When Windows reports that vldlg.dll is missing or could not be loaded, repair the affected AutoCAD-based installation instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing Windows files, confirm three details:

- Which program fails: AutoCAD, an AutoCAD-based vertical product, a Visual LISP application, or an Autodesk installer.
- When the error appears: during launch, while opening a DWG, when loading a LISP or VLX add-in, or during installation or updating.
- Which architecture is involved: a 32-bit Autodesk component needs the matching 32-bit file, even when Windows itself is 64-bit.
Also note the exact wording. You may see messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because vldlg.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “This application failed to start because vldlg.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading vldlg.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Failed to load vldlg.dll.”
The phrase “the specified module could not be found” does not always mean that vldlg.dll itself is absent. Windows may be reporting a dependency required by that DLL.

What vldlg.dll belongs to
vldlg.dll is identified as Visual LISP resource DLL, part of Visual LISP Support, developed by Autodesk Inc. Visual LISP is integrated into the Windows version of AutoCAD rather than being an independent Windows runtime.
That means vldlg.dll should normally be restored by the Autodesk product that uses it. It is not established as:
- A Windows system DLL
- A Microsoft Visual C++ runtime
- A DirectX component
- A .NET file
- A device driver
- A file that should be manually copied into
System32orSysWOW64
Different Autodesk releases and products can use different files, layouts, and architectures. Do not assume that a copy taken from another AutoCAD installation is compatible.
Fix 1: Repair the Autodesk installation
Repair is the safest first fix when the Autodesk product is still listed in Windows. It restores missing or damaged product files without requiring you to find individual DLLs.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Close AutoCAD and every other Autodesk application.
- Press
Windowsand type Control Panel. - Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs and then Programs and Features.
- Find the affected Autodesk product in the list.
- Right-click it and choose Uninstall/Change.
- In the Autodesk maintenance window, select Repair.
- Follow the prompts until the operation finishes.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the same Autodesk product that originally displayed the error.
If AutoCAD starts normally, the repair restored the required Visual LISP files. Test the workflow that previously failed, such as opening a DWG or loading the LISP or VLX application.
If Repair is unavailable
Newer Autodesk installation frameworks may not offer a Repair button. In that case:
- Open Settings with
Windows + I. - Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Locate the affected Autodesk product.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
- Reinstall the exact product and release from your Autodesk Account or the original Autodesk installer.
- Apply the product’s updates before testing it.
Do not install a different AutoCAD release merely because it is available. The file required by one release may not match another release.
Fix 2: Reinstall when repair does not work
Use Reinstall from the older Autodesk maintenance window when Repair completes but the error remains.
- Open Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features.
- Select the Autodesk product.
- Choose Uninstall/Change.
- Select Reinstall instead of Repair.
- Complete the process.
- Restart Windows.
- Open AutoCAD and repeat the action that caused the error.
Reinstalling replaces the product files from the installation package. It is more reliable than copying a single DLL because it also restores related resources, configuration entries, and dependencies.
Back up custom AutoLISP files, profiles, templates, scripts, and tool palettes before a full uninstall. A clean uninstall can remove settings and customizations. If several Autodesk products are installed, identify the affected product carefully before removing anything.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can block an installer or quarantine a product file. This is a plausible cause when vldlg.dll disappeared shortly after an Autodesk update, repair, or security scan.
To check Microsoft Defender:
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent actions involving the Autodesk installation folder or installer.
- Open an item to inspect its details.
- Restore the file only if you can verify that it belongs to a trusted Autodesk installation.
- Run Autodesk Repair or Reinstall afterward if the file was already damaged or removed.
Microsoft explains Protection History and restoration in its Windows Security Protection History documentation.
Do not disable antivirus protection permanently. If a verified Autodesk installer is repeatedly blocked, review the antivirus event details and use Autodesk’s installation guidance or your organization’s security policy before attempting another installation.
Fix 4: Install the correct Autodesk update
An incomplete update can leave a product with files from different releases. That can produce a missing-file message even when a file with the same name exists somewhere on the computer.
Use the update mechanism associated with the affected Autodesk product or download the update through your Autodesk Account. Install updates only for the same product and release.
After updating:
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the Autodesk product.
- Test Visual LISP or the drawing that triggered the error.
- If the error remains, run Repair.
- If Repair is unavailable or unsuccessful, perform a clean reinstall.
Never combine vldlg.dll files from different AutoCAD releases. A file can have the correct name but still be incompatible with the executable that loads it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFix 5: Check architecture and the actual application path
A 32-bit Autodesk component cannot always use a 64-bit replacement with the same filename. The reverse is also true. This matters on 64-bit Windows, where both 32-bit and 64-bit applications may be installed.
To identify the application architecture, check the product documentation, installer name, or the application’s installation details. Do not use the folder name alone as proof of compatibility.
Also check the location from which the application is being launched:
- Right-click the AutoCAD shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Review the Target field.
- Confirm that it points to the Autodesk installation you intend to repair.
- If you have multiple Autodesk releases installed, repeat this check for each shortcut.
Windows searches for DLLs according to defined loader rules. A copy beside an executable can take precedence over another copy elsewhere. Microsoft documents this behavior in its DLL search order documentation.

Do not copy a replacement into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. That can create version conflicts, affect other applications, and still leave the Autodesk installation incomplete.
Fix 6: Determine whether a dependency is missing
Windows may name vldlg.dll even when the missing item is a dependency loaded by it. This is especially possible when the message says that the specified module could not be found.
Look for more useful evidence in the Autodesk installation logs:
- Press
Windows + R. - Type
%TEMP%. - Press Enter.
- Sort the folder by Date modified.
- Look for logs created when the Autodesk product was installed, updated, repaired, or launched.
- Search relevant text files for
vldlg.dll, failed, missing, error, ormodule. - Record the exact dependency name if a log identifies one.
You can also check Event Viewer:
- Press
Windows + X. - Select Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Review events created at the time of the failure.
- Look for entries naming AutoCAD, the Visual LISP component, or a module-load failure.
If the log names a Microsoft runtime or another Autodesk component, repair that named component through its official installer. Do not install Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET simply because the failing file ends in .dll.

Fix 7: Run Windows integrity checks as a secondary test
vldlg.dll is not established as a Windows system file, so SFC and DISM are not the primary repair for this error. Use them when several applications show system-file problems, Windows components are malfunctioning, or Autodesk repair reports broader operating-system corruption.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test AutoCAD again.
Microsoft documents this DISM-then-SFC sequence in its System File Checker instructions.
The SFC result will tell you whether Windows repaired protected system files. It does not prove that the Autodesk copy of vldlg.dll was restored. If AutoCAD still reports the error, return to Autodesk Repair or Reinstall.
When manually repeating SFC and DISM only produces the same result, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for related Windows problems and show what it identifies; its free scan shows the findings, while repair is handled by the full version. Reinstalling the Autodesk product remains the definitive fix for a missing Autodesk file.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Fix 8: Investigate a broader driver or system problem
vldlg.dll is an application resource, not a device driver. Device Manager and driver updates are therefore not the normal solution. Use them only when the failure began with wider graphics, display, storage, or hardware problems.
To check for device errors:
- Press
Windows + X. - Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, Storage controllers, and any category showing a warning icon.
- Right-click a device.
- Select Properties.
- Read the status under the General tab.
- Review the Events tab for recent failures.
- Use Update driver only when the device itself is reporting a problem.
- Restart Windows and test AutoCAD.
Do not use Windows Features to add a random runtime for this DLL. Features such as .NET Framework are relevant only when the Autodesk installer or error explicitly identifies them.
If several hardware drivers are stale and checking each manufacturer’s version manually is taking time, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver updates; the scan shows what it finds, while installing drivers is handled by the full version. Updating a driver will not replace vldlg.dll or substitute for repairing Visual LISP Support.
Fix 9: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after an update, software installation, or system change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press
Windows + R. - Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Choose Next.
- Select a restore point created before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
You can also open Control Panel → Recovery → Open System Restore.
Microsoft states that System Restore changes system files, registry settings, and installed programs but normally does not remove personal files. It is not guaranteed to resolve an Autodesk installation problem, and it cannot help without a suitable restore point. See Microsoft’s System Restore guidance.
After the rollback, update or reinstall the Autodesk product if the restored installation is outdated or incomplete.
Why regsvr32 vldlg.dll is usually wrong
Do not run:
regsvr32 vldlg.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by COM and ActiveX components. It is not a general-purpose repair command for every DLL.
There is no public evidence that vldlg.dll is a COM server that requires registration. Running the command may produce an error such as “DllRegisterServer was not found,” and it will not restore a deleted file, correct an architecture mismatch, or repair an Autodesk installation.
Microsoft describes the command in its regsvr32 documentation.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Do not download an isolated vldlg.dll file from an unverified DLL site. A downloaded file may be:
- Modified or malicious
- From the wrong Autodesk release
- The wrong architecture
- Missing a required dependency
- Incompatible with the executable loading it
- Unsigned or impossible to verify against an official Autodesk package
Copying it into a Windows folder can also cause Windows to load the wrong copy. The safe sources are the Autodesk installer, Autodesk Account, the product’s supported update channel, or a trusted installation package supplied by your organization.

When to contact Autodesk support
Escalate the issue when all of these are true:
- Repair and reinstall were completed for the exact affected product.
- The error continues with a clean user launch.
- Antivirus logs show no unresolved block.
- Installation logs identify no clear dependency.
- The same failure occurs for a newly created Windows user profile.
- Multiple Autodesk products are affected.
- A third-party AutoLISP or VLX add-in may be involved.
Record the exact Autodesk product and release, Windows version, application architecture, error wording, installation log names, Protection History events, and Event Viewer entries. This information helps distinguish a missing Autodesk resource from a dependency or add-in failure.
FAQ
Is vldlg.dll a Windows file?
No reliable evidence establishes it as a Windows system DLL. It is identified as a Visual LISP resource belonging to Autodesk software.
Does Microsoft Visual C++ repair vldlg.dll?
Not normally. vldlg.dll is associated with Visual LISP Support, not identified as a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime. Install or repair another runtime only when the error or installation log names it.
Which Autodesk product installed it?
The file is associated with Visual LISP Support used by the Windows version of AutoCAD and potentially AutoCAD-based vertical products. The exact product and file location depend on the installed Autodesk release.
