Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →vmrdvcore.dll is a Microsoft Windows system DLL associated with Remote Desktop Virtualization and Hyper-V, not a Visual C++, DirectX, or ordinary game runtime file. If Windows says it is missing, cannot load it, or is not designed to run on Windows, repair the protected Windows component rather than downloading a replacement.
The normal public location is C:WindowsSystem32vmrdvcore.dll. The file’s internal description is “VmRdvCore EndPoints,” and Microsoft file records show both x86 and x64 variants in Windows 8, Windows Server 2012, Windows 8.1, and Windows Server 2012 R2. Microsoft’s Remote Desktop Virtualization Host documentation explains the virtualization area it belongs to.

What the vmrdvcore.dll error means
You may see wording such as:
- “The program can’t start because vmrdvcore.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because vmrdvcore.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting vmrdvcore.dll.”
- “Error loading vmrdvcore.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “vmrdvcore.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These messages do not always mean the named file itself is absent. “The specified module could not be found” can also indicate that a dependency required by vmrdvcore.dll is missing, damaged, blocked, or the wrong architecture.
The problem commonly follows a failed Windows update, upgrade or rollback, interrupted servicing operation, disk corruption, malware cleanup, antivirus quarantine, disk cleanup, or changes to Hyper-V or Remote Desktop Virtualization. Start with Windows repair in the order below.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Time needed: 10–30 minutes, depending on pending updates
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Open Windows Update. On some Windows 10 installations, open Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install everything offered, including updates requiring a restart.
- Restart Windows even if the update screen does not insist on it.
- Try the program or Windows feature that produced the error again.
Pending servicing work can leave protected files in an incomplete state. If Windows Update reports an error, restart once more and then continue with DISM and SFC.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
This is the primary repair for a missing or damaged vmrdvcore.dll.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Enter this command and press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the failing program or feature.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces incorrect copies. Microsoft documents both procedures in its guides for repairing a Windows image and using the SFC command.
If SFC reports that it could not repair everything, restart and run it once more. If DISM cannot obtain repair files from Windows Update, use a matching Windows installation source instead:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:\serverc$Windows /LimitAccess
The source must closely match the installed Windows edition and build. An unrelated installation source can introduce another mismatch. See Microsoft’s guidance on repair-source behavior and Windows Update corruption.
Repeating DISM and SFC without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan showing what it identifies, while repair is performed by the full version; it is optional, and Windows’ built-in DISM and SFC remain the appropriate first repair for this Microsoft component.

If the commands complete successfully but the error remains, continue with the file and role checks below.
Fix 3: Check the file’s path, architecture, and signature
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
- Open File Explorer.
- Enter this path in the address bar:
C:WindowsSystem32
- Look for
vmrdvcore.dll. - Right-click it, select Properties, and inspect the Details tab.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab if it is present. The signer should identify Microsoft Corporation.
- Select Signature Details and confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.
Do not treat a version number copied from another Windows installation as a universal target. Documented records include 6.2.9200.20866, 6.3.9600.16384, 6.3.9600.18064, and a Windows 10-era 64-bit record of 10.0.19041.1, but the correct version depends on the Windows build, edition, servicing state, and architecture. Microsoft’s Windows file lists and Windows 8.1 and Server 2012 R2 file records show why versions should be matched to the operating system.

On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 supports 32-bit compatibility files. The folder names are confusing, so do not infer the architecture from the name alone. A 32-bit copy is not a substitute for a 64-bit system component, and an older Windows 8 copy should not be placed into Windows 10 or Windows 11.
If the file exists but appears corrupt, run:
sfc /scanfile=C:WindowsSystem32vmrdvcore.dll
Restart after the scan. If the signature is invalid, the file is in an unexpected directory, or SFC cannot repair it, use DISM and SFC rather than copying a replacement manually.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFix 4: Check Hyper-V and Remote Desktop Virtualization features
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
This step matters most on a Hyper-V host, Remote Desktop Virtualization host, or a computer where the error began after enabling or disabling virtualization features.
- Open Start and type Windows Features.
- Select Turn Windows features on or off.
- Review Hyper-V, including Hyper-V Platform and Hyper-V Management Tools, if your Windows edition supports them.
- Review any Remote Desktop virtualization or related server role configuration appropriate to the machine.
- If a feature is required but unchecked, select it and choose OK.
- Allow Windows to apply the changes.
- Restart the computer.
- Test the affected host or application.
On Windows Server, open Server Manager > Manage > Add Roles and Features and verify the relevant Hyper-V and Remote Desktop Virtualization roles. Apply current updates before testing.
Do not install Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, or .NET merely because an error names a DLL. Those packages are not documented as the source of vmrdvcore.dll, which is a Windows virtualization component.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine and run a scan
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
Security software may quarantine a legitimate protected file after a detection or cleanup operation.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Open Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
vmrdvcore.dll. - Check the original path and detection details.
- Do not restore the file if it came from an unexpected folder or the detection remains uncertain.
- Run a full scan.
- If the file was quarantined from
C:WindowsSystem32and its Microsoft signature is valid, follow your security product’s documented restore process. - Run DISM and SFC afterward, then restart.
When the quarantine history is unclear, Windows component repair is safer than restoring an arbitrary copy.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent system change
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
Use this when the error began immediately after an update, driver change, feature change, rollback, or repair attempt.

- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Next, review the affected programs, and choose Finish.
- Let Windows restart and complete the restoration.
- Test the original operation.
System Restore rolls back system files, settings, drivers, and installed programs, but it does not remove personal files. If no suitable restore point exists, continue with offline repair or an in-place repair installation.
Fix 7: Repair Windows offline or in place
Time needed: 30 minutes to several hours
If Windows will not start normally, open Windows Recovery Environment and use the correct Windows drive letter. It may not be C: there. The following example uses D::
SFC /scannow /offbootdir=D: /offwindir=D:Windows
DISM /Image:D: /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Replace D: with the volume that contains the Windows folder. Microsoft documents this approach in its WinRE startup repair procedure.
For a system that still starts but remains damaged after DISM, SFC, updates, and System Restore, consider an in-place Windows repair using official installation media that matches the installed edition and architecture. Back up important files first and choose the option that preserves personal files and applications when available.
Do not download or register vmrdvcore.dll manually
There is no verified Microsoft standalone vmrdvcore.dll download intended for users. Random DLL download sites pages can provide malware, the wrong Windows version, the wrong architecture, or a file that does not repair the missing dependency.
Do not copy the DLL into an application folder or replace the copy in System32. Manual replacement can create signature, servicing, version, and architecture mismatches. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, matching installation media, or an official Windows repair path instead.
regsvr32 is also not a generic DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that expose COM registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer; there is no evidence that vmrdvcore.dll should be registered this way. Microsoft explains the command’s purpose in its regsvr32 documentation.
If the error remains
Check the full error text and Event Viewer, especially events recorded when the failure occurs. A dependency failure may name vmrdvcore.dll even when another component is absent.

Then:
- Confirm the Windows edition and build with
winver. - Confirm whether the file is present in
System32. - Check its Microsoft digital signature.
- Run DISM and SFC again only after addressing any Windows Update failure.
- Review
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.logfor repair failures. - On a managed server, contact the administrator before changing Hyper-V or Remote Desktop roles.
- If corruption persists, use System Restore, WinRE repair, or an in-place repair installation.
For a third-party program, use its official repair or verify-files feature only if that program actually owns the missing file. For vmrdvcore.dll, Windows repair remains the primary path.
Common causes and the appropriate fix
| Likely cause | Best response |
|---|---|
| Missing or corrupted protected Windows component | DISM, then SFC, then restart |
| Incomplete Windows update | Install updates, complete restarts, then repair with DISM and SFC |
| Wrong architecture or copied version | Remove the manual replacement and repair Windows |
| Antivirus quarantine | Check quarantine, verify the Microsoft signature, scan, then repair |
| Disk or filesystem corruption | Back up data, check drive health, repair Windows, and consider recovery media |
| Hyper-V or Remote Desktop role change | Verify features and roles, patch the host, and restart |
| Recent rollback or system change | Use System Restore |
| Missing dependency | Inspect the complete error and Event Viewer rather than replacing only the named DLL |

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteShould I put vmrdvcore.dll in a game folder?
No. The normal public location is under C:WindowsSystem32, and manually placing a copy beside a program can create an incompatible or unsafe installation.
Is the file part of Visual C++ or DirectX?
No documented evidence identifies it as either runtime. Repair Windows instead of installing unrelated redistributables.
Why does Windows say the file exists but cannot be found?
The named file may be corrupt, blocked, the wrong architecture, or dependent on another missing DLL. Check the signature, run SFC, and inspect the complete error and event logs.
Does regsvr32 fix this error?
Not normally. regsvr32 is for DLLs designed for COM self-registration, not a general-purpose repair command for protected Windows components.
What if DISM and SFC cannot fix it?
Check Windows Update errors and CBS.log, try System Restore, use offline repair from WinRE if necessary, and consider an in-place repair installation with matching Windows media.
