Choose a film when a game offers a focused premise or a bounded story that can sustain one cinematic arc. Choose a TV series when its relationships, supporting characters, or world need room to unfold over episodes. Neither format is inherently better: the right choice depends on what the adaptation should preserve—plot, characters, atmosphere, gameplay identity, or the experience of exploring the game’s world.
How to decide which format fits a game
Start by identifying what makes the game worth adapting. Is its appeal a specific plot and a small group of characters, or does it come from a broad setting, evolving relationships, and the player’s experience of moving through that world? Then decide whether the screen version should retell the game’s story or tell a different story using its ideas and setting.

These are practical editorial criteria, not a formula proven to predict critical or commercial success. When a film is the better-shaped choice
A compact premise or distinctive rule
A film can focus on one premise, visual identity, or central conflict instead of covering every feature of a game. The Super Mario Bros. Movie is an example of a game franchise adapted as an animated family film, while Five Nights at Freddy’s was adapted as a horror film. Those projects illustrate different uses of the format; they do not establish that films are inherently more successful. (NBCUniversal, October 27, 2023.)

The BFI describes the film adaptation of Exit 8 as translating the game’s loop and anomaly rules into a cinematic nightmare. That kind of adaptation does not need to reproduce the player’s actions literally; it can make the game’s defining idea legible through film form. (British Film Institute, August 3, 2026.)
A game identity without an established plot
A game need not have a ready-made narrative to support a film. Sony’s Asad Qizilbash said the Gran Turismo games did not have an established story, so the film instead centered on the real story of Jann Mardenborough, a player who became a professional race-car driver. The adaptation drew on the game’s connection to racing rather than trying to turn a missing game plot into a screenplay. (Sony Interactive Entertainment, April 20, 2023.)

When a TV series has more room to work
Relationships and supporting characters
A series can give secondary characters and relationships meaningful screen time without making them detours from the central story. Sony described The Last of Us as having a strong underlying narrative, world, and characters, while noting that adaptation meant deciding what to leave out and what new elements to add. One opportunity was exploring side characters more deeply. (Sony Interactive Entertainment, April 20, 2023.)

In a 2025 Sony feature, Neil Druckmann said season one adapted the entire first game, with viewers receiving that story by the season’s end. He also said: “You don’t need to play the game to enjoy the show. That was always important.” (Sony Interactive Entertainment, April 25, 2025.) This shows one way television can combine a game’s central narrative with screen-specific character work; it does not establish that television is always preferable for story-rich games.

A world that can support a new story
Some adaptations use a game’s setting and identity without retelling its plot. Bethesda’s 2020 announcement described a Fallout television series developed with Amazon Studios and Kilter Films. It illustrates the option of building a screen story around a franchise world rather than treating the game’s events as a script to reproduce. The announcement is about the project’s development and does not establish current season status or viewing availability. (Bethesda, July 2, 2020.)
Faithfulness does not have to mean copying the plot
Before choosing a format, name the part of the game the adaptation must keep. That might be a particular character arc, the atmosphere, a gameplay rule, the world, or the feeling of discovery. A direct retelling is one option, but an original screen story can also preserve what makes a game recognizable. Gran Turismo’s real-world racing story and Fallout’s use of a franchise world show two ways to work from a game without requiring a one-to-one plot transfer.

- Preserve the plot when the game’s story is the main attraction and can be shaped into the intended format.
- Preserve character relationships when the emotional development needs room beyond a compressed central arc.
- Preserve the world or tone when the setting is more adaptable than any single game’s events.
- Preserve a gameplay idea when a rule, loop, or visual language is the game’s defining feature; translate it into screen storytelling rather than assuming it must be reproduced literally.
- Tell a new story when the game has little established narrative or when another protagonist or real-world connection provides a stronger screen structure.
What success figures can—and cannot—tell you
Individual project results do not show that one format succeeds more often. NBCUniversal reported that The Super Mario Bros. Movie had earned over $1.3 billion at the global box office as of its October 2023 article. Sony reported in April 2023 that Uncharted had exceeded $400 million worldwide and that The Last of Us averaged 30.4 million viewers across its first six episodes. These are historical, company-reported figures for different projects and measures; they are not a like-for-like comparison of films and series or a current performance report.
