videoframe.dll is an Adobe Media Core component used by Adobe applications, not a normal Windows system file. If videoframe.dll is missing, cannot be loaded, or crashes an application, repair the Adobe product that reports the error instead of copying a loose DLL into a Windows folder.
Identify the Adobe installation first
The affected application is usually named in the error message or visible from the full file path. Adobe crash reports have shown VideoFrame.dll in Premiere Pro, Media Encoder, and After Effects folders. Related Adobe products can also use the component, including Audition, Photoshop, Animate, Captivate, and Photoshop Elements.

The file is normally stored beside the Adobe executable or inside an Adobe Support Files directory. It is not established as a Windows component that should normally reside in System32 or SysWOW64.
Public file metadata lists 64-bit Adobe Media Core records such as version 12.1.0.0 and 12.1.0.182. Other Adobe releases and older 32-bit products can contain different builds. A newer or similarly named DLL is not automatically compatible with your installed application.

Before changing anything, record:
- The exact Adobe product named by the error
- The complete path shown
- Whether the message says missing, failed to load, corrupt, or not designed to run on Windows
- Whether the problem began after an update, rollback, cleanup, antivirus alert, disk problem, or restored installation
- Whether the application is an older CS-era release or a current Creative Cloud installation
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the affected Adobe application
A missing or damaged Adobe file is most often caused by an incomplete installation, failed update, rollback, or quarantine event. Reinstalling the product through Adobe’s own installer restores the matching files, architecture, and dependencies together.
- Close all Adobe applications.
- Open the Creative Cloud desktop application.
- Select Apps.
- Select All Apps.
- Find the affected product.
- Select the More actions button beside it.
- Choose Uninstall.
- When prompted, choose whether to retain or remove preferences.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Creative Cloud again and install the same Adobe product.
If the application offers an update instead of an uninstall, install the update first. A repair or update can correct an incomplete component without removing preferences, but a complete uninstall and reinstall is more reliable when the file is absent or the installation is mismatched.
If Creative Cloud itself will not open, use Adobe’s official Creative Cloud desktop uninstaller and choose its Repair option if available. Restart after the repair and try the application again. If Creative Cloud remains damaged, uninstall and reinstall the Creative Cloud desktop application. For persistent corrupted-installation problems, Adobe provides its Cleaner Tool, but use it only after closing Adobe applications and following Adobe’s removal instructions.

Launch the exact product named in the original error. Then open a project or media file that previously triggered the problem. The repair worked if the application starts without the DLL message and the error path no longer appears in a crash report.
If Premiere Pro works but Media Encoder or After Effects still fails, repair those products separately. Multiple Adobe installations can contain different VideoFrame.dll copies, and reinstalling one product does not necessarily repair another.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine an Adobe file during an update or after an installation changes. Do not restore a file automatically just because its name is familiar.

- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent events involving the Adobe installation directory.
- Expand an event to see the detected path and action.
- Confirm that the path belongs to the Adobe product you installed.
- If the file was installed by a genuine Adobe installer and the detection is clearly a false positive, choose Restore or Allow on device, if Windows offers that action.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the Adobe application.
If the detection identifies a real threat, leave the item quarantined. Do not restore it. Instead, uninstall the affected Adobe product, run a complete security scan, restart Windows, and reinstall Adobe from its official installer.
If the file returns to quarantine immediately after reinstalling, do not keep restoring it. Record the detection name and full path, update Windows Security, and investigate the security event before making another exception.
Fix 3: Check architecture and version mismatches
A 64-bit copy of VideoFrame.dll cannot replace the 32-bit copy required by an older application, and a file from one Adobe release may not work with another. This is especially important when an older CS-era product and a current Creative Cloud product are installed together.
To check the application architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the Adobe application.
- Open its More options menu and review the available installation or version information.
- Check the Adobe installation directory in File Explorer.
Program Filescommonly contains 64-bit applications, whileProgram Files (x86)commonly contains 32-bit applications.
The folder location is a clue, not absolute proof. Use the application’s own installer to replace its files. Do not download a 32-bit or 64-bit DLL based only on the Windows installation architecture.
If the error names VCRUNTIME140.dll, MSVCP140.dll, DirectX, or another dependency, address that dependency separately. Do not assume it is fixed by reinstalling VideoFrame.dll.

If VideoFrame.dll appears in a crash report but the file exists, the DLL itself may not be missing or corrupt. Adobe may be crashing while processing media, loading a plug-in, reading a cache, or initializing a GPU feature.

For Premiere Pro:
- Close Premiere Pro.
- Hold Ctrl while launching Premiere Pro.
- Keep holding the key until the reset dialog appears.
- Choose the option to reset preferences.
- If offered, clear the media cache and reset the plug-in loading cache.
- Continue launching the application.
After Premiere Pro opens, update or temporarily remove third-party effects and export plug-ins. Test with a new blank project before opening the original project. If a new project works but one project crashes, the project media, codec, or plug-in may be the real trigger.
For After Effects or another Adobe product, use that application’s own preference-reset procedure and temporarily disable third-party plug-ins. If the application starts after the reset, restore settings gradually rather than copying the entire old preference folder back.
Fix 5: Update or reinstall the graphics driver
A crash reported in VideoFrame.dll can involve media decoding, GPU acceleration, or an outdated display driver. This is more relevant when the application opens briefly, crashes while initializing MediaCore, or fails when importing or previewing media.
To check the driver manually:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows after installation.
- If the problem began immediately after a driver update, open the adapter’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and choose Roll Back Driver if available.
For a clean vendor installation, download the driver only from the graphics manufacturer’s official support channel. If the driver appears damaged, choose Uninstall device in Device Manager, restart Windows, and install the correct driver for the adapter.
Manually checking graphics, chipset, and audio driver versions can mean hunting through several vendor pages and guessing which component is stale. Reinstalling the Adobe application remains the definitive fix when its own files are missing.
Fix 6: Install Visual C++ only when the error names it
The Visual C++ Redistributable is not a general repair for VideoFrame.dll. Use it when the complete error specifically names a Microsoft runtime such as VCRUNTIME140.dll or MSVCP140.dll, or when Adobe’s installer reports a damaged runtime prerequisite.
- Open Microsoft’s Latest Supported Visual C++ Redistributable Downloads page.
- Download the package matching the affected application.
- Use
VC_redist.x64.exefor a 64-bit application. - Use
VC_redist.x86.exefor a 32-bit application. - If both 64-bit and 32-bit Adobe programs are installed, both packages may be required.
- Run the installer.
- Choose Repair if it is already installed.
- Restart Windows.
- Test Adobe again.
Do not install a runtime from a DLL download page, and do not claim the runtime repaired VideoFrame.dll unless the original error specifically identified that dependency.

Fix 7: Repair Windows components when Windows itself is damaged
VideoFrame.dll is associated with Adobe rather than protected Windows system files. Therefore, System File Checker normally will not restore it. DISM and SFC are appropriate when Windows corruption is suspected, Windows Installer is failing, or the Adobe installer cannot run.
Install pending Windows updates and restart first. Then open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Run the Adobe repair or reinstall again.
DISM should run before SFC. If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, test the Adobe installer. If it reports no integrity violations, that does not prove the Adobe DLL is healthy. If both commands fail, copy the exact result and repair Windows installation issues before retrying Adobe.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed makes troubleshooting difficult. What not to do
- Do not download
videoframe.dllfrom a random DLL website. - Do not copy the file into
C:WindowsSystem32orC:WindowsSysWOW64. - Do not replace a 32-bit Adobe file with a 64-bit copy.
- Do not mix files from different Adobe releases.
- Do not edit the registry to register this application DLL.
- Do not repeatedly restore an antivirus detection without validating the installer and file signature.
- Do not assume that a crash naming
VideoFrame.dllproves the DLL is defective.
regsvr32 is for DLLs designed as COM or ActiveX self-registering components. VideoFrame.dll is an application library, so this command is generally irrelevant:
regsvr32 VideoFrame.dll
It may return an error stating that DllRegisterServer was not found. That result does not repair the Adobe installation.
Frequently asked questions
Should videoframe.dll be in System32?
Normally, no. The file should usually be inside the Adobe application’s installation directory or an Adobe support-files folder. The correct location depends on the product and release.

Is videoframe.dll a Windows file?
There is no reliable evidence that it is a standard Windows component. It is associated with Adobe Media Core and Adobe applications.

Can I copy the file from another computer?
Do not do that. The other computer may have a different Adobe product, release, architecture, plug-in set, or dependency configuration. Reinstall the affected application instead.
What if the file exists but Adobe still crashes?
Reset preferences and caches, test without third-party plug-ins, update the graphics driver, and try a new project. A crash inside VideoFrame.dll does not by itself prove that the file is missing or corrupted.
What if reinstalling one Adobe product breaks another?
Repair each affected product using its own installer. Multiple Adobe versions can keep separate, incompatible copies of the component.
What if every reinstall fails?
Capture the full error path, Adobe product and version, Windows version, application architecture, antivirus event, and installer logs. Test under a new Windows user profile and check drive health. Use System Restore only when the failure clearly began after a recent system change and a suitable restore point exists.
