Build a usable Identity lineup first, then choose E.G.O. for encounter-specific attacks and effects your team can afford.

Prioritize a functional lineup of Identities first: they determine the skills and combat characteristics each Sinner brings to a fight. Add and use E.G.O. to answer a particular encounter need when its effects are useful and your team can afford its resource and Sanity costs. Neither is universally more important; the right investment depends on your roster, team plan, and the enemy you are facing.

What Identities and E.G.O. do

Identities define a Sinner’s combat kit

An Identity is an alternate version of a Sinner, with its own skills and combat characteristics. Identities are specific to individual Sinners, so choosing one changes the tools that character brings into battle. Project Moon describes the system as borrowing an identity from an alternate reality (Project Moon).

E.G.O. adds a situational special attack

E.G.O. is associated with a particular Sinner and can be equipped across that Sinner’s Identities. Its special attacks may provide effects such as changing resistances, but using them depends on having the required Sin resources and spending Sanity. E.G.O. is also Sinner-specific (Project Moon; Steam community guide).

Should you invest in an Identity or its E.G.O. first?

Start with the Identity lineup. Since Identities supply the skills used throughout a fight, the active team needs usable kits before a situational special attack can help. Consider whether each Identity can clash effectively, deal damage suited to the encounter, and withstand the enemy’s attacks. Practical mechanics guidance is available in this Steam community guide.

After the team has a workable foundation, invest in E.G.O. when a particular attack, effect, or resistance change solves a problem your Identities do not handle as well. Think of E.G.O. as an additional tool rather than a substitute for a functional lineup.

How to build around team synergy

Synergy can make a lineup more effective, but it is not a requirement for every fight. Specialist team-building guidance describes groups organized around shared statuses such as Burn or Sinking, shared resources such as Poise or Charge, or recurring Sin resonance. Strong standalone Identities can also work together without following one of those plans (Prydwen team-building guide).

Choose a plan only when it helps with the content ahead. A status-focused team may reward consistent application of that status; another encounter may call for suitable clash performance or resistances instead. When comparing options, ask:

  • Does the Identity’s kit or E.G.O.’s effect address the enemy or mechanic you are facing?
  • Do the skills and resistances suit the fight?
  • Does the option support the team’s status, resource, or Sin-resonance plan?
  • Can the team generate the necessary Sin resources and pay the Sanity cost without taking an unacceptable risk?

When is E.G.O. worth using?

Use E.G.O. when its attack or effect is worth the resources and Sanity it consumes. Its value depends on whether the effect helps with the encounter and whether your team can support the cost. A powerful-looking option is less useful if you cannot generate its required resources or if using it creates a Sanity problem.

Sanity matters to combat outcomes. At low Sanity, Corrosion becomes a risk; specialist guidance warns that it can make a Sinner uncontrollable and may cause friendly fire, depending on the E.G.O. (Prydwen E.G.O. guide). Weigh that possibility against the benefit of using the attack rather than treating every available E.G.O. as an automatic choice.

Identity Uptie and E.G.O. Threadspin are separate investments

Identities are leveled and promoted through Uptie; E.G.O. has its own Threadspin progression. These are separate upgrade tracks, not interchangeable ways to improve the same item (Project Moon; Steam community guide).

Before spending upgrade materials, identify where the team’s actual shortfall lies. If the active lineup needs stronger or more suitable kits, focus on the relevant Identity progression. If a particular E.G.O. is central to your encounter plan, consider its Threadspin track. The choice is an opportunity-cost decision: prioritize the improvement that supports the fight you want the team to handle.

Why patch and encounter context matter

There is no supported universal ranking that makes E.G.O. always outrank Identities, or the reverse. Advice can become stale as encounters and game updates change. Project Moon’s official Steam feed showed version 1.116.1 notices and October 2026 Canto X encounter updates as of October 7, 2026; check the live version and encounter details before relying on patch-specific recommendations (Project Moon announcements on Steam).
