When python35.dll is missing, the safest fix is usually to repair or reinstall the application that is requesting it, not to download a loose DLL.
The file may belong to a standalone Python 3.5 installation, but it is also commonly bundled inside another application, game, launcher, engineering tool, or installer that embeds Python. The correct repair depends on which program owns the file.

Python 3.5 reached end of life on September 30, 2020. Its final release was Python 3.5.10. If an older application specifically requires python35.dll, installing current Python does not automatically satisfy that requirement because newer Python releases use different runtime filenames and application interfaces.

Reported file variants
The following version and size combinations are sometimes associated with this filename, but they are not universal specifications. Different Python distributions and third-party applications may ship different builds.
| Architecture | Reported version | Reported size |
|---|---|---|
| 32-bit | 3.5.150.1013 | 2.98 MB |
| 64-bit | 3.5.104.1013 | 3.61 MB |
Do not identify a replacement by size alone. The application’s installer must determine which build belongs there.
Match the error to the cause
The exact wording gives an early clue:
| Message | Likely meaning |
|---|---|
| “python35.dll is missing from your computer” | The expected file is absent from the application or Python installation |
| “python35.dll was not found” | The program could not locate the DLL in its expected search path |
| “Error loading Python DLL … error code 127” | A required entry point or dependency may be missing |
| “python35.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error” | The file may be corrupt, incompatible, or the wrong architecture |
| “The specified module could not be found” | The named DLL or one of its dependent DLLs may be missing |
| “WinError 193” | A 32-bit and 64-bit component may be mixed |
The error can appear after an application update, incomplete reinstall, antivirus quarantine, disk cleanup, damaged files, or a failed prerequisite installation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Step 1: Identify the program that owns the DLL
Before installing anything, find the application that produced the error.
Use the shortcut target
- Right-click the shortcut that fails.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, read the Target field.
- Note the executable name and the folder shown in Start in.
- Open that installation folder in File Explorer.
The folder containing the executable is often the correct repair target. Do not assume that the first program name shown in the error is Python itself. An application may embed Python without exposing it as a separate installation.
Check the installation directory
Look for the program’s main executable and folders named python, runtime, bin, or similar. If the application has its own python35.dll, repair that application rather than copying a file from another Python installation.
You can also right-click the executable, choose Properties, and check the Details tab. The product name may reveal which vendor’s installer should be used.
Determine 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
The DLL must match the process that loads it. A 64-bit process cannot load a 32-bit DLL, and a 32-bit process cannot load a 64-bit DLL.
Use these clues:
- A 32-bit application often installs under
C:Program Files (x86). - A 64-bit application often installs under
C:Program Files. - The application vendor’s system requirements may identify its architecture.
- Task Manager may show a 32-bit process with
(32 bit)beside its name on 64-bit Windows.
The architecture of Windows is not enough. A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows still needs the x86 version of its runtime and prerequisites.
Step 2: Repair the owning application
This is the most likely solution when a game, launcher, desktop application, or specialist tool reports the error.
Repair through Windows Settings
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the application named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the application on Windows 10.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If Repair is not available, use the application’s own launcher. Look for commands named Verify integrity, Verify files, Scan and repair, Repair installation, or Check for updates.
Recommended Free Tools
A successful repair normally restores the private DLL and allows the original program to start without changing Windows system folders.
Reinstall from the official vendor
If repair fails:
- Close the application and its launcher.
- Uninstall it from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the application developer or publisher.
- Install the same architecture required by the application.
- Start the program before restoring old configuration files or plugins.
If the program is distributed through a launcher, use that launcher’s uninstall and reinstall process. Reinstalling standalone Python will not repair an application that carries its own copy of python35.dll.
Run the installer as administrator only when necessary. Right-click the official installer, choose Show more options if needed, and select Run as administrator.

Step 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may remove or quarantine a bundled DLL after an update or scan.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an action involving
python35.dll. - Confirm that the detected file belongs to the expected application folder.
- Do not restore it merely because the filename matches.
- If the installation is trusted, use the application’s repair or reinstall process after handling the quarantine entry.
If the same file is repeatedly removed, stop restoring it blindly. Update the security product, scan the complete application folder, and investigate whether the installation has been modified. A replacement obtained through the original installer is safer than a loose DLL.
Step 4: Reinstall standalone Python only when Python owns the file
Install Python directly only if the failing program is your own Python 3.5 installation or explicitly requires a system Python 3.5 runtime.
Use the official Python 3.5.10 release page on Python.org and select the installer matching the application:
- Windows x86 executable installer for 32-bit use
- Windows x86-64 executable installer for 64-bit use
The embeddable zip packages are intended for applications that embed Python. They are not the normal choice for a regular desktop Python installation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAfter downloading the correct installer:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Remove the damaged Python 3.5 installation if it is listed.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the matching Python 3.5.10 installer.
- Use Customize installation if you need to control the destination.
- Install to the location expected by the application.
- Test the original program again.
Python 3.5 is retired and no longer receives security updates. Use a supported Python release instead when the dependent application explicitly supports it. Do not replace Python 3.5 with a newer release when the application requires the python35.dll interface.
Step 5: Repair the Microsoft runtime prerequisite
python35.dll is not a Visual C++ Redistributable DLL. Installing Visual C++ cannot substitute for a missing Python runtime. However, older Python 3.5 builds and applications that embed them may also require Microsoft runtime components.
Use the application vendor’s prerequisite instructions first. If they identify the Visual C++ 2015 Redistributable, obtain it from Microsoft and choose the architecture matching the application:
- Install x86 for a 32-bit application.
- Install x64 for a 64-bit application.
A 32-bit application commonly needs x86 even when Windows itself is 64-bit.
After installation:
- Restart Windows.
- Start the application again.
- If the message changes from “missing” to “procedure entry point” or “specified module could not be found,” the Python DLL may now be present but another dependency is still failing.
Do not install every Visual C++ package at random. The correct runtime depends on the application and the error.
Step 6: Repair Windows components
Windows repair commands are useful when several unrelated programs are failing or Windows components are damaged. They do not normally restore a private third-party python35.dll.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If both commands complete successfully but the application still reports python35.dll, return to the application repair or reinstall step.
Repeating SFC and DISM without checking what changed can make troubleshooting needlessly slow. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the component problems that are difficult to identify manually; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair is performed by the full version. Reinstalling the owning application remains the definitive fix when its private DLL is damaged.
If the failure began immediately after a system or software change, open Start, type rstrui.exe, and press Enter. Follow the System Restore wizard to select an appropriate restore point. System Restore can roll back system files, settings, and installed programs without normally affecting personal files.
Step 7: Update drivers only when evidence points there
Drivers are not the normal source of a missing python35.dll, so do not begin by updating every driver. Consider this step when the application also reports graphics, hardware, device, or installation failures.

To update a driver manually:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
Prefer the hardware manufacturer’s official driver when Windows cannot find a suitable update. Record the device name and driver version before changing anything.
Outbyte Driver Updater can show which installed drivers are stale instead of making you inspect many devices manually; its free scan identifies issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version. A driver update is not a substitute for repairing the application that owns python35.dll.
What not to do
Do not download a loose DLL
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, an altered file, the wrong architecture, or a build that does not match the application. Even a genuine copy may not fix the missing dependency that caused the error.
Use the application’s official installer, launcher repair function, or the official Python installer when Python itself owns the file.
Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64
Windows searches the application directory early in the normal DLL search order. An application expecting a private DLL beside its executable may ignore a copy placed in a Windows folder. The wrong copy can also create architecture conflicts, version conflicts, and DLL-preloading risks.
Do not run regsvr32 on python35.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. Python runtime DLLs are not normally registered this way. Running:

usually produces an entry-point error and does not repair the application.
If the error changes after repair
- “Procedure entry point could not be located”: the DLL may be the wrong build or incompatible with another bundled component. Reinstall the complete application.
WinError 193: check that the executable and Python DLL use the same x86 or x64 architecture.- “The specified module could not be found”: a dependency of
python35.dllmay be absent. Reinstall the vendor’s prerequisites and inspect application logs. - “Not designed to run on Windows”: suspect corruption, an incomplete installation, or the wrong architecture. Replace the complete installation rather than only the DLL.
For persistent failures, record the full executable path, application version, Windows version, application architecture, antivirus action, and exact new error. A dependency-analysis tool or the vendor’s installation logs can identify which module is actually missing. If repair still fails, contact the application developer with that information.
FAQ
Is python35.dll part of Windows?
No. It is a Python 3.5 runtime component normally supplied by Python or by an application that embeds Python.
Will installing Python 3.11 or another current version fix it?
Usually not. A program specifically requesting python35.dll expects the Python 3.5 runtime interface. Upgrade only when the application supports a newer Python version.

Should I install Python if a game reports this error?
Usually no. Repair or reinstall the game first. Many games and launchers bundle their own Python runtime.
Which version should I choose, x86 or x64?
Choose the architecture of the application that loads the DLL, not merely the architecture of Windows.
Can SFC restore python35.dll?
