appropriate.
- Select the correct architecture when Canon provides that choice.
- Download the complete printer-driver package.
- Open the downloaded file.
- Extract it if Windows or the Canon package requests extraction.
- Open the extracted folder.
- Run
Setup.exe. - Follow the installation prompts.
- Connect or power on the printer only when the installer requests it.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
Canon’s documented installation process uses the model-specific package and Setup.exe. Do not copy individual DLL files into a Windows folder. Test a print from Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners after installation.

Success means the Canon printer appears without a warning, the print queue accepts a document, and no cnbsm3.dll message appears.
When manually checking every Canon and Windows driver version is time-consuming, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies the issue, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and the exact Canon package from the manufacturer remains the safest choice for this printer-specific DLL.
Fix 3: Check the printer in Device Manager
Time needed: 10 minutes
Device Manager can expose an incomplete or failed printer installation, although printer packages are often managed through Windows’ printer settings rather than a single device entry.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers.
- Expand Print queues.
- Look for the Canon printer or an entry with a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected entry.
- Select Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
If Windows identifies a driver problem:
- Right-click the affected Canon entry.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select the option to remove the driver package.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the complete Canon package again.
Do not use Update driver to select a random DLL manually. If Windows offers an automatic search, it may find a compatible inbox driver, but Canon’s model-specific package is preferable when available.
If the printer is old and Canon no longer supplies a compatible package, try adding it again through Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners > Add device. Windows may use an inbox printer driver or an IPP-based driver where the printer supports it.
Fix 4: Check Windows Update and roll back a recent driver change
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
A Windows update or Canon software change can expose an older driver conflict.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install applicable updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the printer.
Microsoft recommends Windows Update or the printer manufacturer’s official package for printer-driver updates. See Microsoft’s printer-driver guidance.
If the error began immediately after a driver change:
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Printers or Print queues.
- Right-click the Canon device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver if the button is available.
- Restart Windows.
If rollback is unavailable, remove the current Canon package and install the previous compatible package from Canon’s support page, if Canon provides one.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Antivirus software may quarantine a legitimate driver file, or it may correctly block an untrusted replacement DLL.

- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
cnbsm3.dllor Canon printer software. - Check the file path and detection details.
Restore or allow the file only if all of the following are true:
- It is inside the Canon printer-driver installation path.
- The Canon package was downloaded from Canon’s official support site.
- The file has not been copied from a DLL download website.
- A current antivirus scan does not identify it as malicious.
Microsoft explains that restoring a quarantined threat can cause Defender to detect it again unless it is explicitly allowed. See Microsoft’s Protection History guidance.
When in doubt, do not restore the file. Remove the damaged package and reinstall it from Canon instead. You can also open Virus & threat protection, choose Scan options, and run a Full scan. If malware is suspected, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
DISM and System File Checker repair Windows components. They do not normally restore a third-party Canon printer DLL, so use these commands when other Windows features are also failing.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
text
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
text
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test printing.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. Its System File Checker guidance explains the process.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test Windows and printing again. If it reports no integrity violations, the Canon driver remains the more likely cause. Do not expect SFC to download cnbsm3.dll from Microsoft.
If you repeatedly need to repair Windows components and want a guided scan instead of repeating commands without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can show detected system issues in its free scan; repairs are performed by the full version, and it is not required for reinstalling the Canon driver.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFix 7: Do not use regsvr32 for this driver DLL
Time needed: 2 minutes
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide COM or ActiveX registration through an exported DllRegisterServer function. A printer-driver module is normally installed through the printer package and its INF files.
Running commands such as these is therefore not a general repair:

regsvr32 cnbsm3.dll
regsvr32 C:WindowsSystem32spoolDRIVERSx643cnbsm3.dll
They may produce an error, or they may register something without repairing the printer package. Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation describes the command but does not establish that cnbsm3.dll supports self-registration.
Use Canon’s installer instead.
Fix 8: Use System Restore as a last resort
Time needed: 20–40 minutes
If the problem began directly after installing a driver or printer utility and a clean reinstall fails, System Restore may return drivers, applications and system settings to an earlier restore point without changing personal files.

Likely causes of cnbsm3.dll errors
| Likely cause | Practical response |
|---|---|
| Damaged or incomplete Canon package | Remove the printer software and reinstall the complete model-specific package |
| Old driver after a Windows update | Install the current Canon package or use a compatible inbox driver |
| Print Spooler collision | Clear the queue, restart Print Spooler and reinstall if the lock returns |
| Antivirus quarantine | Verify the path and package, then reinstall rather than restoring an unknown file |
| Wrong architecture | Select the Windows-compatible Canon package rather than mixing 32-bit and 64-bit files |
| Windows component corruption | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Untrusted replacement DLL | Delete it, scan Windows and reinstall from Canon |
The filename alone does not prove that a particular copy is genuine. Check its location, digital signature and antivirus results. A copy found in a game folder or unrelated application directory should be treated as untrusted until verified.
FAQ
Is cnbsm3.dll a Windows file?
No reliable evidence identifies it as a standalone Windows component. It is associated with the Canon Inkjet Printer Driver and should be repaired through the Canon printer package.
Is cnbsm3.dll malware?
The name corresponds to a legitimate Canon driver component, but a filename alone cannot authenticate a file. Verify its location, signature and security scan results.
Should I download cnbsm3.dll separately?
No. Random DLL downloads can contain malware, the wrong build or the wrong architecture. They also do not repair the printer’s driver registration, spooler integration or package dependencies.
Does Visual C++ fix this error?
There is no evidence that installing Visual C++, DirectX or .NET is the appropriate fix. Reinstall the Canon driver first.
Why does the message mention a game?
Generic DLL indexes sometimes display game-style error wording for files without proving that games use them. The available evidence points primarily to Canon printing software and the Windows Print Spooler.
What information should I provide if the problem continues?
Record the exact printer model, Windows version and architecture, complete error wording, file path, whether the message says the file is missing or in use, and whether the file came from Canon’s installer. That information distinguishes a missing package from a spooler lock, quarantine event or incompatible driver.
