vmprotectsdk32.dll is a 32-bit application DLL associated with VMProtect’s software-protection SDK. When vmprotectsdk32.dll is missing, the safest fix is usually to repair or reinstall the specific program that displays the error, not to download the DLL separately.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing Windows, write down:
- Which program or game shows the error
- Whether it appears at launch, during an update, or after an antivirus alert
- Whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit
- The exact message, such as “missing,” “not found,” “specified module could not be found,” or “not designed to run on Windows”
- Where the program was installed
- Whether
vmprotectsdk32.dllexists in that program’s folder
Do not assume the file belongs to Windows. VMProtect protects software from many unrelated vendors, so the filename alone does not identify the application that needs it.

What vmprotectsdk32.dll is
VMProtectSDK32.dll is the 32-bit user-mode implementation DLL from VMProtect’s SDK. It is intended to be used by a 32-bit application during development or in an application package that still expects the SDK library.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIt is not:
- A Windows system DLL
- A Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable file
- A DirectX component
- A .NET file
- A general-purpose DLL that should be copied into
C:WindowsSystem32 - A file that should normally be registered with
regsvr32
VMProtect also provides a separate 64-bit SDK DLL. A 32-bit process cannot load a 64-bit DLL, and a 64-bit process cannot load a 32-bit DLL. Windows 11 and Windows 10 can run 32-bit programs on 64-bit editions, which is why a PC with 64-bit Windows can legitimately need a file ending in 32.

Fix 1: Repair the application first
This is the fastest and most likely solution for a supported program.
Microsoft Store or packaged application
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the program that produces the error.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Start the program again.
If the error remains and the application supports it, return to the same screen and select Reset. Resetting can remove the application’s local data, so use it only when Repair fails and you understand what may be lost.
Traditional desktop application
- Press the Windows key.
- Type Control Panel and open it.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Find the affected application.
- Right-click it and choose Repair or Change.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
Not every desktop application provides a Repair option. If no repair option exists, continue with a clean reinstall.
Game launcher repair
If the error belongs to a game, open its official launcher and look for a command named Verify files, Verify integrity, Repair, or Scan and repair. Let the launcher replace damaged files, then restart Windows.
A successful repair should either start the program normally or produce a different, more specific error. If the same message returns, do not keep copying DLL files from the internet. Reinstall the application from its official installer or official launcher instead.
Fix 2: Reinstall the program from its official source
An incomplete installation, failed update, or damaged application folder is the most common explanation for a missing application DLL.
- Save any settings or projects the program stores locally.
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the affected program and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the program publisher or use its official launcher.
- Install the same application again.
- Launch it once using its normal shortcut.
For older software, use Control Panel > Programs and Features if it does not appear in Settings.
During reinstall, do not manually select a random DLL from another program. If the installer places vmprotectsdk32.dll beside the program executable, leave it there. Application DLLs normally belong in the application’s managed installation directory.
VMProtect documentation indicates that a properly protected production executable generally removes its SDK references. If a released program continues to demand the SDK DLL, the publisher may have packaged an incorrect build, shipped an incomplete update, or distributed a development or test executable. In that situation, contact the application vendor with the exact error and application version.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may have removed or isolated the DLL. Do not immediately restore it or disable protection.

- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Find the detection associated with the application.
- Expand it and record the detected file path and detection name.
- Confirm that the program came from its legitimate publisher.
- If the program is trusted, reinstall it from the official source before considering restoration.
If Windows Security repeatedly removes the file, submit the file or detection details to the application publisher or security vendor for analysis. Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined file can lead to another detection. Allow or restore it only when you have verified both the software and the file’s expected location.
If the program came from a crack, cheat, activator, unofficial mirror, or unknown archive, do not restore the DLL. Remove the program and run a full Windows Security scan.
Fix 4: Confirm the application architecture
The 32 suffix matters.
A 32-bit application needs the 32-bit SDK DLL. Installing a 64-bit DLL in its place cannot solve the problem. A 64-bit Windows installation can still run the affected 32-bit program, so the operating system’s bitness does not tell you which application package is correct.
To check a running program:
- Start the program if possible.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Details.
- Right-click a column heading and choose Select columns.
- Enable Platform if your Windows version provides it.
- Look for the application’s process and note whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit.
If the program will not start, check its publisher documentation or installer name. Do not mix files from separate x86 and x64 packages. Install the publisher’s complete build for the application architecture.
Fix 5: Understand “specified module could not be found”
This message does not always mean that vmprotectsdk32.dll itself is absent.
Windows normally searches the executable’s folder and other defined locations for DLLs. A DLL can also require additional dependencies. If vmprotectsdk32.dll is present beside the executable but Windows reports:
The specified module could not be found
then a dependency of the DLL or application may be missing.
Check the following:
- Open the application’s installation folder.
- Confirm whether the named DLL exists.
- Do not move it to System32 or SysWOW64.
- Run the application’s official Repair or Verify command.
- If the error persists, ask the publisher for a dependency diagnostic or use a reputable dependency-analysis utility.
A publisher should identify the missing dependency rather than asking you to download individual files from an unknown source.

Installing Visual C++ Redistributable is not a direct fix for a missing vmprotectsdk32.dll. It is relevant only if a later message specifically names a Microsoft runtime such as VCRUNTIME140.dll or MSVCP140.dll.

For a 32-bit application, use Microsoft’s official x86 Visual C++ Redistributable package. Install it from Microsoft, restart Windows, and test the application again.
Do not use a Microsoft runtime installation as a substitute for repairing the application that supplied vmprotectsdk32.dll.
Fix 7: Update drivers only when the evidence points there
A graphics, storage, or security-driver problem can cause an application to fail, but updating drivers will not normally recreate this third-party application DLL.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
To check for driver problems:
- Right-click Start.
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Storage controllers, or Network adapters.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties > Driver.
- Check the provider and date.
- Use Update Driver only when a newer driver is available from the device or PC manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test the affected program.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through many hardware vendors; its free scan shows which drivers need attention, while the full version performs the driver installation. Reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when that application owns vmprotectsdk32.dll.
Fix 8: Repair Windows components later
Because vmprotectsdk32.dll is not a protected Windows system file, DISM and SFC usually will not restore it. Use them when Windows itself is unstable, several unrelated programs fail, or the application repair exposed broader component corruption.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows after both commands finish.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows files. Neither command normally replaces a third-party DLL installed by an application.
Repeatedly running these commands without recording what changed makes diagnosis harder. Outbyte PC Repair can make the manual checking easier by showing what its free scan finds, while repair features require the full version; it is optional, and repairing the owning application remains the correct fix for this DLL.

Fix 9: Use System Restore only after a recent change
System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after an installation, update, or system change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Win + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore is not a replacement for reinstalling the affected application. It may remove recent programs or updates, so review the affected-program list first.

Downloading vmprotectsdk32.dll from a random DLL website is risky because the file may contain malware, be the wrong architecture, be incompatible with the application build, or simply leave the missing dependency untouched. It can also create version conflicts when copied into a system directory.
There is no verified official standalone end-user download that should be used as a universal fix. The safe source is the official installer or launcher for the program that needs the file.

regsvr32 VMProtectSDK32.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points, commonly COM or ActiveX components. VMProtect documents this file as an application SDK/runtime implementation DLL, not as an ActiveX control. The command may return an error such as DllRegisterServer was not found, and it will not repair a missing application installation.

If the program is unofficial or suspicious
A missing DLL does not prove that a program is malware. However, a crack, cheat, activator, pirated game, or unofficial utility deserves extra caution.
If that describes the affected software:
- Do not disable antivirus.
- Do not restore the DLL from quarantine.
- Uninstall the program.
- Run a Full scan in Windows Security.
- Change passwords if the program was run with sensitive accounts open.
- Obtain legitimate software from its publisher.
VMProtect branding alone does not establish that an executable is safe.

If the error says “not designed to run on Windows,” the file may be corrupt, the build may have the wrong bitness, or another dependency may be damaged. That message is not proof that the DLL is simply missing.
FAQ
Is vmprotectsdk32.dll part of Windows?
No. It is associated with VMProtect’s 32-bit application SDK and should normally be supplied by the application that needs it.
Which program installed it?
The filename cannot identify the program. VMProtect protects software from many vendors. Check the error window, shortcut target, installation folder, launcher, and recent application history.
Why does a 64-bit PC need a 32-bit DLL?
64-bit Windows can run 32-bit applications. A 32-bit process needs 32-bit libraries, including a 32-bit VMProtect SDK DLL.
Should I copy it into System32 or SysWOW64?
No. Keep application DLLs in the owning program’s managed folder. Manual system-directory placement can cause conflicts and DLL-loading security problems.
Will installing Visual C++ fix it?
Not directly. Install a Microsoft Visual C++ package only when the error specifically names a missing Microsoft runtime.
Can I run regsvr32 on it?
Normally no. This is not documented as a COM or ActiveX registration DLL, so registration is not the repair.
Is the file malware?
Not necessarily. The filename is a legitimate VMProtect SDK component, but an unofficial program using it may still be unsafe. Verify the application’s source and check antivirus history.
What is the definitive fix?
Identify the owning application, then use its official Repair, Verify, update, or reinstall process. If the program still requires the SDK DLL after a clean official installation, the application publisher must provide a corrected build or diagnosis.
