The Nelsonic The Legend of Zelda 8321 combines a digital watch with a purpose-built LCD action game. It has its own weapons, enemies, caves and boss encounters, but it is not a miniature version of the full NES Zelda.
What are vintage video game watches?
They are wristwatches built to do more than tell time: the Nelsonic Zelda 8321 has a digital time display and an LCD game mode in the same device. Its instruction manual documents hours, minutes, a PM indicator and an alarm alongside the game controls. A specialist watch catalog records the model as a 1989 release and describes the case back as marked “M. Z. Berger Co.” and “Nintendo of America” (Digital-Watch.com catalog record).

Nelsonic also made other Nintendo-themed game watches. A Super Mario Wiki list includes Super Mario Bros. (1989), Super Mario Bros. 3 (1990), Super Mario World (1991) and Donkey Kong (1994); these are described as simplified LCD adaptations (Super Mario Wiki list).
How does the Nelsonic Zelda watch work?
Entering the game
In the 8321 manual, S1 switches from normal time mode to game mode; S2 starts play. The four K controls move Link up, down, left and right. The watch also has sound effects and a mute option. The manual treats timekeeping and the alarm separately from gameplay (Nelsonic 8321 instruction manual).

Clearing caves and levels
Link begins without weapons and must collect the appropriate weapon to fight enemies. The manual describes four levels, each with four caves, for 16 caves total. At the end of a cave, a key appears; Link must reach the door within 10 seconds. The manual says score penalties follow if that window expires. A boss appears at the end of each level, and defeating it earns a Triforce piece (Nelsonic 8321 instruction manual).
This is a compact action game designed around a limited LCD display and small controls. The Zelda Wiki characterizes it as loosely based on the original Zelda and notes the small play area; that is a secondary description, not a measured comparison with the NES screen (Zelda Wiki entry). The watch offers a distinct, simplified play experience rather than the exploration and full game world of the NES release.

Is the Zelda Game Watch the same as Nintendo’s Game & Watch?
No. The Nelsonic 8321 is a wristwatch with an LCD game. Nintendo’s later Game & Watch: The Legend of Zelda is a separate handheld product; Nintendo’s manual for that device describes three Zelda games and different controls (Nintendo Game & Watch: The Legend of Zelda manual). The shared Zelda name does not make the products the same device.
When was the Nelsonic Zelda watch released, and what versions are reported?
The Zelda Wiki reports a U.S. release date of October 5, 1989, and a U.K. release in May 1992. It also lists pink, black, white and red versions (Zelda Wiki entry). These are secondary-reference details, rather than dates and color variants confirmed here by corporate records.

What battery does the Nelsonic Zelda watch use?
The 8321 manual recommends “Silver Oxide 392 or Equ.” That is the historical specification printed for the model; it does not confirm the condition or compatibility of the battery in any particular used watch. Check the individual watch and its battery requirements before ordering a replacement (Nelsonic 8321 instruction manual).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should you check when buying a used 8321?
- Ask for clear photos of the watch, LCD, buttons, case back and band so you can compare the item with the model identification.
- Ask the seller to demonstrate both timekeeping and game mode; operation of one does not establish that the other works.
- Confirm the return terms, since a vintage unit’s actual condition cannot be inferred from the model’s original manual.
The manual’s printed high-score field shows 1820; it is simply a value on the page, not a sales or market statistic.
