pjlmon.dll is Microsoft’s PJL Language Monitor, a Windows print component used for Printer Job Language and bidirectional communication between the print spooler and compatible printers. The safest repair is normally to reinstall the affected printer and driver, then repair Windows components with DISM and SFC if Windows itself reports corruption.
Which fix applies to you
Use the symptom that best matches what you see:
- The error appears while adding, removing, or printing to one printer: remove that printer and install its current driver again.
- Print Spooler will not start, or several printers fail: repair Windows with DISM and SFC, then reset the spooler if needed.
- The problem started after a Windows or printer-driver update: install pending updates, reinstall the printer driver, or use System Restore if the timing is clear.
- Windows Security says it quarantined
pjlmon.dll: check Protection history and verify the file before restoring anything. - The message appears when launching an unrelated game or application: do not assume that application owns the DLL. Check its printer software, startup items, and dependencies first.
- The file exists but will not load: check its location, digital signature, driver architecture, and possible missing dependencies.
- You were considering a DLL download or
regsvr32: stop there. Neither is the normal repair method for a print monitor.
What is pjlmon.dll?
pjlmon.dll is described as the PJL Language Monitor and is part of the Microsoft Windows Operating System. PJL is a printer language used to send control information and query printer status.
Windows printing is handled by several layers. An application creates a print job, the driver converts it into printer-ready data, and the Print Spooler manages the queue. A language monitor can add printer-control information and support communication back from the printer, including status or configuration information.

Microsoft documents language monitors as user-mode DLLs used by the Windows printing architecture. The spooler loads a print-monitor DLL and initializes it through the print-monitor interface. That is different from the registration model used by ordinary ActiveX or COM DLLs.
A printer’s INF file can install and associate a language monitor with its driver. This is why a printer installation or driver update can expose a pjlmon.dll problem even when the visible error names a different application.
Microsoft’s public documentation does not provide a universal current Windows 10 or Windows 11 table of pjlmon.dll versions, sizes, hashes, or guaranteed file paths. Do not use an online version table as proof that a replacement file matches your installation.
Start with the printer and driver
This is the most likely fix when the message appears during printing, printer installation, Print Spooler startup, or after a printer update.

On Windows 11:
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected printer.
- Select Remove and confirm.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Let Windows search for the printer, or choose the option to add it manually.
- Complete the installation and print a test page.
On Windows 10:
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected printer.
- Select Remove device, then confirm.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Settings → Devices → Printers & scanners.
- Select Add a printer or scanner.
- Select the printer and complete setup.
If Windows offers a generic driver but the printer previously used a vendor-specific driver, download the current driver for the exact printer model and your Windows architecture from the printer manufacturer’s official support page. Do not install a driver for a similar model merely because its name is close.
The printer installation process should copy and associate the required monitor through its INF file. That is the correct way to restore the relationship between the driver, the spooler, and pjlmon.dll.
Install pending Windows updates
A servicing failure can leave a protected Windows component incomplete.
- Open Settings.
- On Windows 11, select Windows Update. On Windows 10, select Update & Security → Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Test the printer again.
If the error began immediately after a Windows update, note the update timing. Do not remove updates casually, but consider System Restore later if the failure persists and a suitable restore point exists.

Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through printer, chipset, and other hardware-driver versions; its free scan shows what it identifies, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and the printer manufacturer’s official driver remains the preferred source for a model-specific reinstall.
Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use this fix when pjlmon.dll is reported as missing from Windows, when multiple printers or spooler functions fail, or when reinstalling the printer does not help.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker. DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC scans protected system files and replaces damaged copies.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window because the percentage may pause for a while.
When DISM completes successfully, restart Windows.
Run SFC
After the restart:
- Open Command Prompt as administrator again.
- Enter:
sfc /scannow
- Press Enter.
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows again.
- Test printing and the application that showed the error.
A successful SFC result should indicate that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations, or that it found corrupt files and repaired them. If repaired files were found, the next restart is important because the corrected component may not be active until Windows reloads it.

If SFC cannot repair the files
If SFC says it found corrupt files but could not fix some of them:
- Run DISM again.
- Restart Windows.
- Run
sfc /scannowagain. - If the problem remains, review the SFC details in the Component-Based Servicing log or CBS log as Microsoft documents.
- Use a valid Windows repair source if Microsoft’s instructions call for one.
Do not replace individual system DLLs with files downloaded from an unknown source. A repair source must match the Windows installation closely enough for servicing to use it safely.
Check whether Windows Security quarantined the file
Antivirus software can quarantine a file after a detection or a false positive. Do not restore a quarantined DLL solely because its filename matches the error.

- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent actions involving
pjlmon.dllor the printer driver. - Expand the entry to see its location, detection name, and action.
- If the file is identified as a threat, leave it quarantined and run a full scan.
- If you believe it is a false positive, verify that it came from the Windows system installation or an official printer-driver package before considering Restore or Allow on device.
Microsoft warns that allowing an actual threat can expose the computer and personal data. If the file was found in a temporary folder, download directory, application folder, or another unexpected location, treat that copy as suspicious rather than restoring it.
After handling the detection, run a full scan and then run DISM and SFC. If other files are changing, unknown programs are launching, or Windows shows broader instability, investigate possible malware or disk corruption instead of focusing only on the DLL name.

Verify the file’s location and signature
A genuine system copy should be located where Windows placed its system components, but the exact current path can vary by Windows release and architecture. Avoid assuming that every valid copy belongs in C:WindowsSystem32, or that copying one into SysWOW64 will solve a 32-bit or 64-bit problem.
To inspect a copy:
- Press Windows + E to open File Explorer.
- Search the Windows installation drive for
pjlmon.dll. - Right-click the result and select Properties.
- Check the General tab for the full location.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab if it is available.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and that the signer is consistent with a Microsoft-supplied Windows component.
A signature alone is not enough if the file is in an unexpected directory. A copy beside a random executable, inside a temporary directory, or in a downloads folder deserves separate malware investigation.
You can also inspect the file from an elevated PowerShell window:
Get-AuthenticodeSignature "C:pathtopjlmon.dll"
Replace the path with the actual location. Do not treat an unsigned or unexpectedly located file as a safe replacement.
Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
The print spooler, driver, and language-monitor DLL must be compatible with the printer and Windows printing environment. A 32-bit application and 64-bit Windows do not automatically use interchangeable binaries.
To check Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Find System type.
On Windows 10, the path is Settings → System → About as well.
Use the driver supplied for the exact printer model and the architecture supported by your Windows installation. Do not copy an arbitrary pjlmon.dll into System32, SysWOW64, a game directory, or an application directory. That can create a second problem while leaving the printer INF configuration and spooler registration incomplete.
If only one older application reports the error, the application may be loading a dependency through a printer-related component. The phrase “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency of pjlmon.dll is missing, not necessarily that pjlmon.dll itself is absent.

Reset a stuck Print Spooler queue
A damaged queue or stale spooler state can prevent printer drivers and monitors from loading correctly. This reset deletes pending print jobs, so save any work that has not been printed.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Find Print Spooler.
- Right-click it and select Stop.
- Press Windows + R again.
- Enter:
%WINDIR%System32spoolPRINTERS
- Press Enter.
- Approve administrator access if prompted.
- Delete the files inside this folder, not the folder itself.
- Return to the Services window.
- Right-click Print Spooler.
- Select Start.
- Try printing again.
If the service stops immediately after starting, remove the affected printer and its driver package through the normal Windows printer workflow, then install a clean current driver. Do not delete monitor registry keys without a specific diagnosis and a backup, because incorrect registry changes can disable printing.

Some printers expose a setting that controls bidirectional support. Microsoft notes that changing this setting changes certain language-monitor calls, but it does not eliminate every interaction with the monitor.
Use it only as a diagnostic step:
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners on Windows 11, or Settings → Devices → Printers & scanners on Windows 10.
- Select the printer.
- Open Printer properties or Manage → Printer properties.
- Select the Ports tab.
- Look for Enable bidirectional support.
- Clear it temporarily and select Apply.
- Print a test page.
If behavior changes, the printer’s status communication or driver configuration is involved. This is not a permanent replacement for reinstalling the correct driver. Restore the setting if the printer requires bidirectional communication for status or special features.
Do not install unrelated runtime packages
pjlmon.dll is a Windows printing component. Microsoft does not identify Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET as the normal source of this file.
Installing those packages will not repair a damaged printer INF, restore a quarantined system component, or rebuild the spooler’s print-monitor configuration. Install them only when a particular application independently requires them and its official documentation identifies that requirement.
Likewise, regsvr32 pjlmon.dll is not the normal repair command. Print monitors are installed through printer INF files or the print-monitor installation mechanism, then loaded by the spooler. They are not repaired by treating the file as an ordinary COM registration DLL.
Use System Restore when the timing is clear
System Restore is appropriate when the failure began after a driver, update, or software change and a restore point from before that change exists.

- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the printer or Windows change.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the impact.
- Select Next → Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the restore.
System Restore does not normally remove personal documents, but it can roll back drivers, installed applications, and system settings. If no suitable restore point exists, continue with printer reinstallation and Windows repair rather than forcing an unrelated restore.
When a game or unrelated application shows the error
A program can display a generic loader message even when the underlying failure belongs to a printer component. First establish whether printing or the Print Spooler also fails.

- If printing fails too, repair the printer and Windows as described above.
- If only one application fails, update or reinstall that application from its official source.
- Check whether the application installs printer, PDF, label, or document-output software.
- Look for the file’s actual location instead of assuming the application directory is correct.
- Check Event Viewer for a matching application or spooler error if the failure is repeatable.
- Test from a new Windows user profile if the issue appears limited to one account.
Do not copy pjlmon.dll into the game or application folder. That can mask the visible message while leaving the actual printer-driver dependency broken.
Prevention after the repair
Once printing works again:
- Keep Windows updated and restart after servicing changes.
- Use the printer manufacturer’s official driver for the exact model.
- Remove obsolete printers and old driver packages instead of stacking several versions.
- Avoid registry cleaners and DLL download sites.
- Keep Windows Security active and review Protection history after a quarantine event.
- Create a restore point before major printer-driver changes.
- Record whether the printer uses a vendor-specific language monitor before replacing its driver.
- Do not delete system DLLs during disk cleanup.
FAQ
Is pjlmon.dll a legitimate Microsoft file?
Yes. pjlmon.dll is identified as Microsoft’s PJL Language Monitor and is part of the Windows operating system printing architecture. A file with that name in an unexpected folder is not automatically genuine, so verify its location and digital signature.
Is pjlmon.dll a Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET file?
