A video game convention is a broad event built around games and gaming community; an esports tournament is a competition for a specific game, governed by defined rules and a format. A convention can include tournaments, but a tournament can also run separately or online.
What’s the difference between a gaming convention and an esports tournament?
The simplest distinction is scope. A convention is described by the range of things attendees can do and experience. A tournament is described by how competitors play, advance, and produce a result.

| Question | Video game convention | Esports tournament |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Bring people together around games, gaming culture, and community. | Determine competitive results in a particular game. |
| Typical scope | May combine exhibits, panels, demos, vendors, guests, cosplay, workshops, casual play, and competitions. | Centers on matches and competition-related activities. |
| Who participates? | Attendees may take part in different activities, subject to event access and activity rules. | Players or teams enter through a defined registration or selection process; others may attend as spectators if the event allows it. |
| How are outcomes determined? | Only its competitive activities need tournament rules and results. | Rules and a format govern matches and determine results. |
These are practical descriptions, not mutually exclusive labels. Gen Con describes a consumer and trade event dedicated to gaming culture and community, with tournaments alongside exhibits, appearances, games, workshops, seminars, and art shows (Gen Con Corporate Fact Sheet). The ESA, ISFE, ESA-C, and IGEA guide describes esports competitions as organized for a specific game, with a concrete format, rules, and a system for selecting or registering players or teams (What are esports?, 2022).
Can a video game convention have esports tournaments?
Yes. A tournament can be one activity within a larger convention. GameACon’s 2026 event description includes a vendor hall, artist alley, demos, panels, Q&A, cosplay, and live tournaments (GameACon Rules & Guidelines). The tournament has its own competitive rules; its presence does not turn every other convention activity into esports.
#1 Best Overall
- Comfort is King: Comfort’s in the Cloud III’s DNA. Built for gamers who can’t have an uncomfortable headset ruin the flow of their full-combo, disrupt their speedrun, or knocking them out of the zone.
- Audio Tuned for Your Entertainment: Angled 53mm drivers have been tuned by HyperX audio engineers to provide the optimal listening experience that accents the dynamic sounds of gaming.
- Upgraded Microphone for Clarity and Accuracy: Captures high-quality audio for clear voice chat and calls. The mic is noise-cancelling and features a built-in mesh filter to omit disruptive sounds and LED mic mute indicator lets you know when you’re muted.
- Durability, for the Toughest of Battles: The headset is flexible and features an aluminum frame so it’s resilient against travel, accidents, mishaps, and your ‘level-headed’ reactions to losses and defeat screens.
The overlap can work in the other direction, too: a competition-centered event may offer spectator and community activities alongside matches. Evo describes its 2026 event as a three-day celebration of competitive fighting games and also refers attendees to its schedule, side activities, vendors, and venue details (Evo 2026).
Are esports tournaments always held in person?
No. The 2022 esports guide includes both in-person and online competitions (What are esports?). A tournament’s defining features are its game, rules, format, and participant process—not whether competitors share a venue.

How to tell what an event actually offers
The event name alone does not establish what you can attend or do. Before making plans, check the organizer’s current schedule and rules for:
- Which games and activities are included, and when they run.
- Whether entry requires a ticket, separate registration, or selection.
- Who is eligible to compete, including any age or other requirements.
- The tournament format, rules, and whether spectators can watch.
- Which areas or activities are open to all attendees and which are ticketed.
For example, GameACon distinguishes access to public areas from ticketed activities and says tournament entry and rules are handled per tournament (GameACon Rules & Guidelines). Those details belong to the specific event and edition, so confirm them with its organizer.

What organizers should know about tournament permissions
Hosting a tournament is a separate question from whether an event is a convention or an esports competition. A game publisher’s rules may limit how its game can be used, and those rules can depend on the event’s details. WIPO’s 2026 guidelines identify factors organizers should define, including dates, territory, commercial character, prize pool and format, participants, fees, sponsorship, merchandising, and broadcast (WIPO Guidelines for Esports Tournament Organizers).
Publisher policies are not interchangeable. Nintendo’s community tournament guidelines, published in 2023 and effective November 15, 2023, describe permissions for small-scale, not-for-profit events that meet its stated conditions (Nintendo Community Tournament Guidelines). Organizers should check the current policy for each game rather than assume one publisher’s terms apply to another.
