If a vMix playlist ends early, first determine what stopped: the current clip, the playlist sequence, or the YouTube broadcast. A playlist item with a short configured duration can advance early; a media file can report an incorrect duration; and a stopped or disconnected vMix stream can end the broadcast. Each has a different fix.
Identify what ends early
Watch what happens at the moment playback stops. Does vMix move to the next item, does the current file end while the sequence stays put, does the List stop advancing, or does YouTube Live itself end? That distinction prevents treating a playlist setting as a media-file fault—or a network disconnect as a playback problem.
- It advances to another input or item: inspect PlayList item timing or List controls.
- The current file ends early: compare its displayed duration with actual playback and check the applicable decoder or file-origin case.
- The YouTube broadcast ends or vMix reports a disconnect: check whether the stream was stopped and inspect the streaming log.
Check the vMix PlayList item timing
PlayList items have individual start positions, durations, transitions, and transition times. The item duration determines how long it runs before the playlist advances; a duration of zero means to use the input’s duration. vMix describes this setting as: “Duration: Set length of time this PlayList item will run before moving to the next item in the list.” (vMix PlayList documentation)
- Open the PlayList and select the item that appears to cut off early.
- Open that item’s settings and compare its configured start position and duration with the intended playback length. Check its transition and transition time too, since these govern the move to the next item.
- If you want the item to run for the input’s full duration, set its duration to zero. If a fixed duration is intentional, adjust it to the required length.
- Check whether the playlist is in Manual Mode. Confirm that its mode and the expected transition behavior match your intended sequence.
- Test the affected item again and observe whether the playlist advances at the expected point.
A playlist advancing at its configured duration does not, by itself, show that the media file is damaged.

Check a vMix List input
A List input has separate playback controls. Its Auto Next setting is enabled by default in the cited vMix guide; the input also has Loop and disabled-item skipping controls. For supported formats, it can show the total remaining time. (vMix List documentation)
- Select the List input and inspect whether Auto Next is enabled. Enable it if the list should advance automatically; disable it if you want to control advancement yourself.
- Check Loop if the list should repeat after its last item.
- Check whether the item that appears to be missing has been disabled. The List can skip disabled items.
- Where the media format supports it, compare the List’s displayed remaining time with what you observe during playback.
List playback controls are distinct from PlayList item durations. Check the feature actually sequencing your media rather than changing both sets of settings at once.

When a file reports or plays the wrong duration
Note the file type, the duration vMix displays, and whether the file also ends early when played outside the playlist. Use the decoder workaround that matches the reported issue; these are targeted options, not universal fixes.
MP3 shows an incorrect duration
- In vMix, open Settings > Decoders > FFMPEG.
- Add
*.mp3to the FFMPEG decoder list. - Restart vMix, then check the MP3 duration and playback again.
vMix documents this setting for MP3 files with incorrect duration. (vMix: Incorrect duration for MP3 files)

MP4 has a playback compatibility issue
For an MP4 compatibility problem, vMix documents adding *.mp4 to the FFMPEG decoder list under Settings > Decoders > FFMPEG, then restarting vMix. The cited instructions specify current software and 64-bit vMix. If this change does not help, reverse it rather than assuming that it fixes every short-playback case. (vMix: MP4 video file compatibility)
FFMPEG MOV or MP4 recording plays only the first few seconds elsewhere
A separate case applies when the file is an FFMPEG MOV or MP4 recording that shows only the first few seconds or looks incomplete in another program’s editing timeline. vMix attributes this behavior to its default fault-tolerant recording format. Use the included vMix Video Tools to index the file. For future recordings, choose MOV (Indexed) or MP4 (Indexed) at recording time. This remedy is for that recording and playback scenario, not a general fix for every vMix playlist ending early. (vMix: FFMPEG recording plays first few seconds in other programs)

If the YouTube Live stream ends or disconnects
If the clip or list stops but the broadcast remains live, continue with the playback checks above. If the YouTube broadcast itself ends, check whether the stream was finished in vMix: vMix says, “Once you finish the stream in vMix, it will also automatically end in YouTube.” (vMix: Streaming to YouTube Live Stream Now)
If vMix reports a disconnect or its streaming control changes state, inspect the latest log in C:ProgramDatavMixstreaming. vMix’s log guidance describes a real-time buffer becoming too full during slow startup or network congestion, as well as disconnection messages that may indicate a local internet outage, provider outage or closure, or security software. Read the specific error in the log rather than inferring a cause from the playlist symptom alone. (vMix: How to check the streaming logs)

Common symptoms and next checks
| What you observe | Likely area to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| PlayList switches inputs before the clip should end | That item’s configured timing or Manual Mode | Compare start position and duration with the intended run time; zero uses the input duration. |
| A List stops advancing or skips an item | Auto Next, Loop, or disabled-item skipping | Inspect the List controls and item status. |
| MP3 duration is shown incorrectly | Decoder handling | Add *.mp3 to the FFMPEG decoder list and restart. |
| MP4 compatibility problem | Decoder handling | On a supported 64-bit setup, try the documented *.mp4 FFMPEG decoder option and restart. |
| FFMPEG MOV/MP4 recording plays only the first few seconds in another program | Unindexed recording format | Index the file with vMix Video Tools; use an indexed format for future recordings. |
| YouTube Live ends when vMix stops streaming | Stream was finished in vMix | Check whether the stream was intentionally stopped in vMix. |
| vMix reports a stream disconnect | Connection, congestion, provider, or security software | Read the latest log in C:ProgramDatavMixstreaming for the error at the failure time. |
What to include when asking vMix support
If the checks do not resolve the problem, preserve the details that distinguish playback from streaming: your vMix version, media type and recording origin, duration displayed in vMix, whether the file ends early outside the sequence, the relevant PlayList or List settings, and the streaming log if YouTube disconnected. vMix provides a knowledge base, documentation, email support, forums, and training videos.
