Which fix applies to you
Use this list to choose the shortest route:
- The touchpad stopped working after Windows was reinstalled or updated: reinstall the exact touchpad driver from the laptop manufacturer.
- Windows Security recently detected or removed the file: check Protection history before reinstalling anything.
- The touchpad works, but a popup appears at sign-in: repair the ALPS package, then look for an obsolete startup entry.
- The error began after a driver or application change: use Windows Update, Device Manager, or System Restore.
- Several Windows programs also report missing or damaged files: repair Windows components with DISM and SFC.
- You found a standalone
aptouch.dlldownload: do not copy it toSystem32or register it. Use the complete OEM driver package instead.
What aptouch.dll is
aptouch.dll is reported as the ALPS Touch Injection module, a component associated with ALPS pointing-device and multi-touch touchpad software. It is normally installed as part of a complete laptop touchpad driver package alongside other ALPS files.
It is not a normal Windows system DLL and should not normally be expected in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. It is also not established as a Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable file.

- Compatible Model: HP 15-EF 15-DY 15S-EQ 15S-FQ.
- Compatible P/N: For L63599-001
- For SB459A22HA .
- Package include: 1x Touchpad.
The exact package depends on the laptop manufacturer, model, and Windows architecture. Some ALPS driver releases include separate 32-bit and 64-bit driver trees, so copying a file from another computer can produce a second error rather than repair the first one.
Common messages include:
- “There was a problem starting aptouch.dll.”
- “Error loading aptouch.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because aptouch.dll was not found.”
- “aptouch.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
“The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency used by the ALPS module is missing. That is why reinstalling the complete driver is safer than replacing only the named DLL.
Fix 1: Reinstall the correct ALPS touchpad driver
This is the most likely and most reliable fix.
Identify the laptop model
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
msinfo32. - Press Enter.
- Note System Manufacturer and System Model.
- Also note whether the system is 64-bit under System Type.
You can also find the model on the laptop’s label or in the firmware setup screen. For a business laptop, the manufacturer’s service tag may be required.
Download the driver safely
- Open the laptop manufacturer’s official support application or support page.
- Search using the exact model or service tag.
- Select your installed Windows version.
- Open the Mouse, Touchpad, Input, or Chipset driver category.
- Download the ALPS or touchpad package intended for that exact model.
- Save the installer locally. Do not download an individual DLL.
If the manufacturer offers several touchpad packages, use the one listed for your model rather than choosing by filename alone. A package for a different laptop can contain a different ALPS version, architecture, or installation configuration.
Install it
- Close open applications.
- Right-click the downloaded installer.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Follow the setup prompts.
- Restart Windows, even if the installer does not require it.
- Test the touchpad and reopen the program that displayed the error.
If the installer refuses to run, uninstall the existing touchpad package first:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the ALPS or touchpad software.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart.
- Run the correct OEM installer again.
Do not uninstall the touchpad device from Device Manager unless the manufacturer’s instructions call for it. Removing the wrong device can leave you without touchpad input until Windows redetects it.

Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of checking several driver categories and matching versions; its free scan shows what it identifies, while driver installation through the full version is optional. For an aptouch.dll error, the laptop manufacturer’s exact touchpad package remains the definitive repair.

Fix 2: Check Device Manager and Windows Update
Windows may have installed a generic touchpad driver while leaving the ALPS software incomplete.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Mice and other pointing devices.
- Also inspect Human Interface Devices.
- Look for an ALPS Touchpad, HID-compliant touch pad, or a device with a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the relevant device and select Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
If the device is disabled, right-click it and select Enable device.
To check for a driver update:
- Right-click the touchpad device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
If Windows says the best driver is already installed but the error remains, continue with the manufacturer’s package. Device Manager may not restore the ALPS control software, startup components, or supporting files.
Check optional driver updates
On Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Advanced options.
- Choose Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates.
- Install a relevant touchpad or input driver.
- Restart.
Windows 10 uses a similar path under Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update → View optional updates, when optional updates are available.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine a legitimate driver component, although you should not assume a detection is false.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
aptouch.dll, an ALPS installer, or the touchpad driver. - Expand the entry and review its original path, detection name, and source.
- If the file came from the laptop manufacturer’s installer and its safety is confirmed, use the available Restore action.
- Reinstall the complete OEM driver afterward.
Do not restore an arbitrary DLL merely because its filename matches. If the file came from an untrusted download, remove it and run a full scan instead.

Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when other Windows files are also failing, or when the driver installer reports that Windows components are damaged. They will not recreate an absent third-party ALPS driver.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin).
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the complete ALPS installer again if
aptouch.dllis still missing.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows files against that repaired store. Neither command is a replacement for the manufacturer’s touchpad package.

Fix 5: Remove a stale ALPS startup reference
If the touchpad works normally but the popup appears during login, an old ALPS utility may still be launching after the driver was removed.
First reinstall the correct driver as described above. If the popup remains:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for an ALPS, touchpad, pointing-device, or unknown entry.
- Right-click it and choose Open file location if available.
- Check whether the path points to an old or missing installation.
- Disable the entry temporarily.
- Restart and check whether the popup disappears.
You can also check Settings → Apps → Installed apps for an obsolete ALPS utility and uninstall it through its normal uninstaller.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not delete random registry entries or remove files from System32. If the startup entry belongs to an unknown program, inspect its executable path and digital signature before changing it.

Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent driver change
Use System Restore if the error began immediately after a driver installation, Windows update, or system change.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not replace personal files, but it can remove a recently installed driver or application. Afterward, install the correct model-specific touchpad driver rather than allowing the old package to return.
Why regsvr32 is usually wrong
Do not run:
regsvr32 aptouch.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that explicitly provide a self-registration function such as DllRegisterServer. An ALPS touchpad support DLL is not automatically repaired by registering it. The driver installer must place the correct files, services, driver configuration, and related entries in their expected locations.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If regsvr32 reports that the module could not be loaded, that does not prove the file belongs in a Windows system folder. It usually confirms that manual registration is not the appropriate repair.
Do not download aptouch.dll by itself
Random DLL download sites pages are risky because the file may contain malware, belong to a different ALPS release, use the wrong architecture, or lack the companion driver files needed by the touchpad. Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder can create version conflicts and still leave the original driver installation broken.
Use the laptop manufacturer’s official driver page, its recovery environment, or Windows Update instead. The installer determines whether the system needs the 32-bit or 64-bit files. Do not manually install both.

FAQ
Is aptouch.dll a Windows file?
No reliable evidence identifies it as a standard Windows component. It is associated with an ALPS touchpad driver package supplied for particular laptop models.
Is aptouch.dll part of Visual C++?
There is no verified evidence that the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable supplies this file. Do not install unrelated runtimes solely because a DLL error appeared.
Should I copy aptouch.dll into System32?
No. The correct repair is the complete ALPS driver package for the exact laptop model.
Is aptouch.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
That depends on the driver release and laptop configuration. Use the architecture selected by the OEM installer rather than copying files manually.
Why does Windows say the specified module cannot be found?
The named file may be missing, or one of its dependencies may be missing. Reinstalling the complete driver handles both possibilities more safely than replacing one DLL.
