For a normal Vintage Story survival world in which players spread out, the Vintage Story Wiki gives a conservative planning estimate of 1 GB of base RAM plus 300 MB per player, with four CPU threads recommended and roughly 1 GHz of base CPU frequency plus 100 MHz per player. These are planning figures, not guaranteed minimums or performance promises. World activity, mods, settings, operating-system overhead and other workloads can change what your server actually needs.
Monthly paid hosting and self-hosting on your own Windows or Linux machine are both viable. The right choice depends less on a headline player limit than on allocated resources, storage, backups, network access, maintenance and cost. This guide turns the official estimates into practical sizing and setup decisions.

How much RAM does a Vintage Story server need?
Use the formula 1,000 MB + 300 MB for every connected player as an initial planning calculation. The base amount covers server and world overhead in the guide’s assumed scenario; the per-player amount scales the estimate as more people are active.
| Players | Calculation | Planning estimate |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | 1,000 MB + (0 × 300 MB) | 1.0 GB |
| 1 | 1,000 MB + (1 × 300 MB) | 1.3 GB |
| 4 | 1,000 MB + (4 × 300 MB) | 2.2 GB |
| 8 | 1,000 MB + (8 × 300 MB) | 3.4 GB |
| 12 | 1,000 MB + (12 × 300 MB) | 4.6 GB |
| 20 | 1,000 MB + (20 × 300 MB) | 7.0 GB |
These values are arithmetic applications of the Wiki’s formula, not tested capacities. Leave additional room when the host also runs a desktop, monitoring software, a voice server, backups or other games. Mods, intensive automation, unusual settings and players exploring many areas can all move real usage above the estimate. A provider advertising only a player count without stating the RAM allocation is not giving you enough information to judge capacity.
RAM allocation versus total host RAM
The amount assigned to the game is not the same as the machine’s total installed memory. The performance guide advises having at least 4 GB of system RAM free before starting a server. Treat that as host headroom guidance: the operating system and other processes still need memory, and a server that forces the host into swapping can perform badly even when its nominal allocation matches the formula.

The Wiki labels four CPU threads recommended. It also gives a rough frequency calculation of 1 GHz base plus 100 MHz per player.
| Players | Frequency calculation | Planning figure |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1.0 GHz + 0.1 GHz | 1.1 GHz |
| 4 | 1.0 GHz + 0.4 GHz | 1.4 GHz |
| 8 | 1.0 GHz + 0.8 GHz | 1.8 GHz |
| 12 | 1.0 GHz + 1.2 GHz | 2.2 GHz |
| 20 | 1.0 GHz + 2.0 GHz | 3.0 GHz |
Do not read the table as a guarantee that any processor at the listed clock speed will deliver a particular tick rate. Clock frequency, thread availability, processor architecture, sustained performance, background load and the world’s activity all affect the result. Four threads is the guide’s recommendation, while the frequency line is only a rough planning indicator.

Operating systems, runtimes and CPU architecture
Windows and Linux
The dedicated-server guide lists Windows and Linux as operating-system options. Linux users should follow the instructions for the server’s architecture and confirm the game version before installing a runtime.
Linux .NET runtime by Vintage Story version
| Vintage Story server version | Runtime identified by the guide |
|---|---|
| 1.22.0 or later | .NET 10 |
| 1.21.0 | .NET 8 |
| Earlier than 1.21.0 | .NET 7 |
Runtime requirements change with game releases. Check the exact server version first; installing a different runtime can prevent the server from launching or create confusing compatibility errors. The table reflects the guide’s current version distinctions, not a permanent rule for future releases.

ARM64 is experimental
The guide describes ARM64 server support as experimental. It also states that coded mods using Harmony patching will not work on ARM64 under the library-availability conditions described there. If your world depends on such mods, verify current compatibility before selecting an ARM-based host. An x64 machine is the safer assumption when mod compatibility is more important than the hardware platform.
Storage and performance headroom
The performance guide recommends keeping the savegame on an SSD. That is a performance recommendation, not a stated capacity, interface or model requirement. Ensure the drive has enough room for the world, logs, backups and ordinary operating-system growth rather than treating the game’s memory estimate as a storage figure.
The same guide discusses two configuration levers when the server lacks CPU headroom:

Networking: port 42420, firewalls and outside players
The dedicated-server guide identifies 42420 as the default port. Its Linux instructions show allowing both TCP and UDP on that port where needed. A server that works for a player on the same local network may still be unreachable from the internet.
- Allow the required TCP and UDP traffic in the host’s firewall.
- If players connect from outside your home network, configure the router’s port forwarding for 42420 to the server computer’s local address.
- Check whether your internet service uses carrier-grade NAT or another arrangement that prevents inbound connections; router rules alone cannot overcome that limitation.
- Coordinate the port and connection address with players, and avoid exposing unrelated administration services.
Managed hosts normally handle the network edge for you, but you should still confirm which port players use and whether the service supplies a reachable address.
Self-hosting versus monthly paid hosting
The official guide says monthly paid hosting is an option and that setting up a server on personal equipment is not terribly difficult. It does not compare providers, plans, prices or support levels, so any provider-specific promise requires separate, current verification.
| Decision area | Self-hosting | Paid hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Resource control | You control the machine and can account for other workloads. | Capacity depends on the plan’s explicitly allocated RAM and CPU performance. |
| Version and runtime | You install and maintain the version and, on Linux, the matching runtime. | Confirm that the host supports your required Vintage Story version, operating system and runtime. |
| Storage | You choose the drive; use SSD storage for the savegame as recommended. | Confirm storage type, usable space and whether expansion is possible. |
| Backups and restore | You must design, schedule and test them. | Check whether backups are included, how often they run and how restoration works. |
| Network and uptime | You handle port forwarding, firewall rules, electricity and internet outages. | Check the network arrangement, stated uptime policy and outage handling. |
| Maintenance and support | You troubleshoot updates, mods and hardware yourself. | Support quality and response times vary; verify them before subscribing. |
| Cost | Hardware, electricity and your maintenance time are the main variables. | A recurring monthly charge; compare the complete plan rather than a headline price. |
When self-hosting fits
- You already have a machine that can keep at least 4 GB of system RAM free while the server runs.
- You can keep the save on an SSD and maintain the operating system.
- You are comfortable configuring a firewall and, when necessary, router forwarding.
- You can provide the uptime your group expects and maintain your own backups.
When paid hosting fits
- You want the server online without leaving a personal computer powered on.
- You prefer a managed network endpoint and support channel.
- You need a clear backup-and-restore workflow or an easy way to change allocated resources.
- You have checked version, mod, runtime, storage and pricing details in the current plan documentation.
If you decide on a managed server, Godlike.Host offers Vintage Story server hosting with up to three free backups a day with restore, SFTP access and a Pterodactyl-based panel where you can upgrade or downgrade your plan with prorated billing. See the current plans for the RAM each one allocates and compare it with the formula above.

A practical setup sequence
- Choose the server version. Record the exact Vintage Story release before selecting a Linux runtime or checking mod compatibility.
- Estimate active players. Apply 1 GB plus 300 MB per player, then add room for the operating system, other services and unusual workloads.
- Confirm CPU capacity. Start with the four-thread recommendation and use the frequency estimate only as a rough comparison between candidate machines.
- Select Windows or Linux. On Linux, match the runtime to the version table and architecture instructions.
- Use SSD storage. Place the savegame on solid-state storage and reserve room for logs and backups.
- Prepare network access. Allow TCP and UDP for port 42420 where required, and configure router forwarding if outside players need access.
- Launch with headroom. Verify that at least 4 GB of system RAM remains free on the host before starting the server.
- Test with the real workload. Have the expected players explore and use the world, then watch memory pressure, CPU saturation, connection stability and tick behavior.
- Tune carefully. If CPU headroom is inadequate, consider lowering
MaxChunkRadiusor increasingTickTime, checking current-version documentation first.
Common sizing mistakes and fixes
Treating the formula as a hard minimum
The 1 GB plus 300 MB figure assumes a particular normal survival-world pattern. A heavily modded or unusually active world may need more; a lightly used world may need less. Start from the estimate, monitor the actual server and adjust deliberately.
Buying a plan with an unspecified CPU
“Four cores” or a player-count limit does not tell you the processor’s sustained performance. Ask what CPU resources are allocated, whether they are shared, and how much RAM is dedicated to the instance.
Using the wrong Linux runtime
A runtime mismatch is avoidable: identify whether the server is 1.22.0-or-later, exactly 1.21.0, or earlier, then install the corresponding runtime identified by the guide.
Ignoring host memory
A server allocation that fits the formula can still starve the machine if the host is running other applications. Check free system RAM before launch and during busy sessions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPutting the save on a slow disk
The performance guide specifically recommends SSD savegame storage. Moving the save to an SSD is a more evidence-based first step than guessing at a larger memory allocation when disk activity is the bottleneck.

Assuming ARM64 supports every mod
ARM64 support is experimental, and Harmony-patching coded mods have the compatibility limitation described by the guide. Audit the mod list before committing to ARM hardware.
Opening only one network protocol
The Linux networking instructions discuss both TCP and UDP for the default port. Check the firewall and router rules for the protocols your setup requires instead of assuming a single rule is sufficient.
What the official numbers do—and do not—establish
The Wiki provides useful planning guidance but no named benchmark dataset, publication year or provider comparison. It does not establish a guaranteed player count for a given processor, a universal minimum amount of RAM, a required SSD capacity, hosting prices or a particular company’s uptime. Those details must be verified for the exact version, host and workload you intend to run.
